    Fish n' chips

Sit upstairs on a sunny day and you'll be treated to beautiful views of Skerries harbour, an awful pity then that this prettily decorated restaurant beside the ever popular (and deservedly so) Blue Bar falls down where taste is concerned. Not content to wait forty minutes for a table in Blue Bar, we decided to give The Brick House a go instead. I had the blandest salad I have ever eaten as a starter, it was completely nondescript and lacking the pecans mentioned on the menu. The fish main I had was miles better in comparison but still lacked that oomph of flavour to make it truly memorable, though it was a welcome change to standard fish and chips, as it was lightly fried rather than being enveloped in batter. When you have an outstanding restaurant as your competition right next door, serving bland and mediocre food is just not going to cut it. Next time, I'l bite the bullet and join the queue for Blue Bar rather than settle for the 'mehness' of the food on offer here.

The Brick House doesn't look like a restaurant but someone's house. A decent sized one mind you, but still. Having spent the day walking around in the spring sun in Skerries, we stopped here for a coffee and a bite to eat. We grabbed a seat outside to get most of the sun that day. They offer a faily decent tapas menu plus a regular a la carte menu as well. I opted for the seafood chowder and himself had the chicken wings and a goats cheese & onion marmelade dish off their tapas menu. We sat there for a while before we realized there is no table service. So inside we went to place our order. The tab water is 'double filtered' and therefore they charge you for it. Certainly new to Ireland but I have a feeling we'll be seeing much more of this over the coming months. The food was ok. The portion of wings was small but the goats cheese dish made up for that. My chowder was very watery but had a nice flavour. When it was served however, the waiter didn't come back with cutlery so it was already getting cold by the time I finally got my spoon. So overall a very nice location but next time I'm out in that neck of the woods I would try a different place.

I love tapas so I was looking forward trying theirs. We sat outside (even though it was March) and with the blankets provided and the glass shelter it was a lovely spot to sit, watch people passing by and looking out on the harbour. The Tapas were tasty but I was a bit disappointed by the size - price relation. Especially seeing that it is Skerries and not Dublin I had expected either lower prices or bigger portions. My friend and I both went for two dishes as it was only meant as a middle sized meal but we were still pretty hungry after that so had the garlic bread on top. The staff was friendly but even though we weren't the only ones sitting outside they didn't check on us very often.

First impressions of The Brick House were good,. It was a beautiful day in Skerries and we had been out walking the throughout the town so was properly looking forward to some nourishment. The place looked lovely and had a really nice period feel to it. We were shown to a window seat so it really was winning straight away. We went for the early bird and here is where the whole place almost floundered upon the rocks. I had the spicy chicken wings and my partner had the buffalo mozzarella and beetroot salad. They really were so disappointing. So so bland, both tasted precisely of nothing. The salad was meant to be accompanied by a walnut pesto. Neither of us could get a hint of it. The place was heading for one star hell!! It was rescued by the very impressive pan fried fish and chips. The fish was hake and we both agreed that it and its accompaniments were as nice a fish dish as we have had in a very long time. We skipped having any dessert after the poor showing of the starters!!

My friend's salmon was good and my husband's chowder was pretty good - just not thick.

The two connecting dining rooms are amazing and cozy, with a big bar counter at the back, wine racks and a huge assortment of whimsical objects or artwork around the place. Upstairs there's a terrace where you can fully enjoy their tapas menu and maybe even go for a cocktail. There's a set dishes menu, a smaller tapas menu and also the specials of the day, written on a big blackboard - that our hostess kindly perched on a chair in front of our table, improptu style. In both fixed menus there are many vegetarian and/or gluten free options. The wine list was interesting enough, though not perfect. I managed to find a beautiful spanish Verdejo there, so that must count for something. We were served delicious food and the only thing I can point is that my vegetarian stuffed zucchini had a bit too much cheese, but other than that everything was good and their special of the day, salmon, was cooked perfectly. Unfortunately we were both too full to try the desserts, but at least we got to to wrap our lunch up with a nice espresso.

We were fortunate to experience Le Basement during our time in Dublin…read more It's located on the second floor of a restaurant in a small office sized room with a bar, sofa seats, and a few dining tables. When we came they had a band already playing. It was honestly like an American jam sess where people can come up and sing and perhaps play if the request is honored. My husband asked the guitarist if he could join and the guitarist was gracious enough to loan him his guitar and pick as we are foreigners and didn't pack his guitar for our trip. He was able to play for about three songs and it was amazing to see the two cultures mix and mingle on stage. You could tell that the vibe changed throwing him in the mix. I would imagine this magical mix occurs each time they invite any unique talent that visits Le Basement. The drinks were inexpensive, the environment was welcoming, and the music was soulful.

Presented in a similar style to the famous Parisian Jazz clubs, you descend the stairs to a small and atmospheric room with soft lighting and comfortable leather seating. There is decent quality beer on tap and array of the usual alcohol options available with a decent looking menu if you fancy a bite to eat (although I did not). Most evenings around the weekend there is a live Jazz act and, on the night I was there, we had a delightful lady singer with a fantastic voice and a great support band. Table service is available and the staff are friendly and prompt. There is a cover charge ranging from €5 to €8 depending on who is playing. Le Basement is part of Le Cirk - a hotel/bar on Dame Street. If you are looking for a romantic spot to take your partner or just a place to appreciate some quality jazz tunes, then look no further. I highly recommend Le Basement.

Fine for vegetarians, not great for vegans (2/5 Green Stars)…read moreI looked up Duende and the name refers to either charm or a supernatural spirit - maybe both :-) Well, I'm not sure if there are any supernatural spirits in the house but it is a charming place. With a brick wall on one side, a large mural on the other, and candles on every table, it's a welcoming place. Staff members were also very friendly and helpful - props to the chap from Nicaragua. It's a pretty meat-focused place. If you are vegetarian, you'll have several options, but if vegan you'll find the menu fairly limited. We shared the Hummus & Crudités (€9.80), the Pizza Catalan Veg (€15) and a couple of beers and enjoyed everything. This was actually pretty filling dinner (the pizza was large) for a reasonable €37. The pizza (tomato sauce, mozzarella, spinach, pesto, Manchego shaving, and mozzarella cheese) was really good thanks to a nice crust and lots of fresh spinach and garlic. The hummus was also very good and nicely presented, with veggies and grilled bread. Would definitely come again but wish there were more plant-based options. I'm giving Duende 2 out of 5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, for these reasons: * There's a lot of meat on the menu. One of the best things that Duende could to is to offer some more plant-based alternatives, especially to the beef. Offering a Beyond burger (or equivalent) as a substitute to the beef burger would be a great start. * More information on food sourcing should be provided. * Beer is available on draft, reducing packaging and transportation footprints.
