Probably the worst thing about this location is the parking lot. Once you are are past that though the staff we were greeted by were friendly. I came here looking for music from the 70's-80's and was sorely disappointed. You'd maybe find one CD from a band and it would be a greatest hits compilation. They didn't even have Queen or The Rolling Stones so do with that what you will. Mostly just 2000's and up pop which would be great for people who enjoy that genre. Most of the CDs they had were not marked with a price tag so you'll be in for a surprise when you're getting checked out. I am sure there are things here for other people but unfortunately I am not one of them. read more

Like a recycling place for books, DVDs, Blue Ray, CDs even records! Everything in the store is at least 50% off retail. They have everything organized and it's not stuffy like a thrift store can be. There is no way to search for a book in their inventory without looking at the shelves but if you ask they can usually take you to where it would be. Best part about the store is you can bring in your used stuff, they will sort out what they can sell and give you store credit for it. Whatever they can not sell they give you the option to take it back or they will donate it for you. read more

The gentleman at the register was not "inviting" at all. I asked if they carried vinyl records. He said yes and pointed. I asked if any were new. He seemed irritated and disclosed that they were not new. I asked if they graded their used vinyl. Even more irritated, he again answered "no" with a disgusted look that said to me - "why would you ask such a stupid question?" Any reputable used record store I've dealt with, provides a vinyl grading on the sticker so a buyer can decide if they want to consider looking further into the record. Bottom line - an unwelcoming atmosphere. read more

What a great place to look for media, they have a large selection of books and DVD's as well as comics and other media. The staff there are VERY friendly and helpfull when it comes to finding a specific title. They give great credit for trade ins and dont ask an arm and a leg for their used merch. Well, honestly I just came here for the books and for the 1 aisles I walked down halfway down and the front shelf of Good Reads recommendations I found two books to take home. All the books are 1/2 off the cover price which isnt too shabby. Definitely an adventure in there!!! read more

Huge business. Takes up two storefronts. Contains used and new books of every ilk in addition to comics, CDs, DVDs and VHS tapes. I like the many soft chairs available for an old guy like me to make himself comfortable. Staff was friendly and helpful. I walked away empty handed, but my wife found an armful of books for herself and to read to our grandchild. I believe it also has a buyback program if the sticker remains on the item. read more

A homeless person did ask me for a dollar when we left, but that does not detract from the lost art of slanging used books! I love reading and I definitely love getting hardcovers on the cheap. I brought in 3 soft cover Ann Rice novels that I refuse to touch after slogging through interview with a vampire. I've never read so many useless sentences peppered with fancy words. They gave me $4 for 2 of the books and I told them to keep the third. Ended up getting a book I wanted for super cheap. Used book stores are a needed accommodation in cities these days. We need to look up from our iPads and actually dive into another world with our imaginations once in a while. Loved this place, wish we had a large used bookstore like this in every city. read more

LOVE THIS PLACE! As a book lover, I am obsessed with bookstores of all sorts and The Book Exchange is great! To be honest, I do not like paying full price for books so this is an amazing trade off! Every few months, I gather up all the books I've already read and go through my shelves to find some others to trade then take them in! They give you credit for what they want with the option to donate the rest to their charity sale which I'm a big fan of! I then take the money from my trades and buy others that I have on my to-read list! Trading and buying is like going to the library but even better because there are no due dates or fines! The Book Exchange also has a wide variety of not only books but records, yes, actual records, movies (dvds, blu-ray), cds and more! They have a huge children's books section and their stock is always changing! I highly recommend you visit and visit often to take advantage of their ever-changing stock of old and new books of all kinds! read more

This is a very cool little new and used book store. Unlike a lot of places around this part of town the owners have put a great deal of work into the interior of their store. In fact you're going to feel like you're stepping into a little bistro down in Ghent once you walk in the door. Their trade in policy is fair and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. There's plenty of parking as well. If you're a avid reader you'll want to check them out. read more

My husband started frequenting this charming used bookstore when he lived in the Ward's Corner area. Now that we've moved to another part of the city, we don't make it up here as often now. As is the case with all used bookstores, the selection varies greatly each time you go in, and it's fun to discover new treats on each visit. It always seems to be sunny when we are up that direction, and the front of the shop can get pretty toasty with the sun streaming in, but it makes it feel cozy and welcoming. They do accept books, movies, and music for credit, and for things that they can't take to sell, they can usually put into their charity sale, which is a sale to benefit a charity that changes over time. They advertise when they'll be hosting the sales on their Facebook page, so you should Like them if you're interested in knowing when those sales happen. It's very inexpensive (50 cents for a paperback, $1 for hardcovers, $7 for a shopping bag full, I think), and all of the proceeds go to good causes. There are lots of different genres available, from fiction to old yearbooks! I do wish they had more segmentation in the Fiction section. They do pull out the mysteries into their own section, as well as sci-fi/fantasy, which is helpful, but there are so many other ways to segment fiction books these days that I hardly want to wade through the whole section to find the types of books I enjoy in that broad genre. A note to anyone who has store credit there: they are changing their system. Instead of maintaining a record of your credit in the store, they are transitioning to a card that you must bring with you. If you go over a year without visiting the store, the credit on your card will expire. I assume at some point, they will consider all of the credit left at the store expired as well, so I would recommend stopping in and getting up to date if you have credit here. Overall, nice place, but a little out of the way for me anymore. read more

