They have expanded in recent years gobbling up little weekly papers in outlying communities so they have become regional but have not lost their local touch. If you want local stories in Charlotte County, there are no other real choices. The other papers focus on either Sarasota or Ft. Myers with only passing references to Charlotte County. Their price is relatively reasonable and they offer daily delivery, or weekends, or just Sundays. You will end up paying $16 per month if you give them a credit card number for daily service. They have an excellent web presence for just about $5.00 and it allows you to read the paper in its original format online. This seems to make the most financial sense unless you are a coupon hunter. Unfortunately they offer very little in the way of coupons-not their fault, more the fault of the marketplace. As for content, they have a tendency to run a little too much wire service stories at times. They do have a decent stable of local reporters but I do notice some hesitancy to tackle significant stories probably because they are afraid of advertising backlash. But the news that does get printed is pretty good. If you version.need community calendars or an event schedule the Sun is the place to turn to. The editorials are always fun to read. In summary, The Sun has good news, a decent staff, and an overall good product. Save a tree and some money by getting their online version.

The Osprey Observer started publishing as a newsletter in 2001. The main focus was to cover community news and activities specifically in FishHawk Ranch. After the first month, residents started requesting more news from the surrounding community and we started to expand. We added the subdivision of FishHawk Trails, River Hills and Bloomingdale within the first four months and were printing more than 10,000 copies per month after only six months. Quickly we realized there could be unlimited growth to the paper and we had to strive to maintain a focus. What did we want to become? What continued to set us apart from the rest? The response is content. We are different because our stories cover the communities we are in. We wanted to maintain our reputation as a strong community newspaper despite our desire to grow. Our first goal was to identify 15,000 homes to include in the Bloomingdale/FishHawk edition and then to expand after 18 months into a completely new edition, Riverview. The Riverview edition started with eight pages and 10,000 homes and is now 36 pages delivered to 16,500 homes in Riverview and Apollo Beach.
