They did our wedding cake and absolutely nailed it! The staff were so friendly from the moment we walked in. We showed them pictures of what we liked and they did a fantastic job. It was also a very complex design that required a lot of intricate piping work. The cake itself was delicious, and the frosting was high quality, as well. Usually we either bake a cake ourselves or go pick up a giant cookie, but wanted this occasion to be a bit more special. Got an absolutely gorgeous cake shaped like a birthday present. Cake was chocolate chip with a chocolate ganache filling and a colorful fondant covering. Our daughter loved it and the girls at her party did as well. Very tasty and worth the price. One small shortfall was that we were told to pick it up on a specific day after 3 pm and before 4pm, but when we arrived at the designated time, the cake was not finished and had to wait an additional 30 minutes. read more

Unless you are a very creative person and can translate this to them on what exactly to do, this may not be the place for you. This place was recommended to me by a friend who has ordered cakes from them for years. I gladly took the recommendation, contacted them about needing a cake for graduation... and I was upfront that I had no idea what I wanted. They suggested Pinterest for ideas and said I could look through their book for ideas when stopping in. A few days later, I stopped into the store with a few ideas that I typed up. Admittedly, it was not detailed, but explained that my son was graduating and moving away to play baseball in Arizona. I gave them the school info and the logo for the baseball program and asked them to do their thing. Paid $100 for a sheet cake. When I went to pick up the cake the day before the graduation, I was in shock. What I picked up was a cake that looked as if they rushed through it cuz they were busy. There was nothing creative, fun, or exciting about it. They didn't even take the time to center anything! The writing was piped on and the edible print outs they used were wrinkled and just like everything else, off center... I seriously could have done this cake myself. I left with the cake and then before I even reached home, I pulled over and called them. They were nice enough to let me bring it back and they said they would work on doing better. When we got back to the store with the cake, we dealt with two people. One person who was trying to make things right and another who was obviously offended that we didn't like her off-kilter work (I found out later this was the owner). I seriously thought this irate individual was going to come over the counter at us at one point. She was adamant that we need to tell them exactly what we want and that we need to tell them to be creative. I calmly explained that I had given the leeway to be creative and had told them this is not my area of expertise. In fact... SPECIALIST is in THEIR name... shouldn't they be the ones to come up with something amazing???? They scraped off the frosting of the fiasco they gave me and did somewhat better, but it was still nothing special. I get that it's a sheet cake, so there's only so much you can do, but I went to several grad parties with sheet cakes that had cool effects on them, air brushed designs, cool lettering, etc. Hy-Vee or Sam's probably would have done better... for less! And I love Hy-Vee cakes! The upside... Everyone loved the taste of the cake. It did taste good. Not the best cake I ever had, but it's up there. I worked with Jayme (owner) at Cake Specialists for our wedding cake. Jayme does all wedding cakes, which I think is cool. You get consistency and experience! She was SUPER easy to work with, I loved it! During our cake tasting, the staff were very friendly, attentive, and helpful (unlike our experience at Cake Gallery). They have a very nice range of flavors to choose from, and their pricing is VERY reasonable! We showed her a picture of the cake we wanted and told her about the one thing we wanted to tweak. She was very knowledgable and creative! She told me the way I was thinking to tweak that detail wouldn't look as nice in practice, and then gave me two new alternatives (that were very creative!) that would be very pretty and would fit what I was imagining. She even searched the internet to find a picture of what she was describing so that we could make an informed decision! The cake was absolutely beautiful, and we loved it. We never got to taste our cake on our wedding day, but the guests raved about how it tasted. The Groom's cake was a cutout of the Iowa Hawkeye, and was perfectly done!! The only thing that wasn't absolutely perfect was the fondant pearls on the cake could have been a little bit more consistent/uniform in size...but in a wedding, this is too minor to care about! We first started to go to Cake Specialists for cakes about three or four years ago when we tasted one of their cakes at my daughter's friend's birthday parties. The taste of the cake was so delicious and the decorations on the cake was absolutely beautiful! So, we decided then, to give them a try. For my daughter's third birthday party, we were having a country themed birthday party, so I wanted to do a 3D horse cake. Could they do that? Yes, they could. It was huge too! We had a full sheet of the 3D horse, and with all that work, it was only $98.00! Their cakes always taste good and are always beautiful. This year, we went there to get my daughter's birthday cake after a bad experience somewhere else. When we called, I asked myself why I even wanted to go somewhere else?!? She was so friendly and helpful on the phone! We ended up going in to show her exactly what we wanted for our cake. The minute we walked in the door, we were greeted by a smiling and friendly face! What a great thing to see walking in to a business! We ordered a half sheet with an edible image and it cost $45.99! Not too bad considering the size of the cake, the edible image they need to create, and the awesome customer service! The Cake Specialist gave us the perfect cake for our wedding! I asked for a very simple 3 tiered cake with buttermilk frosting, with the intent that my florist would just decorate with flowers. It was perfect. They showed up on time, my cake topper looked great, and it tasted amazing. We went with their pink champagne flavor-seriously the best cake I've ever tasted. We also got a sheet cake of chocolate, which was also amazing. Instead of a groom cake, my husband and I decided to get a cake for my nephew, as his birthday was the day before our wedding. He came with us to the tasting and said he wanted a red cake. The Cake Specialist made the cutest little red velvet cake for him with a big Spider-Man face on top. Ordered a cake from here based on the Yelp reviews. Family all flying in for a big Creighton graduation in 05/2016. First one to graduate from college so this was a big one. Lots of family came in from out of state and we wanted to throw a great party. Catered the event and wanted a standout cake. Talked to Cake Specialist on the phone explained CU graduation and that my son was going to go into the service after graduation. Ordered cake three full weeks before graduation. I told her that from their website the cakes looked very creative and unique. She said she would make a cake to represent the graduation but also "drape, kind of wrap it around" the cake in the US Flag and add the Marine Emblem. I said my son would love that. When I arrived to pick up my cake weeks later they were "swamped" they told me with last minute orders and had been working all night. My cake was a simple white two tier with cut out blue and red stars stuck to it. It had a cheap CU graduation logo and a cheap stick on Marine logo. It looked terrible and cost me $100. I would have done better at Costco for less than half the price. Very disappointed. My family laughed at it when I brought it in. I had previously bragged to them about the amazing cake I had ordered for the event....haha! This is not my last CU graduation and I will go elsewhere for the next cake for sure. The owner is always willing to try different things when you requests them, we tend to shy away from traditional birthday cakes and ask for different designs. One time I brought in a picture of a lady bug , and asked if we could do that, she nailed it, just so cute. Another time brought in pictures of my favorite flowers, and the cake was absolutely stunning, the detail she did was so nice, and so different.
