Down a picturesque country lane, the Hayloft is rare and exotic find, a real jewel in the crown of the fine Lydiate parish.
We fell upon said Hayloft by accident. What a triumph of good luck! We couldn't be more happy to be lukewarmly received by the farmer's wife herself, dressed in 1790s clothing and sporting an A board with the day's specials enscribed in beautiful calligraphy on the front and rear.
"Roll up, roll up!" she cried, warmly, as we pulled in to the car park in our well-worn wellies and tweed country gear. She couldn't be more welcoming, and we couldn't believe that we had been the only customers that day!
After a short 20-minute discussion with the landlady, we were finally allowed to enter the building, ensuring that we wiped our muddy boots first and removed our overcoats. We were then treated to a plethora of culinary delights, from the humble cheese scone to the chef's speciality, Meat Custard Surprise. The were some real avant guard items on their finger buffet, which would have raised the eyebrows of Heston Bloomentall himself! However, unpeturbed by the unusual colours and strange smells, we soldiered on and managed to finish our starters, entrees, hors d'oevres, conumees, main courses, desserts and after-dinner cheeses.
A highly recommendable meal, which was a real steal at £2.03 + VAT. read more
