Came here for brunch about a month ago when the bf and I were in Berlin on vacation. We decided to…read morecome here because of its high ratings on Yelp. We got in just before noon, and we were glad we did because the place got completely full soon after we got seated. The menus were a little confusing as we don't speak any German and the menus had some English pages mixed in with the German pages (the little footnotes were what really confused me, but then I realized that they were using them as markers for different types of allergens). However, it didn't seem that hard to figure out as most of the offerings for brunch offered either cold cuts, cheese, vegetarian spreads, etc. with pastries and such. I opted for their normal sized vegetarian offering (you can ask for a vegan one also) along with coffee and a 20 mL cup of red currant juice. The bf got an order of their scrambled eggs with bacon, along with a 40 mL cup of orange juice. The vegetarian offering I got was amazing. There were a few different slices of cheese, 2 different types of savory spreads (one yogurt based, and the other was some sort of curried spread), and a bunch of fresh fruits. We got a very generous sized basket of bread to share, and it was just a perfect and somewhat light meal. The bf's eggs were delicious, and our juices were fresh and tasy as well. We could easily see why this place was so popular with the locals. Would definitely come back here if I ever happened to find myself in Berlin again.

While in Berlin, I stumbled across this place called Bastard through browsing reviews on Yelp, I…read moredecided to call in here not only because of the good reviews but the fact the place is called Bastard, which is a name which probably wouldn't be allowed in my home-country of the United Kingdom. This place is located in quite a rough area of Berlin, as I recall it was on the 248 bus route, yet buses in Berlin is a system I've struggled with mainly down to having so many stops without any proper signage for example one bus might go from one stop, another from another. This place isn't in a great location as I said, you can even find some graphiti on the walls as you go in to the small inside seating area. The menu was quite restrictive and authoritarian in the sense you couldn't personalise your dishes or tweak them, despite it being fresh food which was a shame and alongside the location, the major flaw of this place. For example, they had a meal with Fried eggs and other things which I didn't want, and they refused to just do fried eggs. I ordered Scrambled Eggs with Bacon, this was quite good quality and a much better breakfast than I could have had at my Hilton hotel in Berlin, but still I found the side dishes to go with it such as beans and the choice of that to be poor, they only had "fresh" bread, gluten bread, which didn't taste too great. I also was impressed with the range of fresh juices which were quite cheap at 2.40 euros each for 0.2L, I ordered a mixed juice as I recall it contained pumpkin and apple and a few other things, and I enjoyed it, albeit my first choice being a pear juice was sold out. The waitress seemed friendly enough but it was frustrating they had run out of products such as the pear juice and couldn't slightly amend their dishes and they didn't have gluten free bread. The place inside was small and really busy, it had an old-fashioned theme to it, it wasn't the nicest place in terms of décor, it is probably something one would expect to find in Manchester's Northern Quarter for example, which is my home town. The food and beverage mentioned was good quality, but the location and inability to slightly personalise your dish and the selection overall was quite poor. Was the food worth the wait to get a table and my trip to find it? I'd guess so, but still due to the major flaws I still feel Bastard doesn't deserve anything other a three star rating.

If I could move back to Berlin, I'd definitely trek over to Neukölln a few mornings a week to hole…read moreup here to nurse an americano (and a glass of locally brewed passionfruit kombucha served with a glass straw!) after scarfing down their take on a vegetarian English breakfast. As a San Franciscan, I've often found that the brunch offerings in Berlin leave a lot to be desired, leaving me craving something just a bit heartier. In other words, as much as it pains me to admit this, German breakfasts of bread, cheese, jam, and sliced meat don't really cut it for me and my unrefined American palate. Oh wait. We're in Europe now. How about another Anglicized breakfast?! I have a soft spot for baked beans on toast. And before visiting Mahlo Brunch Bar, the only ways to get my fix were 1. hopping on a plane to London or 2. buying questionably dented cans of imported Heinz baked beans. This place puts so much love into their big brekky (two fried eggs, mushrooms, baked beans on sourdough toast, oven-roasted tomato, avocado, salad with pomegranate), atmosphere, decor, and service that I'm 100% certain that anyone who comes here and orders anything on the menu (that I unfortunately cannot really attest to, as I'm a creature of habit) will enjoy one of the best breakfasts they'll have in Berlin. In fact, I don't even think I'll enjoy future English breakfasts in London as much. Mahlo Brunch Bar has also revolutionized how I think about fried eggs--paprika or bust! You'll also find the best kombucha in all of Berlin here (lovingly brewed elsewhere in Neukölln). And even though Berlin has way too many dreary days to count (or think about), this place always seems to have a lovely amount of natural light that goes well with the minimalist design. I miss the year I spent in Berlin. But more importantly, I miss Mahlo Brunch Bar. (They even take card!)

