Great atmosphere, however every time I've visited in the summer over the last 3 years it seems they've been understaffed. I don't really have the desire to wait 10 minutes to order a cold brew and another 10-15 minutes to actually get it. When it gets busy, the place becomes body-to-body in the café area, which may be some people's jam, but personally it isn't mine. I really wanted to buy a couple of books, but the line to order food and coffee is the same line used to purchase retail items, and I just couldn't bring myself to stand in it again. (I guess pick your books first and then stand in line to pay and get food/drinks?) I'll be back again... but will definitely make the trip earlier in the day... or come on a weekday. read more

The Book Nook is a fun place - very unique - they have everything from books and coffee (as the name suggests) to novelty items and wines. It's part cafe, part bookstore, part wine bar, and part entertainment venue. Most important thing is the coffee is good. To be fair the quaint book store is adorable and found some local lore books and a good kids section. The bakery items are decent. Then the show goes sideways, no it sinks quickly with no hopes of recovery after trying on my side. For the record, the musicians on Friday were entertaining and filled the evening with good tunes. Store does live music Thursday night thru Sunday night. Slept on this review to try to be kind, even the song last night told me to be kind. Waited in line and watch some Barista Ninja make coffee orders and then vanished on our turn. Let's be honest to customers, if you are not the coffee maker warn them!!! Ordered and then he grabbed a bakery item from the chilled case, he was done with me. Then looked at me and said "anything else?". Yep, sure is, he just took my order and forgot, .... was just waiting on my drinks. Then had to tell him what drinks, he then read from a printed off instruction sheet like it was a calculus quiz. On 2nd drink he literally pulled an ice cold cup from the pastry case, which from my view I hoped it came from under it. NOPE. He handed me drinks and as I walked my knuckles were chilled by the cup. Hopeful, I asked husband to tell me if his was hot. NOPE, so mine was a iceberg and pretty sure he royally messed it up as it now is my worst latte in my life (100% coffee could not ever be worse). Yes, worst. I walked back, he looked at me like I was lost, told him they are cold. He stood firm on looking at me with no apologies and I said again they are cold. Still, a look of what you want me to do lady. I put my finger in my drink and said these are cold, just microwave them. They were busy and felt that was fair. Think microwave setting on my chilled cup was 15 seconds. I took them to the table and one sip and blah, chilly and worse latte ever, pretty sure it was 80% milk and a splash of flavoring. So nicely thought out and decorated. A bookstore with a bar inside and a stage for performers. Also a Patio, and nicely thought out choices if books and gifts. Surprised to find this in Whitehall! The owners must be from NYC or something. Kudos to them for such a nice place read more

It was quiet and peaceful and it was hard not to spend my entire trip in here. I wish my town had a cute place like this. I had Mexican hot chocolate which was amazing. Bought a couple books that sounded very interesting. Absolutely loved the "local coffeehouse" vibe. They have indoor and outdoor searing and the most chill dog laying by the fireplace. You just want to grab a book and immerse yourself in the setting. I wish I lived down the street I would come very day. I hear someone plays piano around 10am - I think classical and the. I believe they have music a couple nights a week too. We will still be in town Friday night and if my daughter and Grandson would like to check it out we may go back. I know I will take my husband back. Unique and eclectic experience for breakfast/lunch! There was live music from grand piano, tables interspersed in a library feel book store and a cafe with quite a broad selection of food and drink. Love this place! I stopped in for the first time last week and was impressed with all of the options. It seems this is a real local gathering place and there was even a knitting group talking and making projects while I was there, which I thought was adorable. The server was very friendly and explained all of the menu options and gave me a calendar of upcoming events. I'm excited to go back for live music and trivia nights. This is the comfy Starbucks of the Montague crowd. I sat on their porch while my son perused the record shop across the street. We didn't eat, but purchased 2 Montague Sesquicentennial coffee mugs as souvenirs. At the Nook, cell phones work, the AC is perfect and customers are happy to escape the campground. Find it and you've found one of the coolest places in Montague. I wouldn't recommend coming here unless you plan on making a purchase. I came to do some graphics work on my iPad and computer. This was probably my 3rd day in a row coming to have a place to quietly work without interruptions at home. While sitting there, the employee/owner (not sure which one it was) came up and said that "we require a 1 drink minimum to use the WiFi", I politely told him "I'm not using the WiFi." (My iPad has cellular data, and I wasn't even using the internet. I was using photoshop and illustrator to do my graphics work) He then storms off upset and says for everyone in the shop to hear, "You can't just come in here every day and NOT buy something!" I stood up and said, "No worries.", then gathered my things and left. I'm dumb founded. I'm sure they were having a bad day and things have been tough with the whole COVID -19 lockdown. Now that they're re-open for business things can be stressful...I completely understand that. However, if you require a purchase for someone to come into your store, then put a sign on the front door saying, "DON'T COME IN unless you agree to make at least 1 purchase!", with a little waiver, where people who want to come in, can sign an agreement! Love the atmosphere in here and the music nights are great here . I like to come here for the music and wine . They don't have a lot of books to choose from . It's a small area . Food is ok at best and a lot of times the service is not good ! I called one time asking if they had a particular book .., he put me on hold and never came back!! I called back and they never answered again I don't frequent the place too often ... this could really be a great place if more effort was put into it . I come here once a year while on vacation. The atmosphere is great, and sometimes there is live music. Very cozy. However the specialty coffees are terrible. Last year I got a terrible cappuccino and thought maybe it was just a fluke. This year I ordered a latte - also terrible. Grayish colored and tastes of old coffee grounds. I'll still come for the books and atmosphere, but won't try the coffee again. read more

I'm not against this place. In fact, I'm so in favor of local bookstores that I skipped ordering a couple books from my hometown bookstore in order to support this place. I tried calling them and spoke to someone who said they'd call me back. Never happened. So I tried their website, which has a form for ordering books. Never heard back. I went in person once I got in town and left a note with an employee with three different ways to contact me. No response. My conclusion is that they don't want a new customer and/or don't want to sell books. Certainly customer service was nil in my experience. read more

Taste of the big city in this little town...you should check out all the goings on. Great snacks and food...better each time I stop by. Music is delightful and free wi-fi with comfy chairs. This shop sits right next to my wife's salon and we went in there for coffee this morning. We decided to also order food off of their extensive menu of things. We both got paninis: mine was ham and hers was bacon. After waiting over 20 minutes for them, they showed up and were nothing more than sandwiches on whole grain bread that had been tossed into a toaster with a deli slice of ham and a smashed, cold egg... thrown on top of a slice of grapefruit. Their advertised fruit salad was a piece of grapefruit. My wife's chai tea came out tasting funny and with an over abundance of cinnamon on top. My iced mocha was the only thing that was relatively normal and decent. What makes this place attractive is its pianist and the large book selection it has. That's the only reason it got more than one star. It's charming, but the coffee and food leave everything to be desired. read more

O M G. The background music that I deemed was some classical C.D. they had on the overhead sound system started sounding too good to be true. The order counter was at the back of the store and as I was waiting for my coffee from the pleasant barista I was getting an inkling, whilst beginning to listen, that someone was most likely on the keys in store. I turn around to their stage, at the front of the store when low and behold there was this youthful man playing some beautiful piece on the baby grand. Such an awesome experience.
