Wow. This is QUITE the store. If you love books, this is a must-visit. If you like books, this is a should-visit. Either way, prepare to get lost in the aisles and prepare to spend a LOT of time here. And I mean A LOT. I really liked how well organized this store is. For all its thousands of books, each section is clearly marked, with excellent signage. While I wandered, my kid read an entire Oliver Sachs book (it was a short memoir). I found some killer coffee table art books. One in particular was a stunner, and oh so big, with incredible color plates (it was on photorealism, and was an impressive tome). The inner flap showed it originally sold for $125. The price here was $50. So....not for nothing, despite being a used book. But substantially less than when it was new. FYI. There's a huge section on popular novels and classic literature, both softcover and hard cover. I am certain these are much more reasonably priced. From the banter I heard between the cashier and some customers, I gather that a lot of regular locals shop here, and they are very familiar with the employees. I like that feel, of a local shop where they know their neighbors. This is a mesmerizing store, and a place you can get lost in - in the best way imaginable! read more

This place is amazing; i am a book lover and can't recommend this place enough; the staff were beyond friendly and helpful and very knowledgeable on recommendations! I visited there just to browse and came out with three great books; they have vintage, current, history, sci fi, comics etc etc etc! it's a huge space and all full of great finds! if you can't find it there it probably doesn't exist lol! I will be back and appreciate great places like these still existing!! The place was neatly divided into sections and the assortment in each was spectacular!! highly recommend read more

Interesting store to look around if you have some time to kill. I have visited this store a couple times a year for the last decade and for the most part the staff are pleasant enough but some are quite rude and they are of little help when searching for eccentric subjects and titles. If you have the time it's worth a look but don't expect much help from the staff. read more

I kept hearing how big The Book Shop was. Some people told me it covered 5,000 square feet, others 6,000. But nobody mentioned how good a bookstore it was, so I really wasn't expecting much. Well, The Book Shop is a truly excellent secondhand bookstore, run by a true old-school bookstore man. The collection runs the gamut from popular fiction to psychology, history, cookery, and belles lettres, plus an extensive DVD rental service, but it contains a veritable mother lode of bookstore gold and the prices are generally very fair. This is the kind of bookstore I could easily spend hours in (as well as hundreds of dollars), and I'm pretty picky about my bookstores. Did I mention they're friendly? I think I only scratched the surface of this store. In my short visit, I could tell it was the type of used bookstore I could spend a lot of time and money in. (Especially since my husband, normally a puller-paster when it comes to me and used bookstores and shoe shops, loved this place too!) Fully stocked bookshelves to the ceiling go for as far as the eye can see. The aisles are narrow, the sections are organized well, with tables merchandising special items, yet it doesn't feel bursting at the seams either. It's infinitely browsable. And I found a bit of treasure: a copy of Daniel Clowes' Ghost World with the complete comic strip, plus shooting script and special features. I didn't make to the back wall, but another slow browse is on the agenda for my next Okanagan trip. read more

I'm actually worked in a similar shop and enjoyed every minute of it. The book shop is on Main Street and they seem to price their books similar to most used book shops either 50% of the cover price or 60% of the cover price I'm not too sure I didn't really look all that hard. There is a ton of books in the shop, so much that they have books stacked on the floor. The reason why I let some stars go here is because when you have volume this big your customers have a lot of issues finding things. Customers: DO NOT going to a bookstore like this if you want to find a specific book that you barely know the author of... Go in to book stores like this because you want to find something good to read... Unfortunately every time I go into the store I am with somebody who doesn't like spending more than a half hour in any given shop. So by the time I can even find a section that I'm interested in I have no time to look at the books. I've been in there a few times and still haven't bought a single book where as I've gotten books from Value Village as well as the malls bookstore. read more

I've shopped in bookstores across the country and this shop is truly one of the best. The fiction selection was particularly impressive. I found a number of books I was unable to find in either Calgary or Vancouver and at very good prices. I will absolutely return next time I am in Penticton. read more

As other reviews have said this bookstore has an amazing inventory. It's just too bad it's so disorganized, cluttered and jam-packed that it's challenging to move around in and impossible to find anything. Being that Penticton is such a small town I generally check here first if I'm looking for a book but I have often given up in frustration and just paid the new book price at Indigo or Amazon. read more
