Great experience! Great food and service! The gentleman that served us was so enjoyable to talk with and there are lots of interesting German, as well as other, memorabilia. read more

Even in the Black Forest, the black forest cake can't hold a candle to The Cabbage Roll's version. Go on a Friday night for the buffet. Once you go, you will go again and again! Lunches are great but the buffet is awesome! Deserts are included along with your drinks. (Sorry, no liquor here, but you don't need it to appreciate the food.) Tell your friends, tell your family. Go and go back. You will love it. read more

We stopped here on Friday November 8 on our way through St. Joseph. Easy to find and the food was great. My wife had a Polish Sausage sandwich and onion soup and I had a bratwurst sandwich and German fried potatoes. Split a piece of pie. Staff was very attentive and personable. Will stop here again. read more

We had the buffet on a Friday evening... Everything was awesome! Absolutely loved the atmosphere, food and service!

Off the beaten path but well worth the effort to get there. Friday night buffet is delicious & includes a variety of German food, dessert bar, salad and 8 flavors coffee. Plus the price is reasonable. The owner is personable & very welcoming. BUT Friday night reservations are a must because the restaurant is small and stays very busy. read more

The owner was very kind and friendly. The service was very prompt. It's not often that you go to a restaurant and are treated so warmly. That being said, there is nothing that would tempt me to ever visit there again. I can't think of a time when I have had poorer quality food. The plate I had was a sampling of a few different items off the menu. The polish sausage tasted like a mediocre hot dog, the German dumpling tasted like it was full of instant mashed potatoes, the bread was cold wheat "wonder bread", the German fried potatoes were burned and the butter was actually margarine. I paid about $12 for a very ill prepared meal. The cabbage roll was the only item worth eating. The raving reviews makes me wonder if it was an off day, I know the owners were getting ready to leave for vacation but I don't see how that should change the quality of the good so greatly. I wish the quality of food matched the price and quality of service. read more

It is a unique place. The food was just ok. I guess with the reviews I expected more. Hubby didn't get near enough to eat.

I loved it! The food was homemade German-European and very good. The staff was friendly and showed us the other rooms so we could see the German memorabilia. I had a plate with a cabbage roll, pierogi and Polish sausage with red cabbage and hot German potato salad on the side. I enjoyed it all. The bread was very tasty, as well. My husband had three cabbage rolls. He was in heaven. read more

Do not believe any of the reviews for this place below 4 or 5 stars - the only two places I know in the upper Midwest that are on par with this restaurant are Gerta's German Restaurant and Bakery in Omaha and Von Trier's in Milwaukee. The food here is amazing and as German as it gets. Dishes are made like my mom and grandma (a German - first generation in US) made them. Is it as good as moms? Close...very, very close. Yummy red cabbage, German potato salad, fried German potatoes, 5-bean salad...and those are just the sides! Main dishes like cabbage rolls, schnitzel and wurst, and even with some American fair like burgers...you just cannot ask for a better selection and for better quality from a local restaurant. Even the deserts are to die for. The folks there are as authentic as their food is. Are there any negatives? Only open one night per week, mainly a lunch place, limited seating...but like most places of this type, worth the effort to find and wait for a table. read more

Well, if you like Eastern European food you'll like this. There was some German food but not very much. The majority was all Eastern European food. read more

Visited today and had the combination plate which is a sausage, cabbage roll and pierogi, you also get two sides. The cabbage roll was ok, not alot of spice to it, same with the sausage - just your average sausage. The pierogi was not good, the outside was rubbery and it was barely warm. We could hear them microwaving stuff in the kitchen area and I suspect the pierogi was nuked from frozen. The cabbage side dish is very tasty and you get plenty of it. The fried potatoes were slightly sweet which is different, but I liked them. Husband's bread had a long black hair on it, not surprising with the number of people milling around the kitchen with long hair and no nets. The owner (I presume)/our waiter was very personable and attentive. read more

If you're craving Sauerkraut, this is the place to go! I don't think there's another place in town that has hot german potato salad and cabbage rolls. I got the cabbage rolls (two wasn't enough!) and my boyfriend got the sausage plate. It was quick and pretty tasty! Portions weren't very big for the price, but this is coming from someone who eats way too much anyway... You won't find german food anywhere else around, so it's well worth it if you have a craving. They also have a large selection of homemade desserts! We liked the homey atmosphere and the owners were crazy nice. We'll definitely be back. read more

In town for business, my boss and I stopped in for lunch! The staff is very friendly and the food is amazing! Very enjoyable atmosphere! Will definitely go back! read more

One of the Best Kept Secrets in Town. Its always a Treat for me to Dine here. Choose from their Regular Menu featuring Authentic German dishes, the Daily $5.99 Lunch Specials, or their Impressive German Buffet on Friday Nights. The Restaurant is off the beaten path in town, but definitely worth the trip to Find and Enjoy. I give it my highest recommendation. Andy and Larry will go out of their way to make your visit a delight. read more

