Stayed at the Blackwell for 4 nights - only because it was the host hotel for the conference I was attending. Location is great and it's cute - but the staff is NOT friendly at all. They were all young, I am assuming college students maybe?? However, they clearly missed the class on customer service. The floor in my room was dirty - like someone walked around with mud on their shoes and I had trouble getting the TV to work. I called the front desk twice and they did not have any suggestions. Dining options are pretty limited however, what I did eat was good, so that's a plus. Overall, would not recommend - I would certainly not stay there again. Oh - one more thing ... the walls are VERY thin and I could hear every time someone around me flushed the toilet .. and lots of doors slamming 24/7. read more

Tonight I'm spending the night at the Blackwell Inn and my experience has been so awful! I would give this hotel zero stars if I could. I have stayed here in the past and had a lovely time. The restaurant was open the mini bar was stocked. None of this is true tonight. No room service, crummy sandwiches in the lobby. The room has coffee and that is it! If you stay here make sure you bring you own snacks/drinks, whatever. The valet parking is working-thank goodness. We will see what happens in the morning. I have my fingers crossed. If I had known how far this hotel had fallen I would never have booked. I have had better service at the Red Roof Inn for a lot less money. read more

We came for a concert in Columbus and had a nice stay at the Blackwell Inn. It is on OSU's campus, and we picked this hotel so we could walk to the concert. When we arrived, there was a slight delay for checking in, and we were offered a free upgrade to a suite due to our wait which was awesome. The room was clean and nice and the staff was friendly. I checked into the Blackwell on a business trip a few months back. First impression was pleasant. The front desk is staffed with OSU's students. Despite their young age, all were extremely professional in their attire, workmanship and care in handling our check in. Due to unfortunate circumstances, our luggage was delayed and the airport shipped it around midnight. We arranged for the luggage to be received and held by front desk until next morning. All was carefully handled by the staff. Also note that this hotel offers the following: -clean comfortable pillowtop matresses and pillows -high end toiletries -spacious desks -mini-fridge -good quality coffee and tea -spacious bathrooms -kickass breakfast!! GREAT Hotel. HORRIBLE Accountant. The hotel is clean and decent, with a friendly and helpful staff... until your info gets into the Accounting Dept. Due to a family emergency I had to check out 1 day early. I contacted American Express (where I booked the hotel through). They advised that I contact the hotel and ask if they'd allow me to check out one day early. The hotel said it would be no problem and that they'd refund me my last night's stay. Apparently, after I checked out, instead of refunding me for one night, they charged me for one additional night. No problem, easy fix. So I thought... I contacted their Accounting dept and spoke with Nicole Smith. Ms. Smith explained that while I was over-charged, that they had refunded me. I explained to her there was no refund for the over-charge and no refund for the last night either. I was still owed the over charge, plus the one night's refund. She disagreed. Instead she stated that their records indicate I was refunded for the last night. Long story short, Amex had to call them. However, apparently when Amex called her, she apparently told them that indeed they had NOT refunded me, and that she would proceed and refund me the money I was owed. She also told Amex that I was also owed for the last night that she had never refunded me for. She never ever bothered to call me back, or tell me anything. Until I called her again and asked for a letter stating that she IS refunding me (just so I have a letter in case something happens). She wrote a letter full of lies, and false information. I was SHOCKED. I the hotel's GM and explained how Nicole chose to handle a situation. Ms Smith has no concept of how to conduct business in a fair and respectful manner. Truly, a terrible way to treat a first-time (and last time) customer. Not once did she apologize for her mistakes. Her poor choice of actions has further guaranteed that I would never ever stay at a property where the Accounting office doesn't refund your money, and instead over-charges you until you get the credit card company involved. Thank You American Express for saving me from people like Nicole Smith. read more

I was booked at the Blackwell Inn by my assistant (note to self - no bonus for her) for my weekend business trip to Columbus. Maybe I'm spoiled from traveling so much, but there are certain things I expect when I stay at a hotel that I didn't get from my stay at the Blackwell. It did seem as if the staff that had the most interaction with the patrons (doormen, front desk) were teenagers so maybe that's why the professionalism I'm accustomed to when staying at a hotel wasn't there. Who knows. Strike 1: when my colleagues and I arrived via taxi the doorman did not greet us and help us with our bags. He did however hit the handicap button so the doors would open for us. I guess we should be grateful for that act of kindness. Strike 2: check-in time is 3pm, I checked-in at 3:23pm, and was informed that my room was ready, but showing as dirty. I was asked if I wanted a different room or wanted to wait. Now, I don't know why I needed to be informed that my room was showing as dirty. All the young man who was checking me in had to do was say, "Sir, the room we had for you isn't available so I'll put you in a different room." Or he didn't have to say anything to me at all and could have just switched me to a new room. I would have never known. When I went pass the check-in desk about an hour later I heard the employee giving the same "dirty room" message to a couple checking-in and the look on the lady's face was priceless. Strike 3: When checking-in we were never informed of the services the hotel offered (i.e a free car service that you could book for drop-offs and pick-ups) or where the restaurant and gym were located. We spent about $30 on taxis before we found out we could have been requested the hotel car take us where we needed to go....I'm glad I can expense the taxi fees otherwise I would be one angry Yelper. While I focused on the negatives with my stay at the Blackwell Inn, I do want to recognize the positives i experienced. 1) My king size room was indeed spacious and the bed was extremely comfortable. 2) The breakfast at the hotel restaurant was delicious. The buffet had a good selection to choose from and even had a made to order omelette station. 3) The staff working in the restaurant was on top of their game providing excellent service. read more

