To be fair the quaint book store is adorable and found some local lore books and a good kids section. The bakery items are decent. Then the show goes sideways, no it sinks quickly with no hopes of recovery after trying on my side. For the record, the musicians on Friday were entertaining and filled the evening with good tunes. Store does live music Thursday night thru Sunday night. Slept on this review to try to be kind, even the song last night told me to be kind. Waited in line and watch some Barista Ninja make coffee orders and then vanished on our turn. Let's be honest to customers, if you are not the coffee maker warn them!!! Ordered and then he grabbed a bakery item from the chilled case, he was done with me. Then looked at me and said "anything else?". Yep, sure is, he just took my order and forgot, .... was just waiting on my drinks. Then had to tell him what drinks, he then read from a printed off instruction sheet like it was a calculus quiz. On 2nd drink he literally pulled an ice cold cup from the pastry case, which from my view I hoped it came from under it. NOPE. He handed me drinks and as I walked my knuckles were chilled by the cup. Hopeful, I asked husband to tell me if his was hot. NOPE, so mine was a iceberg and pretty sure he royally messed it up as it now is my worst latte in my life (100% coffee could not ever be worse). Yes, worst. I walked back, he looked at me like I was lost, told him they are cold. He stood firm on looking at me with no apologies and I said again they are cold. Still, a look of what you want me to do lady. I put my finger in my drink and said these are cold, just microwave them. They were busy and felt that was fair. Think microwave setting on my chilled cup was 15 seconds. I took them to the table and one sip and blah, chilly and worse latte ever, pretty sure it was 80% milk and a splash of flavoring. The tall male faux barista should be banned from the coffee area. *believe your customer *if you can't make something - don't *coffee cups should not be kept chilled *apologize when you get it wrong read more

Great atmosphere, however every time I've visited in the summer over the last 3 years it seems they've been understaffed. I don't really have the desire to wait 10 minutes to order a cold brew and another 10-15 minutes to actually get it. When it gets busy, the place becomes body-to-body in the café area, which may be some people's jam, but personally it isn't mine. I really wanted to buy a couple of books, but the line to order food and coffee is the same line used to purchase retail items, and I just couldn't bring myself to stand in it again. (I guess pick your books first and then stand in line to pay and get food/drinks?) I'll be back again... but will definitely make the trip earlier in the day... or come on a weekday. read more

Quirky little place with a decent selection of books and games. Half of the place is bookstore and half is tables and chairs. There's an espresso bar, full alcoholic bar, and a piano for live music. Felt like it was just one too many things, and it hard to pinpoint the specialty of the place. read more

So nicely thought out and decorated. A bookstore with a bar inside and a stage for performers. Also a Patio, and nicely thought out choices if books and gifts. Surprised to find this in Whitehall! The owners must be from NYC or something. Kudos to them for such a nice place read more

The Book Nook is a fun place - very unique - they have everything from books and coffee (as the name suggests) to novelty items and wines. It's part cafe, part bookstore, part wine bar, and part entertainment venue. Most important thing is the coffee is good. It seems like every other time I try to go they are closed, but other than that I recommend it. (To be fair, I usually only come through white lake area at odd times!) read more

This place is so cute! The coffee was great, I enjoyed my simple vanilla latte with almondmilk, and loved browsing the bookstore. It was quiet and peaceful and it was hard not to spend my entire trip in here. I wish my town had a cute place like this. Food was ok, service was fine, nothing above and beyond, but the atmosphere and coffee were excellent! read more

Tried to get a cup of coffee, but waited in line for about 10 minutes, thinking something was wrong with the machine, then to find out the employees were just counting their tips. Left with no coffee. Cute place though. Smells like books read more

Love this place! Stayed at the Double JJ Resort and took my girls here. Good variety of books, delicious coffee drinks, great live music. We will come again! Great vibe! read more

Great concept- who doesn't love a cozy bookstore with good coffee and pie ?Will definitely return

Small place, but a really well-thought-out selection of interesting books ... and a wine bar with food, too!

