I came for the Haring Bathrooms and found even more than I expected, this is a small treasure trove of queer NYC art that is fascinating and meaningful. They have a lot of services as well, it's not just an artspace, I learned a lot about what they do by reading the brochures. They have a nice cafe space in the first floor, the design is nice and inviting and nobody even asked what I was doing as I wandered aimlessly through every hall taking pictures. Enjoy! Located in what was once the Food and Maritime Trades High School (which presumably trained chefs to sail the high seas, or sailors how to cook), the center serves as home to more than three hundred groups - from A Danish, A Dame, A Date (for single lesbians aged 40+) to the Zappalorti Society (psychiatric survivors seeking peer support) - that meet here on a regular basis. Under one roof you'll find counseling and social services, cultural and recreational activities, twelve-step groups, volunteer programs, a library, museum, and cyber center. They also sponsor lectures, game nights, holiday parties, book discussions, potluck dinners, dances, and the like. The NYC LGBT Community Center is literally the center of the world for all Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender folks and our "Straight-But-Not-Narrow" allies. In some ways living here and being queer we don't realize how lucky we are to have this great resource. It has play groups for our kids + support groups for their mommies + daddies too; after-school + summer-school programs for tweens + teens; meet and greet programs for 20-somethings; groups for every conceivable interest from chess to square dancing; groups for seniors + their caretakers; the list goes on and on. If you EVER doubt how lucky we are to have it AND how central it is to all our lives just try to help out a straight friend with some sort of crisis. We can ALWAYS "just call the Center" and someone, somewhere will direct us to the right services. But str8 people? They have to navigate all of NYC's bureaucracy alone with no help or guidance. It's a very nice updated space. Although I hadn't been here before, per friends, this used to be quite old and grungy. Now it's shiny and new! When you walk into the lobby, there is a display that has the various events and specific locations so that is very helpful. It seems like a great resource for the community. read more

The Library has the largest collection of LGBT titles in NYC. You can even browse their collection online: http://166.84.144.29/wx/s.exe The Center offers rooms and space for rent for groups and events enriching the LGBT community, including social groups, cultural events, panel discussions and recovery (12 step) groups. My partner introduced me to the Center couple of years back and we've both become regular patrons of their services. When sheand I first moved to NYC, the Center was there as a wonderful, supportive environment. She got involved with a number of groups as a volunteer, advertised her services in the Center's bulletin board and made some good friends through the place. For those that need an education about how all-gender bathrooms work for everyone. Label both rooms as all-gender and put 3 stalls in 1 and stalls and perhaps a urinal in the other. People gravitate to the one that makes them most comfortable. To use... Select a stall or urinal that is Not yet occupied and least "unhealthy" to your own standards. Then you enter and you pee or poop where you are most comfortable. The sinks and mirrors are ideal for hand washing, hygiene, make-up and of course selfies. Being cordial in the restroom assures mutual respect. Say hi or nothing at all but be polite and everyone should be able to do their private business just fine. This place is OK. I go here for meetings every now and then. The book store upstairs is cute too and the coffee shop is nice. It's usually packed in the coffee area, so I often take my coffee to sit on the other side where the receptionists are. All of the receptionists are nice. But the only ones I know by name is Roy. That's because he introduced himself to me the first day I came in with questions because I was visibly anxious and didn't feel comfortable being in this space. I wasn't out yet when I first entered. I was scared and just stood in the corner looking at the people walking in and out. He asked me if I needed help and I whimpered. I didn't know what I needed. He gave me a sheet of paper with information and talked me through all that is offered. He told me I can have a seat to sit down and if I have questions to ask. I felt welcomed. There are others who now smile at me and say hello as well as I am now a regular I would like to believe. A kind face goes a long way. I think you did an exceptional job hiring the staff you have here because it can be very scary for newcomers especially because everyone seems to cliqued up. I now have a community and it is all thanks to your staff at the reception desk. If I would have never gotten a greeting I would have turned around and never came back. I love the fact that there is a place like this in the city. I have met a few new friends here..attending certain group events. The events that I attended is lgbt 20's somethings, bisexual support groups...This place made me feel like I am not alone. So the LGBT Community Center is a very resourceful community structure for all Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender folks and our "open minded/hetero" allies. The center is a must know for all LBGT of the tri state, because whether transgenders are at thier begining stages and they may need help, or have questions, or whether there is an issue of discrimination some gay kids may not know thier rights or that there are people that will help them get justice. Its very big inside with a bunch of different rooms for rent for rehearsal, or classes or seminars. Ive participated in all types of events here. If you need rehearsal or meeting space this is somewhere to denifinitely consider. As you walk in at the front desk kiosk, lined by condoms and brochures with knowledgeable staff behind it. Theyve held dances, balls, and galas. I persinally have taken some of thier photo, production, language and dance classes.They also have held wrestling classes and jiu jitsu practices. I took those too! It's quite wonderful this place exists. The center is greatly helpful in many ways and for a number of reasons. Its not only a place where you can go and be yourself, its a place where you can get support, pick up a trade or skill, make new friends, and become a better you. read more

