The word Cenotaph means empty tomb. It is a monument to honor a person whose body is elsewhere.
The Sydney Cenotaph is located at the entrance to the Fullerton Hotel which used to be the General Post Office (GPO). Its location in Martin Place is significant because that is where many soldiers enlisted in World War I.
The empty tomb is guarded by a soldier and a sailor. The soldier statue was based on Corporal William Pigott Darby. Leading Seaman John William Varcoe served as the model for the sailor.
A nice tribute to those who bravely served their country.