The prices are too high for what you get. Our bill for two coffees and two pulled pork sandwiches and chips was $24.00. The outside doorway had some leaves pilled up in front of the door. The atomosphere is great. read more

The book nook has been a personal favorite since I was in middle school. My friends and I used to ride our bikes here every weekend and get smoothies, cookies, or food. Great food, and a quiet calm atmosphere. read more

I had Mexican hot chocolate which was amazing. Bought a couple books that sounded very interesting. Absolutely loved the "local coffeehouse" vibe. They have indoor and outdoor searing and the most chill dog laying by the fireplace. You just want to grab a book and immerse yourself in the setting. I wish I lived down the street I would come very day. I hear someone plays piano around 10am - I think classical and the. I believe they have music a couple nights a week too. We will still be in town Friday night and if my daughter and Grandson would like to check it out we may go back. I know I will take my husband back. I have been traveling across the USA and these are places that remain in your heart. Places that feel "homey" and inviting. This is a special spot and one that covers that niche read more

Love this place! I stopped in for the first time last week and was impressed with all of the options. It seems this is a real local gathering place and there was even a knitting group talking and making projects while I was there, which I thought was adorable. The server was very friendly and explained all of the menu options and gave me a calendar of upcoming events. I'm excited to go back for live music and trivia nights. I had an amazing chai latte and enjoyed browsing all the book and gift items. read more

Great bookstore and coffee shop. Great selection of books, great coffee and lots of fun T-shirt's and games that would make great gifts. Only wish we'd known about this place sooner! read more

Unique and eclectic experience for breakfast/lunch! There was live music from grand piano, tables interspersed in a library feel book store and a cafe with quite a broad selection of food and drink. They're dog friendly. The food was delicious. The latte was made way too sweet but could easily be ordered differently. Overall I would definitely recommend read more

Really cool place. Great bar with live music often and open mik nights once a month...

After recently making my move to Montague Michigan, this was the first stop at exploring the town. The Book Nook, was welcoming, kind, and I shared genuine laughs with the staff. Being able to work remote, I am excited that I have made the Book Nook my choice of all things coffee, and breakfast. Not only do they carry are wide variety books for all ages, they are simply the coolest group around. They also have evening events, such as Jazz nights where you can enjoy a nice glass of wine and shareable plate for relaxing night. read more

super cute and decorated very fun inside! my chai was meh but the girl working was very nice :)

Love the book nook. As a local, there aren't many coffee shops to choose from in the area. But the book nook never fails to have a friendly, clean atmosphere that I always want to keep coming back to. A great place to do homework and even have a bite to eat. Friendly place, and nice live music weekly! read more

This is the comfy Starbucks of the Montague crowd. I sat on their porch while my son perused the record shop across the street. We didn't eat, but purchased 2 Montague Sesquicentennial coffee mugs as souvenirs. At the Nook, cell phones work, the AC is perfect and customers are happy to escape the campground. Find it and you've found one of the coolest places in Montague. (I'm a child of the 1970s, and I'm 54, but it's a great to take your hipster or millennial kids) I love live music, but prefer classical to the silent-movie type tunes favorited by the piano player. read more

I wouldn't recommend coming here unless you plan on making a purchase. I came to do some graphics work on my iPad and computer. This was probably my 3rd day in a row coming to have a place to quietly work without interruptions at home. While sitting there, the employee/owner (not sure which one it was) came up and said that "we require a 1 drink minimum to use the WiFi", I politely told him "I'm not using the WiFi." (My iPad has cellular data, and I wasn't even using the internet. I was using photoshop and illustrator to do my graphics work) He then storms off upset and says for everyone in the shop to hear, "You can't just come in here every day and NOT buy something!" I stood up and said, "No worries.", then gathered my things and left. I'm dumb founded. I'm sure they were having a bad day and things have been tough with the whole COVID -19 lockdown. Now that they're re-open for business things can be stressful...I completely understand that. However, if you require a purchase for someone to come into your store, then put a sign on the front door saying, "DON'T COME IN unless you agree to make at least 1 purchase!", with a little waiver, where people who want to come in, can sign an agreement! How absurd!!! Needless to say they have lost a future customer. read more

