We live around the block from here and have seen their sign out front multiple times while driving by for their Wednesday family meal. We thought we'd give it a shot and we're super excited to try it. I came in right before closing and got the family meal. I was bummed to find out that it includes no barbecue sauce you have to buy separate sides of barbecue sauce (never been to a barbecue place that charges for sauce ever.) in the Wednesday family meal it comes with tri-tip which they charge you $1.50 slicing fee ( never heard of that either) for for our large side we chose cowboy beans which were actually pretty good. They were a little on the spicy side my kids said but I thought they were great. We also opted to get a large side of their mac and cheese which had bacon and to be honest was kind of bland. Our kids didn't like it even though it looked great. You also get a 2 l of soda but the only options are Coke or diet Coke. The meal smelt super good on the way home but once we got it open and started serving it, noticed that the meat was super chewy and really stringy even though the smoke flavor tasted really good. Like some previous reviews on their meal deal have mentioned, It was almost inedible. I don't know if the tri tip that they are giving you as a discount in there family meal is leftover bad cuts or stuff that's just been sitting out simmering and water all day. We thought it sounded like a great deal, but we should have specifically read the reviews about the family meal deal for Wednesdays because we were pretty disappointed. We may try the spot for other a la carte options, but we'll skip the Wednesday family meal deal for sure next time. read more

8/7/25 Getting lunch! Took the convenient route and ordered pickup on DoorDash, Tri-Tip sandwich. Paid for it there and went to pick it up! Arrived! Barbecuing right outside! Walked in, greeted, let worker know, order was ready and handed over with good day wishes! GREAT! Nice inside! A menu with many option and lots of BBQ related food and more! Lunchtime! It's A LOT! They really load you up with Tri-Tip meat! 1/2 is plenty! Tri-Tip sandwich 1/2 was Really Great! Tender & DELICIOUS!! Again, A LOT of meat! GREAT & full! Leftovers too! Was excited to finally stop in and try this place as we see it on our daily drive to Fresno. Staff here is super friendly and deserving of five stars. We opted to get a full trip sliced. Seemed like a great deal at $39.99 with a $1.50 slicing fee. Tri tip smelled great but unfortunately was over cooked and stringy. Was so chewy felt like I was eating taffy as it seemed like you were never going to finish chewing it. We ate a couple of pieces and opted to let our dogs have the rest as it just wasn't good. We got some garlic Parmesan breast that I'm hoping are going to taste better.Not sure if it was an off day because they had a big catering order come in last minute so everyone else got the left overs? I have been buying marinated meat packages and taking it hm to either grill or bake it had been delicious. I took hm chicken breast and another was marinated flank steak I grilled the steak boy was it good and tender . Quite possibly the best Tri Tip sandwich in town. Tender, flavorful, right amount of sauce. Muffaletta is solid. Pastrami is not "New York Style" but that's ok because it is also amazing. We had wanted to come here for so long, unfortunately it was an incredible let down. Ambience: Nice, open with decent flow. The front door was a bit blocked by a pumpkin container, so not easily accessible. Service: Sour. I don't know if we just came during an off time, but service was...unwelcoming. Food/product: they had a nice assortment of goods. Meat: We bought prepacked Ol Western chicken drumsticks and ground chuck. The chuck had WAAAY to much fat. I don't mind some marbling, but his was gross. The drumsticks were strange. They were juicy, but didn't taste chickeny, odd. Lastly, we came because we wanted to support local shops and food. Their prime cuts are from Harris Ranch, but the rest is from Nebraska. We have a lot of California cattle ranches so i don't understand buying meat from so far. Maybe their distributor has better choice product, but based on what we purchased I can't recommend. I hate leaving a negative review, but we threw away the ground beef. The butcher boss is a newer spot right next to Riverstone in Madera on the frontage road for business 41 just south of the entrance of the community. They have a fantastic selection of meats, a small, deli selection, and smiling service. They serve barbecue food, including a delicious tri-tip sandwich, and they also make up some barbecue plates as well. It sits off the road in a nondescript commercial park, and is easy to miss. If you don't look for the smoker, they have thrown up in the front alongside the road. I have come here a few times, and I'm consistently greeted with pleasant people, and good service. I was able to buy a standing rib roast for Christmas, and it turned out amazing. I have also picked up some tri-tip, and just grabbed a ribeye, some pork sausage, and a tri-tip sandwich for dinner tonight. I am so glad to have another local business nearby so that we can support one another. read more

