The only food options were fish n chips, pizza or the Chinese restaurant that my parents would take as for a "special meal" (and still do!). The "Packet" was a place as an 18 year old (or maybe a "few" days younger)me and pretty much all my high school hung out on a Friday night. Over the years it's grown up (as have I - we'll sorta). It's everything you'd expect of a local pub. Reasonably priced drinks and food. The portions are MASSIVE. And unlike other places that adopt the philosophy of cramming too much food on your plate, the food still tastes great. If your not too hungry you could share a meal between two (but where's the fun in that?). Not a huge amount of tap beers and a fairly limited wine list. But you're here for the food and fun times. If it's a nice night, get in early to score an outside table as there are only a few.

You go to your table, choose what you want to eat and go up to order. We did notice food was coming out fairly quickly, but also seemingly randomly considering the way we saw people go up to order. Our meal took way longer than expected, but it was enjoyable when it finally came. The chicken kiev was perfectly golden brown on the outside and the fries were great, and while the rice was lovely, I didn't feel it fit the meal. With that said, everyone liked their meal and I'd come back here again for another casual meal be it lunch or dinner. They have their own on site parking out the back, or there's plenty out front. The food is well priced and the service is friendly enough. Give this a go!

I personally liked it actually, though I suspect that it was because the service wasn't bad, they had some good beers available, and there was a beer garden out the back. While it might not be one of those pubs that really stands out in my mind, it is still a rather pleasant place, and it certainly isn't like the pubs out in my area. Having good beers on tap also helps quite a lot, and this pub certainly succeeded in this regard.

Then again, I doubt you would see an awesome Salvadore Dali and David Bowie poster in a one star pokie machine infested pub. However, the Pier is maginificent, and certainly one of my favourites in the area. Definitely a place I'd try again (which is what I have done, if only to sit out the back staring at the huge poster of David Bowie).

The food is solid, typical Australian gastro pub fare (a mixture of steaks, roasts and Asian fusion salads). Prices are high---not great value for money, but you're paying for the bay side location. I think I was in charge of lunch arrangements and did a terrible job of it. In fact, we showed up here around 1pm for lunch for 8 adults and 3 kids with no reservations - I'm glad they were able to accommodate us as I had no real backup plan (I blame jetlag). They seated us in the outdoor area which is undercover and was just perfect for us as the kids were able to run wild without bothering anyone else. It's a really good set up, and even though it was a pretty hot day it wasn't too hot out there. The food was really good and even though we were off in our own area, service was pretty decent. I'd definitely head back to this pub for another meal next time we're in town - it's got a lovely park over the road for kids, and is right near the beach. Just perfect.

Yeah, since there are some nice pubs in the area, this one is probably somewhat avoidable.

Despite me lusting after the dessert I followed the done thing and chose a main first, the barramundi. I was instantly in love with the mouth watering, succulent barra on a bed of sweet corn and spicy harissa. I caught myself eating it so quickly due to the immense deliciousness and I had to slow my self down as I did not want it to end. My dining companions all thoroughly enjoyed their dishes including my 3 year old niece who ordered fish and chips from the kids menu. The largest and most fancy kids fish and chips I have seen. It must have been good as she polished it off with some willing help with the chips from those around her. Choosing a dessert when faced with such a comprehensive list of tempting combinations including a special of chocolate brownie with caramel sauce and peanut butter ice-cream is a serious dilemma. I definitely don't wish to suffer from dessert envy. Being a hot and steamy day I seek the counsel of our waitress and upon her recommendation I choose the O'Connells Mess. The dessert chef at O'Connells has some serious talent with all things frozen. The watermelon granita on my O'Connells's mess was the star of the dish, along with the perfect little meringues. I so wished there were more meringues. I had the pleasure of sampling from my companions dishes the peanut butter ice-cream which was so creamy and peanuty, the spectacular chocolate sorbet and the amazingly zingy pina colada sorbet. O'Connells should open their own ice cream/sorbet shop. It would even rival Jock's. The restaurant is a perfect venue for a special occasion or a family get together in one of the private rooms that seats up to 26.