Love the atmosphere in here and the music nights are great here . I like to come here for the music and wine . They don't have a lot of books to choose from . It's a small area . Food is ok at best and a lot of times the service is not good ! I called one time asking if they had a particular book .., he put me on hold and never came back!! I called back and they never answered again I don't frequent the place too often ... this could really be a great place if more effort was put into it . They do have a lot of coffee to choose from and tea. Some bakery items as well . read more

I have patronized the book for over 15 years. It is a great place to meet friends, enjoy playing music in open mic. and the selection of books continues to grow. The food there is great as well. I look forward to their re-opening. They are a definite part of our community. read more

I approve of this place! It's a simple combination of coffee and books. It also appears to double as a jazz bar? It is cozy and has a quiet atmosphere. The woman who took my order was in the back baking cookies when I came to the counter. Very cozy place and perfect for a coffee date. read more

The Book Nook & Java Shop - I think if you can imagine it, you can order it here! - Bookstores Near Me - Montague, Michigan

I come here once a year while on vacation. The atmosphere is great, and sometimes there is live music. Very cozy. However the specialty coffees are terrible. Last year I got a terrible cappuccino and thought maybe it was just a fluke. This year I ordered a latte - also terrible. Grayish colored and tastes of old coffee grounds. I'll still come for the books and atmosphere, but won't try the coffee again. read more

This place is amazing. I was here for a special event, but the concept of this place is mind-blowing. A bookstore, a coffee shop, a full bar, and a jazz club? What? Who could ask for anything more? I don't live in Montague, which is a good thing, because if I did, I'd spend all my time at this place. read more

I'm not against this place. In fact, I'm so in favor of local bookstores that I skipped ordering a couple books from my hometown bookstore in order to support this place. I tried calling them and spoke to someone who said they'd call me back. Never happened. So I tried their website, which has a form for ordering books. Never heard back. I went in person once I got in town and left a note with an employee with three different ways to contact me. No response. My conclusion is that they don't want a new customer and/or don't want to sell books. Certainly customer service was nil in my experience. read more

A cozy place to enjoy a coffee and a book. My wife loves this place, very friendly staff, and the food and drinks are great! Get the Wildcat, it's the best peppermint mocha you will ever have! I never wanted to leave. If you were to ask me, this is my ideal coffee shop. Rows of books and good coffee. My husband and I stopped in from out of town, and being coffee enthusiasts, we were happy to learn of this coffee shop in such a small town. What a comfortable place to relax on a Saturday morning. It has nice local vibes in a big shop. I just love it. If Book Nook & Java ever considers expanding, please come to Chicago! read more

This shop sits right next to my wife's salon and we went in there for coffee this morning. We decided to also order food off of their extensive menu of things. We both got paninis: mine was ham and hers was bacon. After waiting over 20 minutes for them, they showed up and were nothing more than sandwiches on whole grain bread that had been tossed into a toaster with a deli slice of ham and a smashed, cold egg... thrown on top of a slice of grapefruit. Their advertised fruit salad was a piece of grapefruit. My wife's chai tea came out tasting funny and with an over abundance of cinnamon on top. My iced mocha was the only thing that was relatively normal and decent. What makes this place attractive is its pianist and the large book selection it has. That's the only reason it got more than one star. It's charming, but the coffee and food leave everything to be desired. read more

O M G. The background music that I deemed was some classical C.D. they had on the overhead sound system started sounding too good to be true. The order counter was at the back of the store and as I was waiting for my coffee from the pleasant barista I was getting an inkling, whilst beginning to listen, that someone was most likely on the keys in store. I turn around to their stage, at the front of the store when low and behold there was this youthful man playing some beautiful piece on the baby grand. Such an awesome experience. Totally gave him a few dollars too for the afternoon entertainment. Also, the sailor sludge coffee is my fave there. Nicest workers you have to serve you there read more
