If you're looking for a classic Duluth spot with hearty comfort food, Grandma's Saloon & Grill…read moredelivers a solid, no-frills experience. On our visit, I went with the deep-fried walleye, which felt like the right choice given the location. The fish was crisp on the outside and flaky on the inside. It's exactly what you hope for with a Northwoods staple. It wasn't overly greasy like grandma would make it and the portion size was generous enough to leave me satisfied without feeling weighed down.It could have used some salt or lemon pepper. My wife ordered the chicken pot pie, and that turned out to be a standout in its own right. It came out piping hot with a golden, flaky crust, and the filling was rich and creamy with plenty of chicken and vegetables. Definitely a comfort dish done well.I haven't seen it made this way.The crust just covered the filling. My father-in-law kept it lighter with a salad served in a bowl, which was fresh and straightforward. There was nothing fancy, but a good option if you're not in the mood for something heavy. The atmosphere leans casual and welcoming, with a bit of that cozy, slightly touristy charm you'd expect from a long-standing local favorite. Service was friendly and efficient, even with a steady crowd. It's not trying to reinvent anything and that's kind of the point. You come here for dependable food, generous portions, and a relaxed setting, and on that front, it delivers.

Service was delightful. Our server was outgoing, polite and attentive…read more I had the chicken tetrazzini which was okay. The cream sauce was really heavy and the chicken was fair. The crispy cheese top was very tasty, however. It was good enough that I would go back, but only to try something else. The place is a haven of comfort food in a very relaxed, homey setting and I'd like to take a lap through the menu. I prefaced my entree with a very good French onion soup and a side salad with a delightful vinaigrette. And if you come to Grandma's, bring your appetite - the portion sizes are more than fair!
