    Vet examining a cute cat

This is the best vet in nyc. They only deal with cats!! If you love your cat, you'll bring them here!

Cute, sweet feline touches all over the office...you can tell they truly love and appreciate cats here.

Finding Dr. Dougherty and his team at The Cat Practice has been a godsend. We have two seven-year-old cats who are our absolute world and have unfortunately each experienced quite a few health concerns in recent years. The Cat Practice has been a tremendous breath of feline-focused fresh air in a world of veterinary offices with intimidating, barking-dog-packed waiting rooms and doctors who clearly didn't have specialized expertise in diagnosing and caring for cats like they do at The Cat Practice. We found them online and figured it was worth a shot to take a drive in to the city (we live in NJ and had visited a number of more local vets, none of whom had been able to really make a difference for us) and are SO GLAD that we did! We will be clients for life. I would seriously look in to flying back to see them if we ever had to move out of the surrounding area. Dr. Dougherty is incredibly knowledgeable, thorough, compassionate, and SO gentle. He always takes the time to fully explain everything that he's doing and thinking, and he has such a calming presence on both cats and nervous cat-parents alike. You can really feel how much he truly adores cats and is personally invested in making sure they are all as healthy and happy as possible. His Tech Dylan is also fantastic and so kind...Dylan didn't even flinch when, during one visit, our tabby Toast got a little scared and took a swipe at him, literally leaving a claw shard dangling from his cheek. He kept carefully holding her until Dr. D finished up, and then he was actually comforting US before leaving the room to clean himself up. Toast suffers from allergies and an autoimmune issue which cause her to be very itchy and to dramatically over-groom, and Dr. Dougherty has been the only one to be able to figure out exactly what was going on and finally get things under control for her. His amazing partner Arielle has spent hours helping us navigate different pharmacy/medication options, and Toast is now doing the best that she has in years, with fluffy fur covering her previously bare patches and a dramatically improved quality of life! We could not be more thankful to see Toast so happy and comfortable again. Recently, our tuxedo cat Monkey started limping and not being able to jump out of nowhere, and Dr. Dougherty got us in right away and was able to identify what was wrong IMMEDIATELY. It turned out that Monkey had torn her ACL (extremely unusual in cats, so not something many Vets would have known) but he was able to feel and accurately diagnose our very agitated, hurting girl within minutes and got us referred to/seen by an excellent surgeon at Blue Pearl within days. We are seriously always amazed by what a cat-whisperer Dr. D is - his expertise is so specialized and so impressive. The Cat Practice's prices are very reasonable, and they never suggest any procedures/treatments that are not absolutely 100% necessary (which is something I have not found to be true with previous vets). Even with treatments that are very important, they will walk you through what order things should be done if money is tight, and help you to understand all of your options. The office itself feels more like a warm, cozy home than it does a medical facility, and your cat is free to explore the exam room prior to the appointment rather than being confined to the carrier which seems to lower anxiety levels. We trust Dr. Dougherty, Arielle, Dylan, and the whole Cat Practice team without question, and we will continue to drive into NYC to see them from NJ for as long as they'll let us! (By the way, we always find convenient street parking right outside of the office too, which is a great added bonus for those driving in.) Oh, they also offer boarding, which we've not done yet but if we were to ever need to board Toast and Monkey, The Cat Practice is the ONLY place we would ever trust!

Would just add that Dr. Dougherty and his wife were absolute life-savers as we prepared to move our two cats from New York to Hawai'i. The necessary paperwork is very complicated but they took care of all of it - and were incredibly patient and accommodating throughout the process. If you are looking for medical help for your cat, we cannot recommend Dr. Dougherty highly enough.

They are attentive, gentle, and thorough. My kitty is losing muscle mass and I'm afraid what that means.

