This is a terrible company to deal with. I signed up for a $1 promotion and they zapped my credit card for $27 a week before it ended and will not refund. I am a low income person and this a huge hardship for me. I am so upset with the Boston Globe. "rdredsox02@gmail.com" read more

Boston Globe is a scam machine overcharging for mediocre content. Here's the proof: I went to a red sox game last month and the Globe was doing a "promotion". They were saying "just 10 bucks a month for the Sunday Globe. Step on up it's a STEAL!!" I thought "10 bucks a month? I can swing that! Plus if the paper stinks I can cancel and stop paying the 10 bucks a month. Hell, I'll even sign up my brother and pay 20 bucks a month!" I got the paper a few weeks later. The content was skimpy. What there was for content was hardly insightful. The reporters must have been half-assing or snoozing that week. Cmon guys there's a whole world out there!!! Note: my brother never got a single paper over several weeks. Globe: get more creative with your content and work on quality. Nothing was worth reading in your paper. The Internet beats you, and we all know how bad it can get online (case in point being my current troll tirade). And half the paper was full of ads. If you have so many advertisers why not make the paper free to read? Moving on... (this is where it gets juicy) Be forwarned!!! The Globe markets their subscription as "10 bucks a month" but takes out a years subscription in one financial transaction. Globe, please note: if you market 10 bucks a month, take out 10 bucks a month. It's that simple. Don't take over 100 dollars at once (230 in my case)! What business on earth says "20 bucks a month" and takes out 230 in an afternoon? Who doesn't do monthly payments anymore??? Who says something is 20/month and fails to mention an annual charge? Nobody reads the terms you make us sign. If you refuse to do monthly payments, then your salesmen need a class in business ethics. At least tell customers up front that it will be an annual transaction and stay away from breaking it down monthly. One word for you Globe: MISLEADING. Long story short my bank was overdrawn. I got whacked with overdrafts, and I called to cancel immediately. The process of canceling was marred by red tape, and the service reps were rude. Or perhaps I was short because my checking was in the red. "What is your brother's address?" I can remember the street name and I know the town. Not sure on the house number. "We cannot cancel without an EXACT address." Told my brother to call and cancel. "Only the card holder can cancel. Your name is not tied to the transaction." I call back. A dozen options to get through automated system. "Globe billing is closed at this time (5 pmish). Next day I get through (btw I am 98% sure you can only cancel by talking to someone; I looked everywhere to cancel online. "So, uh, why are you cancelling?" Really? Use some intuition bub. I just told you my bank was overdrawn. Wouldn't you cancel? I need my money back TODAY. "That will take up to 7 business days to process". Thanks Globe. Now I have to eat off my credit card. Globe: consider restructuring everything. Make your paper fun, enlightening, and informative. Emphasize a quality customer experience. Prioritize empathy and compassion from your service reps. Get out of the stone age with your billing. It's all about the monthly payments in this economy. Make your refunds happen ASAP. Jump on board or be left behind. read more

Whoever handles the subscription or distribution either in house or contractor is very poor. I had signed up for Sunday delivery only--never to received the paper this went on for three/3 weeks. When I called I was told next week yadda yadda yadda but no paper still. So my final call was to cancel. Had a had a bad time canceling despite calling. And I finally got them to stop billing me I believe when I sent in the bill via cert mail, then I got an email solicitation and I sent back in acid reply I called/cancelled and never got the paper and I paid the 8/eight dollars so it would not go to collections. So I got another call and they did send me the 8 dollar refund. Now I am getting the solicitations by mail again--they go straight to recycle. And I want to note, I believe this is same company/in-house or contractor that handles sale circular deliveries for grocery and big box chains. We stopped getting flyers about 10 years ago, despite all my calls efforts never to resume. People in other parts of town get them without an issue, so I have no clue why we are bypassed but I felt like it was tied into the Sunday paper delivery not showing up either which is why after 3-4 weeks with no paper I bailed. Sometimes I buy the paper on Sunday and sometimes I don't it depends, but my mom still misses being able to look at the circulars. read more

Horrible billing. Called spoke to a supervisor, charged credit card and not receive credit as promised. Don't ever subscribe to this newspaper. read more