Came here to see if they could look at an old book that I had and see if it was worth anything. They were very friendly and told me that they couldn't really price a signed and dedicated book of that age. The employee then recommended another book seller out in Ocean View, Virginia Beach. The store was clean, very large, friendly employees, and plenty of parking in Wards corner. Even though they couldn't help me with what I needed, they provided a good first impression and I could be back in the future if needed. read more

This is a decent little bookstore. I assume it's a Mom & Pop place since I've never heard of it before. I only exchanged money for books so I can't comment on their buying. As for their their selling, all books are priced at 50% of their original value. So for some new books that start at 24.99 that may not be that great a deal. For older books it usually is a good deal. As for selection this is a lot smaller than a Half Price Books. The aisles are narrow to navigate. They have movies as well but no board games. read more

I decided to visit this store for the first time during my lunch break about a week ago. I walked in, the staff just looked at me, didn't speak or offer assistance. I briefly perused their lackluster aisles of overpriced used books, which was severely lacking in genre diversity. Briefly looked at their DVD collection and exited the store without purchasing anything. A trip to the bookstore always brightens my day, but first impressions are everything. You're better off stopping by Goodwill or Salvation Army for good books and prices. read more

They had a great Yelp $10 for $20 deal. The girl was helpful when I needed to find a book title. Books were all half off from the price on the book so it was already a great deal. Support local book shops instead of big retail companies. They win with your business and you save $$ as well! Will definitely go back again! read more

All Vinyl is the same price... 5$ each / 3 for 12$ and 99.5% of what they have are $1.00 thrift store records. The way they price vinyl, NO one will knowingly sell good records to them. DVD's and CD's are also the same price (you can pick this stuff up for 1-2$ anywhere these days). The only reason I went is to get rid of books I don't need anymore. They only give store credit not cash, so you can trade in your books, music or movies and then spend and hour looking through other over priced media. I'm surprised they can pay the rent on that big space. read more

I am getting ready to move up North and today was my last time visiting the Book Exchange. Over the past three years I have enjoyed exchanging my books and movies there and have always had a wonderful experience. However, today as I was purchasing the book, Going Home, Jesus and Buddha As Brothers by Thich Nhat Hanh, the person working at the register picked it up and turned to another employee and asked incredulously, "Hey, have you seen this? Jesus and Buddha as BROTHERS." The other employee scoffed and shook his head. I felt like they were criticizing me for purchasing this book. I felt like they thought I was less than them because I was purchasing a book that THEY were selling. It's as if I went to a restaurant and ordered something on the menu but was ridiculed by the server. They were obviously both Christians because that was the only type of music that was playing in the store during this visit. I didn't mind because it's their business but I felt like I was being persecuted for purchasing something that went against their religious views. Before I had arrived I had prepared on express my appreciation for their business and how it has served my needs over these past three years but I skipped it. I just mentioned I was moving to Chicago and the guy said there should be lots of bookstores up there. DUH. But I bet there isn't ONE that would make fun of me for a purchase I made; at least not right in front of me. read more

I came here because I am a book hoarder. After realizing that I still have boxes of books I never unpacked when I moved a year ago. So...to The Book Exchange I went. Very cool place. I gave the man at the desk my bin of books and was able to wander around the aisles (my happy place) until he was ready to give me my total. They don't really take hardback books, FYI and wouldn't you know most of the credit I got from my books, I spent on more cool books. *sigh* At least now I know where to go when I'm ready to clean out my books again. read more

Incredible place. I was so sad when I found out the closest Half-Price Books was 5 hours away, but I think The Book Exchange is even better! They've expanded so there is a book section and an audio/video section. They've also renovated the outside (hooray for renewing Ward's Corner) and it looks much cleaner now. The staff is always friendly and helpful and they in addition to the 50% off everything, they give deals through LivingSocial, Yelp, and Facebook. I love their charity book sales also. read more

Nice place to clean out your bookshelf to get some store credit and buy different books! They also have DVDs, CDs, & records (if I remember correctly). When you take books to "trade in" they give you a little card with your balance which can be easy to loose, so keep it in a safe spot. Even if your not trading books it's a nice place to stop in and browse. All books are sold at half price of the original book price. So for older books it's probably a good deal, some of the newer books it may not be. They also do charity sales so check their Facebook page from time to time. read more

The first bookstores that we stopped at you had to have an appointment and call days ahead to have your books looked at for exchange. The store is well-kept, and it's very inviting. The music was great, and I enjoyed browsing the bookshelves while listening to it. The staff is helpful and welcomed us into the store. There were a lot of interesting titles. The books are sorted by genre and audience. I was surprised to see DVDs there also, and the DVD selection was wide. There are fun seats and corners around the shop for people to sit and read if they're interested. I would go back for sure. They only reason why I gave this store 4 stars and not five is because for some books the prices were marked really high, especially when the book has markings on it from the previous owner. But, overall, it's a great place to shop at. read more

This is my favorite locally-owned business in Hampton Roads. It's clean, quiet, well-stocked, and a good member of the community--they have charity drives about once a month.