I'm very disappointed by Kitty in NY (the "agency" ), specifically their caregiver, Jody R., for…read morethe lack of accountability, negligence of care and poor communication. I would not recommend Jody or this service to anyone. For context, I was overseas visiting my family over the holidays and just picked up my Maine Coon. My cat's fur absolutely reeked of smoke. He's a long haired cat and upon return, was also severely matted. Two months prior, I had met Jody for an initial, in-person meet and greet to manage communication and care expectations for cat boarding. Detailed care and communication parameters were established in the onset, baked into the contract, signed by all parties so everyone was on the same page. There were no "mismatch" of communication or care expectations. Fast forward to today, not once was it disclosed that someone in her household smoked. I also gave Jody very specific care instructions, that my long haired cat had to be brushed everyday. Ultimately my cat came back in a state of severe discomfort from the pulling of the matting on his skin. Jody also did not provide clean, filtered water on a daily basis. I had to follow up with her multiple times, before she finally disclosed her filter wasn't working for days. To anyone reading this, how are these actions not negligent by the caregiver? Would you consider this a safe and risk-free environment when your cat comes home reeking of smoke? Isn't this / borderline animal abuse? It was also baked into our contract that Jody was suppose to provide daily updates, considering I was going to be overseas for 19 days. When I would ask her about how my cat is doing, she would basically tell me to "shut up" and stop sending her texts. Isn't she getting paid / part of her responsibility as a cat sitter to provide daily updates? I've also addressed these issues directly with John W. at the agency. John chalked it up with the "we are sorry" and doesn't do anything about it. I pressed him further on my concerns for my cat's wellbeing, so John finally offered to find a new caregiver. I made the ultimate decision to not move my cat to a new caregiver due to 1. how stressful it is for cats to acclimatize to another new environment and 2. the agency's track record doesn't give me any confidence to go through the whole vetting process again on providing a new, actually responsible caregiver. What if they're another Jody? and 3. I will take matters into my own hands and come back early to rescue my cat from negligence. All of my friends / family were also out of town over the holidays, so I couldn't ask them to look after my cat. All I wanted was to make sure my cat was in a safe and stable environment. This was not a "personal choice." In fact, I would be an irresponsible pet parent if I did nothing/ did not fly back early to rescue my cat from a negligent caregiver. End of the day, if Jody was actually a responsible caregiver, there would be no reason for me to return early. Kitty in NY failed to mention below that in the onset, they did not offer any reimbursements. I had to draw the boundary, walk them through the math / rationale before they finally agreed to submit the correct remittance. Reimbursement was certainly not a voluntary option offered by them as they made it seem. There were no detailed background checks done on Jody either, as the agency stated they would on their caregivers. For instance, Jody is currently not a social worker as outlined in the agency's profile of her. She's a full time dog walker. This was a red flag for me in the beginning so I asked John for referrals on Jody. He could only summon one referral, who gave one positive review on Jody. Where are the other proofs / reviews of Jody's "years of excellent service" and "positive client feedback" as the agency claims? If she is so good at her job, what does the agency have to hide? For anyone who engages Kitty in NY in the future, please beware that if you take the gamble and land yourself with someone negligent, I've given you a preview of what will happen and the agency's lack of accountability and transparency. Whoever lands Jody for future dog walking or cat sitting service, you have been warned to stay away. Who knows how she treats your pets behind closed doors....

The veterinarian found the cause of wound to be inconclusive but did confirm it seemed to be (recently) environmental and not self-inflicted (as our dog could not personally reach that area on her body). They did not rule out another dog attacking ours but said that was most likely not the cause. The fact is that we dropped our healthy, clean dog off in good condition and she left with a serious, visible wound as the pictures show - this was not there prior to the drop off and it's quite frankly insane and offensive that was up for debate by Paws of Chelsea. I'm giving two stars as the staff was professional and communicative in handling this issue, on the way to the veterinarian. However, there was zero accountability on their part and we were met with excuses and blame. Paws of Chelsea did give us one free night of boarding which was appreciated but was not nearly as much as we had to spend on an extremely expensive vet bill and the discomfort our dog suffered. Based on reading other reviews and how the owner chooses to respond, I do not suggest this place for boarding. If someone is choosing to board, I HIGHLY suggest doing a full examination with pictures, before dropping off your dog and signing their waiver.