What. A. Joke. I've been through it before and the pleasant subscription sales person sucked me back in. I don't NEED an old fashioned, printed paper. But thought I'd give Sunday delivery a try for cheap access to the Globe online. Three weeks and multiple calls later, I have yet to receive a newspaper. After sitting on hold for the call center in The Philippines for 10 minutes, I get the same poorly read script that they will credit my account and I will have it next Sunday by "eightaeyem." Sadly, I've already paid in advance but once again, the Globe has lost, yet another, subscriber. For good this time. read more

I signed up for the globe for 99 cents for six months. At the end of August, that 6 months ended and I was charged 27.72. I realized this day would come and decided I did not think it was worth it to keep my subscription for another month. I called the globe a week later to cancel my subscription because the only way to cancel is to call during specific hours. I was on hold for a while but the automated system asked if I would like an employee to call me back at a later date in order to help me to cancel. I accepted that option and hung up. However, still no one has called. At the end of September I was charged again for 27.72. After realizing that they charged me again, I attempted to reach them through alternative means, Facebook messenger and their website. Om Facebook messenger, an automated reply told me that no one was available but they would get back to me soon. That was nearly a week ago. On their website, I chatted with an automated system, who took my email address and assured me someone would follow up. However, this still has not happened. I am still waiting for a phone call, a message, or an email. I will be thinking of other options to cancel my subscription and obtain a refund. read more

I don't even subscribe to this newspaper, or anything associated with it, but they throw their ad package "Globe Direct" onto my property once every couple weeks. I have contacted them repeatedly via multiple methods for about a year now asking them to stop. Every single time they tell me they will, that I'm already on the "do not deliver" list, and that they'll escalate, but the bag of ad trash continues to be tossed onto my property. What a trashy company. read more

I love the Globe. I go south for the winter and learned to appreciate the Globe even more. But, we've been back a month and have received our paper probably 75% of the time. Feels like 50% as I stand in the cold rain looking under the cars and bushes. We found the Globe customer contact sight hard to use, hence this. I know they need subscribers and we like a paper paper. We grouse as we sit here reading on our phones. I was called by a customer rep. I appreciate that. Thank you. My problem seems to be handled. The nice man asked where I would like my paper and I said " just not in the puddle or under the car." It worked. Really late patriots game last night and it was in the Cape Edition Yeah!!! read more

So to finish my trilogy, after my last post I did receive a message from Rachel with a direct number along with the usual we are sorry. I called her this morning. Very nice and professional. However she was not able to fix the problem. She told me the same baloney that the first customer rep told me when I cancelled. Nothing she could do. Asked me if I was a senior citizen?? Really. Bottom line here is this. I have been a Boston globe home delivery customer for almost 20 years. That is probably about $15000.00 I have spent. For $1.50 a month they are losing me. If I pay with a credit card, it will cost them that much. I am done with them. One last question for the globe. You knew what the issue was. If you did not intend to fix it why did you bother to have me contact you?? Why did not a supervisor call me?? Too many other options today to be treated poorly. I will not spend anymore time on this. read more

Dear Boston Globe, Fine, you aren't what you used to be, and your sports writing can get to be a little trite (memo: Just because Bill Simmons says something doesn't mean you should freak out). But, you have many qualities that make you my favorite morning "kinda national" paper: - You're still far more inquisitive than most of your national cousins, and on issues that may actually matter. - You have a comics page, which makes me happy (though I'm still trying to figure out whether Mallard Fillmore is supposed to be funny... is it?) - You have that cool full page sheet of sports that don't involve the Red Sox (my personal favorite part is when you call Rangers "Glasgow Rangers", because I find that fun) - Your TV reporter likes "The Wire", "30 Rock", and "Battlestar Galactica". Overall, I appreciate the big boy of Massachusetts media. It does what it has to do, and does it well. And they've got that website too. So keep on getting all up ons, Globe. read more