(Side note to other reviews I've seen): While true that 90% of the staff we saw were 18-24 year old college students, all of them were pleasant and attentive. This is a very convenient hotel to host meetings and conferences near The Ohio State University. I've stayed in the rooms as well as hosted visitors to the hotel and it is a very nice university hotels. It is also a great place to have meetings. They have several conference rooms that get booked well in advance, but they are great for workshops, project review meetings, or larger conferences. The also have an excellent selection of menu items for breakfast, lunch, and dinner to be served at such meetings at fair prices. I've rarely been disappointed by either the service or the quality of the rooms at the Blackwell. I highly recommend it. read more

Guess posting on Yelp is appropriate considering Sean and Stephanie came to my assistance when I showed back up to the property "yelping" with skinned knees and hands after my "victory lap" and resulting tumble from a scooter following college drop-off for my daughter. What a hospitable duo they were during our stay. Very kind, engaging, professional, knowledgeable and friendly, The location of this special property is ideal. Steps were taken to ensure cleanliness which is so important especially during this time. We couldn't have asked for a better stay. We also found the dinner and service in the little hotel bar to be perfect for the quick bite to eat after a busy day of moving. I loved my tasty sandwich! Stephanie and Sean absolutely enhanced our entire experience with their kindness. This is definitely my hotel of choice when visiting my daughter at college. Next time, I might just stay off the scooters, but at least I know Sean and Stephanie will readily whip out a first aid kit and a heavy dose of compassion should I find myself on the pavement. read more

Very clean and comfortable room. I'm on the forth floor and have a beautiful view of the horseshoe stadium! There is free internet, and a nice bar and restaurant walking distance from all of OSU! This would be a great place for family visiting students or future students wanting to visit and see the the campus, so they are close to everything. read more

The hotel staff (all college students) was very welcoming and I felt at ease using the valet service (it was validated by the event, I would normally never let anyone drive my car but parking has changed quite a bit since I was last on campus). The family and I just returned from a weekend in Columbus. We stayed at The Blackwell for 2 nights, and enjoyed our visit immensely. The hotel is very warm and inviting; the rooms are large, clean, and well-appointed. We stayed on the third floor, which was really quiet - the only neighborly noise we heard was the odd toilet flush or shower turning on. There are a LOT of TV channels - way better variety than I've experienced elsewhere. The location is also phenomenal; we did visited a few different areas of Columbus, and were never more than a 10 minute drive from any of them. Tips for you: + Join the hotel's loyalty program and make your reservations through that site (www.iPrefer.com) to score better rates and some freebies. On this visit, we booked for about $20 less than rack rate, received vouchers for breakfast in Bistro 2110 (which I'll review separately, so as not to mar the hotel's rating), and were comped wireless Internet access. + If you will have a car at the hotel - consider parking on your own at the Lane Avenue garage right next door to the hotel ($7/day during the week; $3/day on the weekends). The hotel charges $15/day for valet, and they're parking your car in that same garage. The only way it wouldn't be more economical to park on your own is if you will need multiple in/out privileges; you have to pay each time you leave the garage. Overall a great hotel that you should have few, if any, qualms about booking. We'll definitely stay at The Blackwell again. read more

This hotel is all about excellence. I stayed here for three nights as I was visiting the school for an interview, and also because it was the hotel the school recommended me to stay at. I am truly impressed with everything about this hotel. The airport shuttle service was convenient (be sure to call in to reserve a spot), and the shuttle driver was an undergraduate student at OSU so I had the opportunity to hear about the school and the area from his perspective. Checking in was a breeze and the staff was very friendly in handling the matters. Since I had the room to myself, it was especially spacious and very clean. The business style desks were nice and the leather chairs complemented them pretty well. What surprised me most was when the hotel staff came by my room at night around 8:30 and offered me ice, chocolate, and a card with weather info for the next day. I was quite impressed by this and I could tell that the hotel accommodates their guests very well. For nights when you're not around, the staff tidies up your room again, which I also thought was very considerate of them (as if making the room during the day wasn't enough). The bathrooms throughout the hotel were very clean. They have hand towels for you to use if paper towels aren't enough for you. The business center was open 24 hours (as long as you have your key card on you), so if there are any Internet or printing matters that needs to be taken cared of you can get it done there. Overall, I enjoyed my stay at the Blackwell. I highly recommend it for those visiting the school or even if you're just visiting Columbus. I will definitely stay here again if I ever come by Columbus again. read more

