I was salivating with anticipation to try this restaurant as my husband read on reddit (I know 1st wrong move) that this place had authentic German Cuisine. Having served 7 years overseas in the military, I was VERY excited so we drove over an hour to try !! Arrived and seated ourselves, which later found out was not appropriate. The staff was nice. Decor looked like a souvenir shop and was draped with flags and memorabilia. The dessert case looked tasty, we did not partake. Our party of 4 each ordered Jagerschnitzel, which had a red wine sauce, something that is not customary in Germany (usually has a mushroom cream sauce) . The wine was NOT cooked out. The breading was not crispy as the sauce made it mushy. My side of German fried potatos was plain fried potatos, not seasoned but well cooked)- in Germany, you would have bacon and onions added it had none. The warm potato salad tasted fine, more like it came out of a jar and was warmed in a microwave. Overall, none of my party was impressed with the food or finished our entree. Happened to wander in out of curiosity while my wife got her hair cut and colored next door. The space is small but has a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. I was quickly greeted by a very friendly lady that was more than happy to answer my questions after I explained that I was new and more curious than anything. That was good because it was very close to closing time (lunch only) and since everything is made in house there wasn't much available. I took a look at the menu and saw the cabbage soup which as it turned out was still available. I was happy to take it to go and oh so glad I did! Delish! I can't wait to get back to take other items for a test drive! The Cabbage Roll is a real gem and given the old world atmosphere, exemplary service and food items made in house, from scratch every day I HIGHLY recommend it. Pro tip: They accept Apple Pay! Andy, the owner is right up front--the staff is super nice. Very laid back and casual atmosphere. I got there right at 11 and by the time I got my order to go, the place was filling up nicely--Probably 4-5 tables out of the 8 tables in the front part of the restaurant were in use. Pretty diverse, age-wise--a couple ladies in their 20s, a group of 3 in probably their 30's. Older group of 4 in their 60s-70s. Food wise, most were getting one of the two weekly specials--Fish and fries or Cheeseburger and fries--They do have menus on the tables, and I look forward to trying the Schnitzel and Pierogies next time, but since I was only aware of the specials we got the burger and fries to go. Hard to do a burger wrong, but I did appreciate that they seemed to be hand made smashburgers--edges had that crispiness that a good smashburger has, and crinkle cut fries, which are infinitely better than fast food fries. The real star of the show though, was the dessert case--SO MANY different cakes/pies/tortes/etc. The GF and I are fiends for cheesecake, so I got a slice of praline cheesecake and a slice of snickers cheesecake, which we both loved. Andy confided if I liked cheesecake, to be sure to drop back in--he had made 12 more earlier this week. Price wise--it is what it is--about $35 total for the two of us--minimal tip since I got it to go, but I am always willing to pay more for a local small business, especially if it's good and this was definitely good! Next time I will order ahead and then go pick it up, as it did take about 20 minutes since everything is made to order. Overall I'd give it a solid 8/10, and will be going back. read more

Wonderful. Only downfall is its an hour away from us but thats not their fault at all. Were in town on business and stopped in for lunch. My husband is 3rd gen removed from germany and 2nd american. It was so delicious! I had the cabbage rolls because it IS in the name after all! They were fantastic. Fresh cooked cabbage over a tightly packed roll of seasoned ground beef and fluffy filling rice. with a side of fried potatoes and kraut. The kraut was perfect to throw on everything. the fried potatoes still had their skin so they got major points from me as the skin is full of nutrients and flavor too. My husband practically inhaled his schnitzel. He said it was the most tenderized and easy to eat meal it was smooth like butter. He really enjoyed it. Our meals came with lovely grain breads. complimentary cookies were included at payout. We ordered two desserts to go. Strawberry-Rhubarb pie and chocolate brownie with icing. The desserts like everything are made in house and they have a good size dessert case. Both were worth the every cent. That pie was something straight out of a summer daydream. They have clean bathrooms. And plenty of seating. We got there shortly after opening on a Thursday and the place was beginning to fill by the time we finished up. Owners on hand and cooking and serving! They clearly are devoted to their customers, the food and bringing smiles! I commend any business owner who is so passionate and committed to what they do that they are hands on 100%. We came back a second visit didnt mind the long drive. We got more desserts. I have rated them before as one of the best German restaurants in the Midwest no. 3 behind one in Omaha & one in Milwaukee. Wonderful people, food like my German mother & grandmother made. Simply amazing. We stop here really often. The staff goes above and beyond in service and friendliness. The traditional German food reminds my 3/4 German heritage husband of his grandmas cooking. This place...oh this place is where you make memories! When you first walk inside you can feel that small restaurant/diner feel. Something that has escaped us as newer generations start their businesses. The walls are adorned with many little objects in cases like German ashtrays and figurines, a German smoker, pictures, flags, etc. so much to look at and enjoy. The owner was a very nice, welcoming and friendly person. Along with everyone else that was working there that just makes you feel like you are friends coming over to dinner. I have read some reviews where people were whining about 'oh, it didn't taste like the food in Germany'. Germany is a big country and the food is different in all four corners, so perhaps those reviewers need to travel a little more before they are so quick to judge. Not only did the food definitely remind me of Germany but they also put their own spin on it. So even if it doesn't taste exactly like your 'German Grandma's' recipe, hers probably also doesn't taste like my German grandmother's recipe too. After all, everyone cooks differently. So if you want a break from the typical run-of-the-mill restaurant/eatery and prefer to be treated as an actual person, check this place out. Home style German food. Worth a detour when you're traveling I-29. We stopped with the family for some Schnitzel, sausages, pierogies and all the delicious sides. Like eating at my Oma's house in Germany. The owners were so nice and gracious with our 2 small children even offering some cookies before we left. This simple diner has been here for as long as I can remember. Being a former resident of St. Joe I had been here in the past and recall enjoying their food. On this trip we were looking to compare them to one of our local favorite Polish restaurants. The cabbage rolls were very good; full of meat and with good flavor. The pierogi was tasty, filled, but not overstuffed. It stood out with the toppings that were added making it very good. I also enjoyed the polish sausage that was on the plate as well. Of the sides we tried, the favorite by far was the red cabbage with such an amazing flavor! I also enjoyed the sauerkraut. The German fried potatoes were good, but nothing over the top as was the German potato salad. The owner was super friendly and very grateful that we came to visit on our trip.