The paper itself? I like it! The Globe's home delivery people? NO!!!!! Here are examples of what Im talking about: 1. A few years ago: Delivery person throws papers from street to steps, misses every time, then yells obscenities and knocks over trash cans to get to the errant paper at 5 a.m. 2. Recently: Different delivery person drives slowly down street with her two kids hanging onto the BACK of the car, shrieking and laughing. Then they jump off, deliver papers, and climb back on, shrieking and laughing again, this at 4 a.m. 3. Now: Yet another delivery person comes down our street with his music BLASTING at 4:30 a.m. When he stops at each house to delivery, he elaves his door open, making it LOUDER. Emails to the Globe about this go unanswered, and try calling: you press 6, hear a message, press 5, hear the same message, wait, wait, etc. Not all delivery people are like this, but my God, what brainless behavior. read more

I enrolled in a 1-month promotional introductory subscription for 99 cents. I paid a total of $3.94 for the month. Two weeks into this promotional subscription I was billed $27.99 for the next month. My month hadn't even run out and I was billed for the next. My intention was to cancel by the end of the month (and I was only two weeks in) so I called that very morning and asked for a refund since I was going to cancel my subscription by the end of the month anyway. They said there was nothing they can do because they bill 2 weeks ahead of time. I looked in their terms of agreement and there is nowhere in there that says they build two weeks at a time. It does say their bill in advance but I would see that as a day or two and not two weeks into a subscription . That loophole is entrapment for people who don't realize they are being charged . Crooked ! I've never heard of a company doing this. I told him I did not expect that money to come out of my account I wanted it refunded. They said there was nothing they can do and the refund would happen in two weeks when my 1-month subscription ran out. How can a company make you pay for a subscription you're not using and your other subscription hasn't even run out yet? I would not recommend the Boston Globe to anyone as they refused to give me my refund until July 21st. Even though the subscription I paid for which was $3.94 was the one good until July 21st. The person on the phone condescendingly said "well at least you're getting it back.. it's not like you paid for it". I explained that I did pay for it even though they are going to refund it in two weeks. Complete nonsense and I would not recommend the Boston Globe. read more

Email I sent to Boston Globe reporter: (great article today about crisis) Thank you for your article. I am sending my comments to you as I don't know where else to send them. I am generally sympathetic to businesses undergoing transitions. A couple weeks of missed papers is not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. However, I would hope the Globe management appreciates how completely miserably they have managed this situation. Don't blame the distributor. This is your paper and this was your decision. Take responsibility. Personal update, I called AMEX, charge disputed, merchant block put on account. Globe, fight it out with AMEX and call me when you are ready to offer a proper apology and start regular service again. Why? Ambiguous statements, false information, unanswered phone lines, useless chat lines, no one taking responsibility, no one telling telling me the plan. The Globe has done all things possible to aggravate and disappoint this loyal reader. I am done! The imaginary article I should have been reading. John Henry takes control of this crisis. "I take full responsibility I will do everything possible to get the papers to our loyal readers. Whatever it takes, whatever the costs. There is nothing more important to us than our subscribers." he is quoted. John Henry commandeered all free taxis and delivery services to get the paper out. If you did not get your paper, call this 800 number and they will do their best to send someone out with your paper. We will continue until normal service is restored. What I actually heard when I finally got through to automated customer service (paraphrasing). "We are sorry for the delay. Unfortunately we cannot offer re-delivery. Press # 1 to receive credit." read more

I hate the Boston Globe! Now I know why they are going out of business. It never gets delivered to the right address, or at all in most cases. And then you complain and demand they bring you the past 8 weeks of papers they weren't delivering and they refuse. I subscribe to "Sunday Only" and receive a paper maybe once a month, and that's only after several phone calls. Do yourselves a favor and buy a Herald. read more

OMG - what is happening to this paper? Glad Customer Service is now in the US but whoever delivers the papers to east Foxboro is horrible. Out of 7 weeks I only got the paper on Sunday 2 of them. and they were delivered to the wrong building (there are 2 in my complex that are open). I was told today that "there really isn't anything we can do as it is a delivery problem". NO KIDDING. "And they would send the delivery service another note about my problem". I think they need to find another delivery company as this one sucks big time. One more time and then I am cancelling the globe permanently. I'll save some money! read more

Worst customer service ever! I've been on hold for over an hour trying to cancel my subscription!