Super awesome spot. They use organic (bio) eggs with their breakfast. I had the "build your own…read morebreakfast" with 3 poached eggs, avocado, roasted tomatoes, and baked beans. Really tasty! Sofia was my waitress. She was great ;) They get a bit packed sometimes, so just be aware of that.

And thats saying a lot considering I grew up on New York Bagels. The ingredients were incredibly fresh, the presentation is just gorgeous, and it was absolutely delicious. The cream cheese has a hint of lemon oil in it that just brings the entire dish together. The space itself is super cozy and cute, i sat on a high top chair by the window and enjoyed watching passersby's eyes open wide at the amazing food The menu is very limited but it all looked amazing, other peoples dishes at tables beside me looked large and beautiful as well so I have no doubt everything here is a hit! This is one of my last meals in berlin but I wish I could come here every morning!!! Service was fast and friendly as well :-) 10/10 homerun cafe

Would you like a crowded café with an Instagram aesthetic (ranging from the food to the decor) and a fast-paced meal or something more Berlin -- a lowkey living room-esque vibe with meat and cheese galore? Thankfully, bRICK manages to bridge these two identities for a peaceful weekend brunch that'll make you feel like you're right at home. I stopped by on a recent Saturday morning to find it half empty, more or less. The customer service was a little brusque (not surprising) though not overtly so as its hipster decor might allude to. I had the "Brickfast" -- the most Californian option on the menu (with Berlin prices). It included two fried eggs, grilled cheese (as in, thin blocks), avocado, hummus, homemade tomato cream cheese (!), olives, bread, and a small salad. The tomato cream cheese was definitely a nice touch, though I was a little disappointed that the tomato taste was just a bit too subtle for me to actually discern. And the eggs left me wanting more... more water, actually, because they were way too salty! But points for effort because there was so much food, I guess?

Delicious Southern food and attentive service at a restaurant in Berlin? Well, those are two things…read morethat I thought I'd never find in this city! Tucked away in Prenzlauer Berg, Southern Vittles is an authentic restaurant that checks all of the boxes. I haven't done much soul food exploring stateside, but one of my brunch go-tos is chicken and waffles. And since it's swept the nation from coast to coast, I've had to put up with various quirks, ranging from dry chicken to a stingy amount of overpriced chicken. But this was some of the best chicken and waffles I've ever had. The chicken was so tender that it stole the show, but the sweetness from the maple syrup made it taste even better. (Part of me wishes that the maple syrup hadn't been drizzled onto the chicken in the kitchen and that it would come on the side, but the chef poured the perfect amount, so I can't really complain.) And because I came on a weekend morning, I got to enjoy the bottomless coffee service. It doesn't seem that special because it's from your standard coffee machine, but what really made it stand out was how the owner would walk around with the coffee pot and ask if I wanted a refill. (Alas, it reminds me of how servers in the U.S. constantly come around for water refills...!) And the coffee also tasted better than some of the burnt excuses for coffee that some fancier places in the city sell, so don't look down on a simple cup of joe. Speaking of the owner, he provided the best service that I've ever experienced in a Berlin restaurant. The small talk (imagine that!) made me feel like I was back home in the U.S. The prices (given the exchange rate) made me second guess that feeling a bit, but I can't deny the deliciousness of the meal or the friendliness of the owner.