This eatery is FANTASTIC!!! Is the best place to eat in St. Joe or anywhere for that matter. Everything is always fresh and personally prepared for the customer even on buffet weekends and nights. Love it! Love IT! And, Larry and Andy are the perfect hosts and make you feel like family. read more

Close to heaven!!! Between the Black Forest Cake and hot German potato salad, it's difficult to make decisions on what to order and where to stop. The only problem is their limited hours and availability. Wish they were open all day every day. read more

Local Family Restaurant where staff was very friendly and buffet food (cabbage rolls, fish, pork, meat loaf, lentil soup, German Potato Salad, etc., etc) was well prepared in house. Lots of desserts from very sweet peanut butter pie to great cobblers that were sweet enough but not overly so. There's nothing corporate about this restaurant. We were seated right away when we arrived with reservations but the Buffet DOES require reservations on Friday nights 5-7... but a phone call will do.As soon as you arrive with reservations you will be seated. (My In-laws had gone there once without the reservations and they could not have dinner the night they went.) Nothing corporate about this family restaurant. Best? cabbage rolls and fish. You can have as muchor little as you want at the buffet. 5 people ate for $65 - plus tip. We skipped the coffee because all they had was flavored and sweetened. It would have been nice to have some unsweetened coffee at the end of our meal. Go there if you can. You won't be sorry. Originally there August 2014; Back six weeks later read more

My husband and I ate our Valentine's Day lunch at The Cabbage Roll today. We had decided to try it out due to the positive comments from this site. I chose the variety plate and my husband tried the sausage, peppers, onions & more dinner. We both chose the sides of sweet and sour red cabbage and German fried potatoes. The red cabbage was excellent and both of our favorite. The fried potatoes were browned nicely and quite flavorful. We would highly recommend this place for a quality, authentic German dining experience at a reasonable price. If you are looking for an elegant dining experience, I would suggest you pass. But if you are comfortable in a quaint setting of German relics and family pictures for decor, this is your place! The co-owner, Ray, was quite friendly and patient in explaining their meal choices. Next time we want to try their Friday evening buffet (which requires reservations). The buffet menu changes monthly. Looking forward to a return to this place in the future. read more

If you like German food, you have got to go to The Cabbage Roll. We have been going there for years. The food is genuine German with the owners still having relatives in Germany so many of their dishes are handed down directly from their German mother and her relatives in Germany. Rouladen is made only on certain Fridays but is well worth the time and trouble to find out when it is being served. I believe it is on the 1st Friday of any month that has 5 Fridays in it. The deserts are outstanding, the atmosphere is awesome (where else can you sit in front of a mural of a true German castle - Neuschwanstein). There are photos and pictures everywhere. Andy and Larry are accommodating and entertaining hosts making everyone feel welcome and you leave feeling like family or at least close friends. Not the easiest place to find if you don't know St. Joseph, but well worth the effort. Their lunches are very affordable with specials as well as menus and the Friday night buffets are not to be missed. The buffet includes drinks (no liquor) and deserts which are phenomenal. A really must see and taste when in St. Joseph, MO read more

This place is great! Love the atmosphere and the staff. My friend took me out for a girls night and I can not stop thinking about how I can change my crazy schedule around so I can go again. Simply amazing. read more

Wonderful experience! The cabbage rolls were the best. Family owned and operated using mother and grandmother's recipes. Very quaint and very friendly. We passed up the wonderful looking desserts--will not make that mistake again! Don't pass this restaurant by--you'll be missing a real treat. read more

the veal parmesan here was fabulous I absolutely love the hot German potato salad! I found the service to be warm and friendly and the prices to be even more friendly. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a warm meal on any afternoon to fill your stomach for lunch or for dinner for business or simply by yourself! A true hidden gem!! read more

I enjoy good German food and was really looking forward to dining here, unfortunately, it was disappointing. The food was mediocre, too bad.

A little treasure. Amazing homestyle German food. Friendly, and great hometown atmosphere. This is now our favorite place for lunch when visiting St. Joe. Can't say enough about the warm friendly guys there, or the wonderful food. Can't get any better than this! We liked it so much we booked the "back room" for a group for a future buffet, and a couple vanloads of people from the KC area. read more

Based on the excellent reviews, I was excited to try the cabbage roll for lunch. Unfortunately, I was sorely disappointed. My husband and I ordered the pierogi dinner and the pork tenderloin sandwich. The pierogis came with three small pierogis covered in grilled onions and what appeared and tasted like bacon bits. I had expected homemade pierogis, but instead they tasted just like Mrs T's frozen pierogis. We got the german potato salad and German potatoes as sides. Neither was anything to write home about. In fact, I'd prefer my dad's homemade German potato salad to the lukewarm slightly burnt salad served at the Cabbage Roll. The pork sandwich was ok, but small. To top it all off, as we were eating, an employee took the trash out through the dining room. A restaurant should never take trash through the same room their customers are eating in! In the end we over paid for a poor meal that we could have made better ourselves at home and left hungry, due to the small servings. read more