I grew up with the Globe. Delivered it as a kid through my teens. Always reading it of course. Mostly the sports pages, but occasionally the business, travel, living, etc. This paper is the standard by which I review all others. None have reached it's quality. Some have come close. Being in the Dallas, TX area now, I have to read the paper from the internet. I'm surprised they haven't started charging for all paper content online. read more

I am so disappointed in the globes customer service. I tried to cancel my subscription and I was super polite. I live in Denver and saw the headline for an interesting article and so signed up with their on-line $1 for 6 months deal so I could read it. I saw nothing about an automatic transfer to a $27.72 charge for every 4 weeks after that. I really never looked at the on-line paper and only glanced at their occasional newsletters. Today I got my credit card statement with $27.72 on it. Since I didn't even know how to access "my account", I called the number on the cc statement. Asked for "subscriptions", but that woman couldn't help, said she'd transfer me to "accounts", I waited and after not a short while it hung up on me, I called back, finally got a person who said tough, I was stuck for the whole month. I said "send me what I signed up on" and she said couldn't do it because it was on-line. I wonder how many people they have cheated out of $27.72 this way, and how much of other people's time they've wasted trying to cancel and get their money back. I liked the movie "Spotlight", but that's the only nice thing I can say about The Boston Globe. Scumbags. read more

John Henry has destroyed this paper and put a permanent wedge between its loyal readers and the paper. Nice job John. I cant even get thru to cancel the paper. No one answers the phone or emails. If they don't allow us to cancel the paper, then they can still call us customers to their advertisers and therefore keep getting advertising $$. Another BS move by the Henries. FYI; my neighbors who never even ordered the Globe are getting the same sporadic delivery as I am. In fact, get this, one day they both got a paper and I didn't. My only reasoning for this is; give away the paper and call them all customers. The advertisers will be thrilled with this until they catch on. Here something ironic, I used to be a globe paperboy in the 60's. I'd get up at 4am to deliver and if I wasn't there on time I'd here about it. Its all about the power and the $ now right John? read more

We had been staying at another location during this COVID crisis, so I used the Globe's automated voice system to suspend delivery of my Globe for one month. After the suspension ended I called the Globe to ask when my account would be credited, but they told me they couldn't find any record of my suspension so they wouldn't credit me for it. They made no effort to try to figure out what had happened or to try to resolve the situation. With so many other news sources available these days one might think the Globe would make an effort to provide their subscribers with good service, but instead they do just the opposite: charge exorbitant prices, provide crappy service, cheat their customers out of money that they're owed, and do all of this completely unapologetically. I had been a Globe subscriber since 1998, but I can't put up with this any more. read more

I've always liked the Globe, even before I lived in Boston. I feel like it has been on the steady decline these past couple of years though. It has a bias, but it's a bias I'm ok with. It leans slightly to the left. I lean heavily to the left, so the paper is too conservative for me if anything, but that just makes me feel more respect for it than I feel for the NYT which I feel bends over backwards to be more liberal and more intellectual than anyone and everyone else to the point where it becomes a straw-man and a self-parody. The Globe leans to the left, but not so much that it's ostentatious, and without sounding like it's writers are all ivory-tower Nobel prize winners (I'm talking to you, Krugman). As far as America's last surviving respectable major newspapers go, the Globe is a peach. Unfortunately, it happens to be a peach on a dying tree. read more

I have been getting the Globe since I first moved into the area back in 87. The Globe has a definite liberal slant but since I have a definite liberal slant too this has never bothered me. They do have some conservative columnists that offer a contrary opinion (Jeff Jacoby for example). They do have some delivery issues but since they provide full credit for missed papers, and even with a missed paper one still has the digital copy available, I don't have any issue with an occasional botched delivery. There are two versions of the digital Globe currently available, web access, and GlobeReader. I way prefer GlobeReader but GlobeReader is not available for Android. Not sure about iPad access. I am also concerned about the overall industry loss of investigative journalists so I would probably support the Globe even if I did not feel as good about them as I do. 4 stars. I have read through all the negative reviews and there appear to be two common criticisms. 1) Their customer service leaves a LOT to be desired. Yes it does. But in the end they provide full credit for missed issues AND free digital access I don't see any reason to complain. Customers can always pickup an occasional issue at the newsstand/gas-station if they have to have a copy. 2) They have a slight liberal bias. Every news outlet has a bias. Most people prefer seem to prefer a bias (based on what they do/buy rather than what they say). Extreme conservatives do not like the Globe. I get that. But reviewing the paper with one star is just an attempt to throw mud and they should instead stick with the Herald and Fox News. read more

