Hats off to The Captain's Cap. Nice salad bar comes with your meal. I ordered the small catfish meal with onion rings and was only able to eat half of it. The portion sizes are quiet large. I read a lot of people like the tartar sauce but it's not favorite. It's definitely unique. The onion rings were fantastic. Some of the best I've had. Last evening I ordered a take out order. When I arrived the line to pick up the orders was backed up into the street. 31 minutes later I finally got to the window but some how my order called in 50 minutes before had gotten lost, so I had to wait another 15 minutes to finally get my food. Of course it was cold when I got home. I have dined here for the last time. Attitude of employees was horrible. My money is best spent elsewhere. Don't order takeout from the Captains Cap in Gastonia. If you don't get rear ended on the highway waiting to get in, your food will be cold after waiting an hour in the parking lot for you food. read more

Once again, great food and service! My mom and I shared an order of grilled chicken with grilled vegetables! My 93 year old mom ate every bit of her chicken, and she's very picky! She likes the vegetables but would like to see bell peppers added. I like this meal because it's Keto-friendly. I just skip the carrots and hush puppies, well most of the hush puppies!The person who took my order over the phone remembered my dad and recognized my voice and his were not the same. And I can't fail to mention the sweet red-haired young lady who runs the pick-up window who didn't even ask me my name when I pulled up to the window! Finally made my way to the Captain's Cap. This Gastonia/King's Mountain staple is still going after 40 years! You simply can't beat the price- it's is extremely affordable with every menu item under $20 and it always includes a large serving of fish, your choice of potato, and a visit to the salad bar. I ordered the broiled fish option and it was seasoned well and he had the fried flounder. The restaurant is large and when I looked around the average age was about 78 years old. They have a section on the menu for a seniors discount which probably explains this. Either way, our presence lowered the average age by about 10 years. Haha. Takeout from here was a staple of my childhood. So of course, whenever I come home for a visit, we have at least one but takeout order per visit. It's a pretty standard NC Fish Camp menu. The food was amazing! The service however wasn't there. We saw the tables around us getting great service, they all got hush puppies while having their salads and we never did. We had to ask whoever (not our server) brought our food out to get us some. I remember going here as a kid and it being so amazing, this experience wasn't what it used to be and it made me sad. Portions huge. Unbelievably inexpensive. The meal started with unlimited hush puppies which were a nice snack. I would have had fewer if I had known what was yet to come. A nice simple salad bar, well-stocked, was next. A few at our large table ordered broiled scallops. I have never seen so many in a portion; it seemed a shame that most had leftovers as these are not really suitable to take home and reheat. I had a fried seafood special: shrimp, cod, and crab cake. They have squeeze bottles of tarter sauce and cocktail sauce on each table so you don't have to ask. Somewhat disappointed / surprised by the crab cake as it's crabmeat stuffed back in a soft shell. Have visited several times and have never had a problem. He loves their catfish and will make three meals out of it. Good batter/fish ratio. I have hamburger steak, we'll done. It doesn't come burnt so that's a huge plus from me. And the onion rings ... wooooow. Handmade and oh so good. I could eat a meal of those alone!! Our servers are always friendly but not nosy. Honestly the service is like third grader capability. Carry out is like checking a third grader and eat-in is not much better the waitresses talk too much rather than serving the patrons. This used to be a decent place but the owners are totally out to lunch as far as managing this restaurant. A much better restaurant is Surf and Turf a few miles away in Bessemer City. If you have hemorrhoids, be warned: the benches are wooden and HARD. My food was not hot. Barely lukewarm. No way to eat a fry. Salad bar is okay if you're in desperate need of roughage. The only greens are iceberg lettuce, pickles, and jalepenos. Thank God I just happened to be up at 3 a.m. because that's when the stomach cramps started. I love this place and the service was impeccable. The food we ordered was served hot and fresh and in spite of the crowd of people the food came fairly quickly. We were still trying to eat from the fresh salad bar that is really good even though I wish they could get newer salad plates. The salad dressings is the best their hush puppies and coleslaw too as well as their ice tea and who don't love good ice tea. I visit this place often and haven't been disappointed yet. The takeout here is carless and will give you french fries instead of the baked potato you ordered. French fries are greasy and over cooked. Inside dining is a joke with very rude waitresses and the owner Steve cares absolutely nothing for his customers. I met and talked with him in person. He promised to replace two bad take out meals and then when arrived to dine in to make sure what I got was good, he said only one meal would be replaced. My husband and are are still social distancing. We are getting a few carry out dinners. This restaurant has been my MIL's go to for fish for years. I have never been crazy about it. It is a NC Fish Camp style. That means there is a serve yourself saladbar. Each meal comes with slaw. In ths case minced cabbage, no visable carrots, pickles, or purple cabbage. It is almost a liquid. A potato, and unlimited hushpuppis. When you eat inside as opposed to carry out you also get a salad. Pre covid 19 it was a self serve bar. We got carry out. 2 orders of fried flounder filet, one fried oysters and one salt and pepper green shimp. That is fish camp talk for peeled fried shrimp highly seasoned with black pepper and salt. These servings are loaded with fries and hush puppies. The bottom of the carry out box was filled with hush puppies on half and french fries on the other. This was covered with a sheet of pop up aluminum. Kiss of death for the fries and hpuppies. It threw the steam right back down on the starches making them soggy. The green shrimp and oysters were good. The fried flounder was suspect. I cook flounder at home at least once a week. These filets looked nothing like what we get at the market. Our wild caught flounder is a beautiful tender milky white delicate fish. When cooked, sometimes it is so tender the filets are fragile. These filets were chewy and had red streaks. It also had a very strong fishy smell and taste. We are sure it was not fresh, and strongly suspect it was NOT flounder. In the past when one orders a baked potato it was gummy and wrapped in foil. The baked sweet potato was bitter after steaming in a warmer and wrapped in foil. This was one of those quanity over quality meals. I will never get carry out from here again. When we are able to enjoy dining in, we would consider it, just because the MIL loves it and we know what to avoid. read more

My daughter and grand daughter have eaten there for the last time and for the following reasons: Fact #1...I ordered my meal and it was served. Fact #2..My daughter ordered her meal and was served. Fact #3..My grand daughter had been sick for the day and was not hungry. She did not order anything but a glass of water. Fact #4..My grand daughter ate a bite of her mom's salad and the waitress came over and charged my bill $5.95 for a salad. Fact #5..I was going to pay for my order which I did. Fact #6..I was going to pay for my daughter's which I did. Fact #7..I told owner, manager, or whoever what happened and he said because she got a extra plate and water and ate some of the complimentary hush puppies that he had to charge her for the salad. Fact #7...He could have refused to give a comp glass of water, a comp extra plate and I did not order his comp hush puppies....he did that....not me. Fact #8..He illegally charged me $5.95 for something that I did not receive. Fact #9...He complained how hard it was for him making it in the business. Maybe he should raise the prices and quit treating customers like they are criminals. I drove 30 miles just to eat there and he had no appreciation for our business. Customers are always right sure isn't his philosophy. I am 73 years old and eat out all the time but I have never been treated like a criminal before in my life and I have eaten out thousands of time. read more