I really wanted to like this place. When I went in the other day, I was so hopeful I had found a new favorite. I love supporting my local businesses. Unfortunately, this place was subpar at best. When I walked in, there was a distinct attitude. I got no welcoming smile, nothing to show "hey, we're glad you're here." I spent a good part of 15 years in the restaurant and foodservice industry. This is not the way to impress someone. They had a selection of produce, which was nice; however, many items in the fridge were expired or past their sell-by date. Packages of lettuce that should've been discarded several days ago. Usually that would've been enough to run, but it's a small operation, and I thought maybe it was just not a great day. When I got to the line to order food, I waited for almost 15 minutes for someone to come out. A man walked by me several times, who clearly worked there and had no interest in telling the other staff that someone was waiting or in helping me. In fact, I was never even acknowledged. Again, I smiled and waited patiently, just hoping that maybe somebody would redeem this whole situation. Instead, the woman who came to the counter had no interest in being personable. She said, "Do you know what you want?" She was completely unkempt and unprofessional. I asked her about several items on the menu, and she didn't seem knowledgeable or, more importantly, like she cared about her job or anyone else, for that matter. God forbid we be civil to one another anymore, strike up a conversation. The entire ambience of the place was cold and very unwelcoming. Essentially, we were on strike two, and I haven't even ordered my food. The location itself is rough; parking during peak hours is not fun, and getting in and out of the building when traffic is heavy is not fun, so be aware. Here comes strike three! I ordered a brisket sandwich and fries. I was charged $35. I took one bite and spit it out. It was positively the most foul-tasting brisket I have ever put in my mouth. It was so overseasoned that my eyes watered. There was so much salt that I would have needed to detox for three days, and there was a robust ammonia taste as if the food had been sprayed with Clorox. I literally had to gargle several times to get the taste out of my mouth. The sandwich bun it was in was so soaked in oil that you couldn't even pick it up--it fell apart. I'm well aware that brisket is the fattest part of the cow, and BBQ is not sodium-friendly, but when I say this was nothing but marbled fat and a bottle of salt, that's an understatement. It had this weird stringy texture. It was unlike any brisket I had ever tasted. The fries were limp and, again, overseasoned. I would love to know what I spent $35 on. I could have gone to the store and smoked my own brisket for far less attitude, time, and money. I really hope they find a way to improve, but I can tell you this was my first -- and last -- time going here. I hate leaving negative reviews, and it takes a lot for me to do so, but as someone who spent the better part of her life in the restaurant and food industry, I feel like criticism is the only way we get better. read more

Thought we would give this place a try since we live out in this area. What a mistake and will never go back. I asked for a pound of liver. What I got was a frozen 4 inch high slab of it. I asked if he could please cut it at least in thirds so I could fry it he said I don't want to cut my fingers off I will just slice it in half. Now I am having to slice it myself as it is still way too thick to cook. I have gone to other meat markets and gotten about 1/2 inch slices to fry. This was my first time ordering from this place. Ordered 2 tri-tip sandwiches along with some sides as my kid didn't want a sandwich. The Tri-tip sandwiches were Mid and although they had good flavor they were a little soggy and the meat seemed like it sat in a warm water bath for awhile. The sides are awful especially the Mac and cheese. Mine came today in all 3 tubs with little to no cheese, no creaminess or nothing just some bacon and noodles with the ever so slightest hint of cheese. The pilaf was decent but a little salty but I enjoyed it. Overall for a first experience it wasn't that great. Quite a plus that The Butcher Boss has tri-tip sandwiches and other barbecue choices with delicious sides, but they also have a market and butcher shop all in one location. My family got to try The Butcher Boss sandwiches at a remote event, and it was the event favorite. So, they do catering too! Prices were excellent and quality was on point. Located in Madera near Business 41, it is convenient to many in the area. Face it, going out is expensive anymore. However, this tri-tip sandwich was reasonably priced and delicious. Why eat fast food, when you have this for a choice. My only hope is that The Butcher Boss opens a location nearer to my area so I can enjoy these sandwiches regularly.
