What a great way to experience traditional Irish folktales through music, song, and a live band. Dating back to 1198, the Brazenhead is one of Ireland's oldest pubs. Brazenhead is located on Bridge Street, where the original settlement of Dublin began. The Irish name for Dublin is Baile Átha Cliath - which means "The Town of the Ford of the Reed Hurdles". Brazenhead relates to an old legend of a brass head that could predict the future. The restaurant has a unique collection of its past displayed on the walls and ceilings. It's quite colorful and historical. The minute you step foot into Brazenhead, it immediately takes you back to what feels like the Medieval times. The staff was amazing. They were very friendly, helpful, and attentive. The restaurant got insanely packed. However, that's what made it even more fun. The patrons were lively, singing along to old Irish tales as the live band played an array of flutes, whistles, fiddles, and accordions. What a blast! The food was good. I enjoyed the traditional Guiness Stew, a juicy burger, and fish and chips. Everything was good. The burger was especially good with a juicy meat patty, bacon, and lettuce and tomatoes. The Guiness Stew could have had a tad bit more flavor. The fish and chips were good. We also enjoyed the traditional Guiness on draft with a splash of Currant. This was recommended by a few locals, and it was absolutely delicious. Overall, this restaurant is a great way to experience Dublin and the heritage and culture of the Irish. Before I left Dublin- I had to make sure I made my way to Ireland's oldest pubs to grab a pint. The pub is open and inviting and the seating is first come first serve. If there is a chair or a stool available -it's fair game. I did not try the food but the staff was still quite pleasant as I ordered a pint. As it is the "oldest" expect to find a lot of tourists doing what I was doing. It's definitely not an "off the beaten path spot but a "must visit" when visiting Dublin. read more

Our last night in Dublin we had such a good time in the live music room at this Pub. The crowd was in a real party mood and the Irish Music was the best. It's a smallish room though--one of many rooms in the old Pub--reportedly the oldest in Dublin. Wish we would have got here earlier for dinner--kitchen closes at 9:30 pm on a Friday night. Fun place for music, dancing, drinking--however they have an outside courtyard where smoking is allowed and the smoke condition was so thick it was barely passable. read more

Biggest issue is we kept get sent room to room until I finally muscled my way into the live music room. - (I'm really glad I did - it's to the right on the lower level) There's a room dedicated to the live band and there ARE rules: - Be respectful and don't chat while they are playing and singing - Sing along. They love that and encourage audience participation. Service - you go to the bar and place your order. Totally fine with that. I want to go back to this place. Oldest pub in Dublin! Well that's an automatic MUST for me. I popped in last week for dinner and a drink. The patio was super smoky and as a non smoker I couldn't handle more than a minute or two out there, that's when I went opening random doors in search of an empty spot for one. I found one in the small nook of the pub to the right of what the main dining area is. This was the perfect cozy little area to snag a barstool, a beer and their beef and Guinness stew, both of which totally hit the spot. If you're in Dublin I'd definitely recommended finding your way to the Brazen Head, very fun and super busy spot. I walked here from my hotel as most everything in Dublin is walkable. read more

So get this, I land in Ireland and set off on a quest for a pint of Guinness and some food. I come across a random pub and grab a seat, only to find out that this wasn't just any old pub. This was THE old pub. The oldest pub in Ireland at that! Now I've heard that Guinness in Ireland tastes different than it does in America - better. I'm happy to report back, that the rumors are absolutely true. It was SO creamy and delicious. The only downside is that with the heavy, creaminess of it all, you might not be able to have too many rounds before you start getting full. My beef and Guinness stew however was just alright. Didn't taste exceptional in any way, but was hearty and filling. The historical value of this place makes it worth a visit, despite not having the best food. Grab a pint and have a taste of Ireland.
