They prefer you make an appointment, mostly so they have a table big enough for all of your goodies (should you choose to have the proper afternoon tea, which includes lots of different items). We arrived on Friday for our reservation at 1 pm and there were two or three other groups there. The place is charming, with that homemade feel. They offer several options for afternoon tea, ranging from about £5 for a cake/scone and tea, to around £15 for the finger foods and lunch options. I opted for the former and had a scone with grapes (they were out of plain scones) and lemon ginger tea. My wife had the same scone with chamomile. We were both very impressed with the quality of the food and the lovely service we were given. They have more than just tea. They make proper cakes and serve breakfast and lunch, as well as offer unique specials. This is place is a must try!

We wanted to create a homely environment where each and every customer is treated as a friend, therefore our menu is a mixture of meat, veggie, and vegan dishes and cakes! We are dog friendly, and allow well behaved dogs into the premises on a lead to enjoy a nice cold water or specially brewed doggy iced tea! Isabel A rightly mentions the duck pond right outside the tearoom door. There is quite the menagerie of other feathered friends roaming freely here with the dozen or so peacocks naturally being the stars of the show! The old farmhouse which houses the tearoom is inscribed '1741' and the whole operation has an authentic traditional feel to it. On my only visit here so far, I had a fruit scone and butter with my friend enjoying a plum crumble with custard and a pot of tea - all quality stuff, sizeable portions and a very nice price of £5.65. Looking at the cake display and also the daily specials board, I would estimate The Hay Loft to have substantial culinary firepower. I was pleasantly surprised to note the numerous vegetarian options, with daily specials including broccoli & Stilton soup, roast vegetable lasagna and a vegetable curry. Price wise, for proper food cooked on the premises, I would think this place is practically unbeatable. Also, another vote from our party for the friendly service received here. I would definitely go out my way to come back here, and I would recommend this a great choice for food and refreshment after a walk in Formby Beach or Nature Reserve or seeing the animals/tractor riding at Farmer Ted's (kids!) For the summer, Cheshire Farms ice cream is available here, definitely one of the northwest's top premium ice creams. Lydiate Farm Shoppe is on the other side of the farmyard - I will review it separately. In conclusion, of Lancashire farm eateries, there maybe some which are larger or more posh - but it wouldn't be surprise me if The Hayloft outpointed even full-blown farm restaurants on an overall score of food, hospitality and comfort.

Mothers Day Surprise!…read more We wanted to take the Mothers somewhere nice and out of town and had seen The Garden Kitchen had been visited by a number of our friends and family on Facebook, all giving great reviews and I can see why! We arrived for final service at 6pm and as you can imagine it was very busy on Mothers Day. The maître d' came straight over to us to let us know how long it would be until we were seated and continuously gave us progress updates. Whilst waiting we perused the small shop of local produce, had a drink and soaked up our surroundings. The Tea Room is a new addition to Holden Clough Nursery being built in the last few years, but looks like it should have always been there! It is beautiful and sympathetically designed to its surroundings. So, the food....WOW! I'd seen pictures but when our Afternoon Tea arrived on a mini picnic bench I felt like clapping!! (In fact, I think I did!!) Such a great idea and adds a little bit of originality and quirkiness to your experience. Everything on my picnic bench was delicious. The Mushroom soup was silky, creamy and full of flavour. The mini Roast Beef Dinner served in an individual yorkshire pudding was beautiful and of course came with a little jug of gravy and beef was tender and pink. The scone was fresh and light with jam that had just the right sweetness and fruit mix. My other main highlight was the Rocky Road, I'm not usually a fan because its too rich and sweet but O-M-G this was amazing. I still find myself thinking about it now two days on. The chocolate melts in your mouth to find small nuggets of biscuit and mini marshmallows.....all washed down with a great cup of coffee. John & Kate who own and run The Garden Kitchen have done a fanstastic job transforming Holden Clough Nursery over the last few years. The service, quality of food and surroundings are 10/10. We will be coming back during the day to visit the nursery (and no doubt the Garden Kitchen too). Thank you for a fantastic evening...and the Mums loved it!! : )

I went with my mum, sister and partner for the Valentine's afternoon tea, it was great it was so different from traditional afternoon tea you got soup in a tea cup, two open top sandwiches and a mini quiche which was a nice change from just sandwiches. The cakes you got was a scone. A mini red velvet cake, a heart biscuit, marshmallows with chocolate, profiterole with white chocolate and a mini love potion in a glass boot. We got a glass of pink proseco it was £19.99 each which is a little expensive for the place as its a tree nursery but they do a different theme for different seasons so it's well worth a visit. I would defiantly go

The second thing is the cheerful decor, with string lights dotted around the staircase and windows and plenty of quirky lived-in comfortable chairs, Mediterranean colour schemes and some lovely, slightly girly art on the walls. Then, considering just how nice it is to be there, how well you're being treated and how tasty and superbly fresh the food is, there's the price. That's a very nice little surprise. And little it is indeed. With soups at £2.95 you really, genuinely can't go wrong, especially when they're as delicious as this. And are you shocked that a good portion of the mains are under a fiver too? This place has a rustic café feel, with club and ciabatta sandwiches, fish cakes, chips, and plenty for the kids with omelettes and chicken. It's family-run and they have a knack for tending to kids, plus everything you see is pretty much made by one guy and one guy only. And no corners are cut; nothing's scrimped on. Everything from the pasta in the lasagne to the chips on the side are made fresh from scratch. Little twists in classic dishes really make a difference and the desserts are to die for, with the bread and butter pudding made with brioche, plump sultanas, cream and eggs a particular favourite. Plus if you're seeking strong coffee this is definitely the place to come, it's excellent.