I work nearby so I come in to do some work at the Think Cafe. I do not know much about the Center, but it always has a welcoming atmosphere that makes me feel comfortable. The coffee is great, and the staff is always a pleasure. It has reliable wifi and lots of space to work. I much prefer it to some crowded Starbucks. read more

Came by to get information about the wellness center. I come in and see three young women sitting at the front desk and as I approached them, I said if they could help me locate someone in the building who works there and was flat out told, "No" with a smile. Okay. Then, I call the person who I spoke with at the center to get directions and was received with sarcasm and rudeness over the phone. I asked her where was she located in the building so we could meet to talk about the various support groups, I was told she didn't feel comfortable sharing that information with someone over the phone. Okay... She directed me to the wellness center and obtain more information from there. Mind you, I have never been to this center before and this is how they direct people. So, we have three stooges sitting at the receptionist area getting paid to sit on their asses and not do anything and we have people in the mental health facility treating people seeking mental health like shit...Great place! read more

This Center is an empowerment place for The entire LGBT Community. It has many different programs ranging from Youth services to Senior Services. The building has a huge rainbow flag in the front and the inside has four levels. The building is very wheel chair accessible, their is a elevator. Ironically, The Center has no real "community" and is a bastion of bias. In all the years I have come here, I have witnessed or experienced so much bias and prejudice between people who identify differently from each other. The Center is HEAVILY male dominated to begin with. I have heard hating from men towards women here, also from women towards men, and from numerous people towards bisexuals, trans-people and every other orientation. I guess it all comes down from the top. I experienced numerous verbal bias attacks and gender slurs in one group at The Center that pretends to be all-inclusive but is basically a male club (including attacks/slurs from the Organizers) and I finally reported this to The Executive Office. Absurdly, a woman who works somewhere at The Center is the only person who called me in response to my request for assistance, and proceeded to show no concern about the attacks and slurs, and she dismissed everything I told her had happened, and explained that she is friends with one of the group's organizers (a male of course) and therefore she wouldn't take any complaints seriously. (Even complaints to the Executive Office are met with bias! Amazing.) This woman who called me "informed me" that The Center takes no interest or responsibility for anything that happens in groups there. Seriously? I'm quite sure they have at least legal responsibilities for what goes on there, not to mention obvious ethical responsibilities--which apparently they ignore. At the very least, one would think bias and hating against gender or orientation would not be tolerated. Unbelievable. The hypocrisy and absurdity of this supposed LGBTQ "community" center. I have been going to the Center for 10 years now, ever since I realized I was gay. It used to have a down at the heel look but the revamping changed all that. I like the new cafe though I miss the snack machines. I also enjoy the new bookstore on the 2nd floor. But the Center other than the bookstore and great arts programs, is more for an older crowd, like 60 and over, or for teens. They have no age specific programs for those of us in our 30s and 40s and they don't have dances or speeddating events which I miss. I heard they raised the price of the rooms too high for people to rent now to run dating events, etc. I also find it annoying that I must go to the 2nd floor for a woman's bathroom. Though I appreciate a mixed gender bathroom for the trans community, I once had a bad experience in one when a crazy homeless dude wandered in. The center tends to attract some nuts due to its open door policy and lack of visible security, though they do have security behind the scenes. read more

The Center will always hold a squishy place in my chocolate center. It was the place where I got my first job out of college and the people I met there were key in helping me through the emotion of coming out to my parents. This place is essential for any lgbt person or people who want to support them. They have great programs for gay and questioning youth, terrific mental health programs, and there are bazillions of support groups and fun events. The Center really is the center and is essential in the history of the NY gay community. Many crucial organizations have gotten their start from meeting here: Unity Fellowship Church, ACT-UP, Queer Nation, the LGBT Anti-Violence Project, the Lesbian Avengers and onward. As much I as love the Center, I tend to think of it as a jumping off place before you move on and discover other parts of the New York lgbt universe. It's like a place for the general overview. i love this place, cuz everyone is so friendly! i came to this place when i was so down at the lowest point of my life. and somehow thru meeting friends and talking in groups and therapy i pulled myself together and found the courage to get up once again, so if any lgbt people or supporters ever needs to talk about anything at all that is getting u down, i suggest take some time and go visit this place. chances are ull feel alot better and more hopeful when leaving this place. read more