Please listen to the reviewers and save yourself the upset that will surely ensue. The worst customer service anywhere. I could go into specifics but it is covered perfectly in the current reviews. It's good to know I'm not alone after calling on time and waiting for a promised paper that never arrives which requires another wait and call the next day to get the response of we will increase your subscription...they cannot redeliver the paper the next day! DO NOT SUBSCRIBE: IT IS A SCAM. 1. They told me I was charged $1 for the first eight weeks. 2. Charged me $27.99 before the end of seven weeks. Charged me again within 4 weeks (not even a month had passed) 3. By this time, I didn't live in the US anymore. But now that I lived abroad, I can only cancel my subscription on the phone (!!!). Have spent hours on the phone, which is a lot of time, effort and money for calling from abroad, only waiting to have someone talk to me. This is exploitative and exclusionary of those living abroad. It means they are creating barriers for those who live abroad (that is also racist in some ways, by the way). And frankly, the subscription terms are stupid: why do I have to CALL to cancel a DIGITAL-only subscription?? 4. Was told no refund is possible because the billing cycles were up. Which is ridiculous because THEY expedited the billing cycles. And I had spent so much time trying to reach them on the phone. 5. They tell me erroneously now that I could've cancelled on email or chat, which does NOT appear on the cancellation policy. They are now making it look like I could've acted faster and more efficiently. Horrendous customer service. So much for being a "progressive" newspaper. The Globe is a common scammer. read more

When I finally reached someone they said it takes two weeks to process the credit. Also, they were going to credit the upcoming month charge instead of the amount from the last time I called. I'm another furious Globe subscriber. No paper for 3 days. All methods we're supposed to be able to use to contact customer service are useless. No one is taking ownership of this issue; they're merely posting worthless fake "apologies" whining about how difficult it is for them to coordinate the change over of 600 drivers. Seriously? That's what businesses are supposed to DO when they make a change like this: manage the transition so that it is as seamless as possible for the end user. And stop using the word "delay" to describe what's going on. These are not delays; the papers are not being delivered at all! I don't know where they all are, but they aren't on our doorsteps. I'm very close to just cancelling my subscription after more than 25 years. Get it together, Globe! read more

I wouldn't suggest subscribing for home delivery unless you enjoy paying for something that is inconsistent and unreliable. If I could give the review a half a star If I could. With the Internet taking much of the way people get the news you would think that the Globe would strive to provide excellent service but unfortunately it seems like they could care less if a customer is upset or not. What's puzzles me is how the the delivery is so inconsistent but when they want to get paid the bills have no problem getting delivered or when the delivery person wants to be tipped around the holidays of course that paper with the self addressed envelope is of course delivered. I guess if I want the Sunday paper I'll have to fetch it myself & I suggest anyone thinking of home delivery to do the same. This is a total waste of time & money to get a home subscription! Take my advice...... You will be happy you did. FYI my neighbor tried to give it a shot A YEAR LATER .... and guess what??? THE SERVICE IS EVEN WORSE!! John Henry has ruined the Boston Globe. I have subscribed for nearly 40 years and since JH has owned the BG it has become second-rate. I went on vacation in August 2017 and stopped delivery of the paper for 11 days. My credit card, however, was charged my full monthly payment. I contacted the BG's customer service people and requested a credit for the 11 days the globe was not delivered. This is the answer I got: "The reason you were not credited for the 11-day vacation stop is based on our updated vacation policy. If your account is not stopped for twenty-two days you will not receive a credit for the stop. Thank you, Samantha, Boston Globe Customer Success team." Unbelievable.