Ooooooowah. Super fancy. I loved the his & hers desks across from the separate beds. It was totally convenient, and really spacious and well designed. There's like 7 HBO channels but we couldn't find anything good to watch. TV today, honestly. If I could find anything negative to say, it would be that the staff was almost....like, TOO helpful and accommodating. Like, they came to our room around 8:30pm with ice and chocolate. Those silly helpful guest services people! And they held the door open nearly every time I entered or left the front door. And the beds were sooooo comfy. The Blackwell Inn and Conference Center is simply terrific. This moderately priced hotel is surprisingly modern. If you pay for the car valet service, you can text the valet and they'll shoot you a reply indicating when your car is out front. As a regular traveler, this is the first I've seen of this type of service. Naturally, this is The Ohio State University's hotel so it is full of OSU pride. However, the pride isn't obnoxious the way it could be elsewhere. Instead, desk and other staff turn that pride into striving to provide the best and friendliest service possible. Honestly, it's the sort of thing you wish for from all service-oriented establishments these days, yet hardly find in big name hotel chains... Additionally, the hotel room was spacious, modern and comfortable. The closet and desk space areas are better than average. Outstanding. read more

Super thin walls and doors. I felt like I was in the neighbor's room. I also overheard all the conversations that happened outside of my room. There might have been a party, so I could hear the music and the drums. The vent also delighted me with loud noise every so often. The restaurant is ridiculously overpriced and the options are minimal. Definitely not what I expected from a hotel that looks like this. It is close to OSU, and that is the only reason it gets 2 and not 1 star. People were also nice. read more

I hate the Buckeyes, but The Blackwell was great! When I found out that this hotel was basically on the campus at Ohio State, I was ready to not enjoy my stay at all. It was a long few days of travel and finding out that The Blackwell was on the Ohio State campus, for some reason, put me in a foul mood. I was ready to find something wrong with the service or the facility. I'm usually a pretty positive and upbeat guy, but I just wasn't ready to enjoy staying here. All that being said, this place was fantastic. It was absurd how every need seemed to be anticipated, every face was genuinely smiling, and all of this in a very well appointed room at an excellent value. It was almost disturbing that these guys did so well...everyone really knocked it out of the park on this one! I'll continue to not like the Buckeye sports teams, but will go out of my way to stay at this hotel again. Great job to all of you at The Blackwell. read more

Great food - great hassles. I attend a catered dinner and awards night each year hosted at the Blackwell. It is a beautiful venue and offers accomodations for out of town visitors. Recently, a new chef took over and introduced special items for our organization. The food: Very good. They can cook a filet perfectly. There's a bit too much going on for a plating. I had a surf and turf - steak and sea bass (I only wish it Chilean, but alas it wasn't). There was well-seasoned sauted spinach beneath the sea bass, but the sea bass was covered in tasteless parsley and lacked salt or pepper. The filet was atop a balsalmic gravy (tasty, but unneccessary) and was cooked too perfectly to require much additional seasoning. In fact, the gravy was a distraction. There also was a delicious sweet potatoe mash, well-seasoned spaghetti squash, and squished tomatoes. This was too many "other" items that detracted from the dish. Servers and Service: Sadly, it goes downhill. Maybe this is a management problem, maybe not. Several tables never recieved their entrees! They just forgot to serve them dinner, but served them salads and desserts. What a mess! The coffee service is nice and the food was served at temperature. They did two rounds of wine service (I'd rather they just leave a bottle at the table). I look forward to another tastly treat again soon! read more

I stayed here before finally transferring to Ohio State. *The beds are so comfortable, and the pillows are fat with stuffing!* The service is generally great, from its airport shuttle to its concierge, and its wireless connection is excellent--as is the business computer lab, which is amply soundproofed despite its location near the reception hall (where I gather many a Buckeye wedding party is held for alumni couples). A special shout-out to the airport shuttle drivers, who I notice are usually OSU undergrads, and with whom I've held pleasant conversations. My only minor gripe would probably be the valet drivers/doorpersons, also undergrads. Sometimes they kind of just "hang out" there, talking about their party exploits or something of the like--or maybe that's just what I just keep running into when I encounter them? So maybe it's just me. Anyway, I honestly wish I could dorm here. :-D read more

I stayed at the Blackwell for a wedding I attended that was held in the banquet hall. The hotel room was clean though it felt a little small. The staff was professional and friendly though, and the room was comfortable. The weddng itself was a little generic. The food was just ok, the bar set up was less than ideal and seating during the cocktail hour wasn't easy to find or comfortable. The Blackwell has a great location for all Buckeye related events, but they know this and charge accordingly. This is usually the very last place I consider when I'm coming to Columbus. read more

One of my favorite hotels. I've been staying at the Blackwell roughly once a year from almost the time that they opened, more than a decade ago. The Blackwell was the very first hotel at which I stayed where there was (free) internet in the rooms, and I've been impressed with this place from the get-go. Very comfortable beds, a kitchy turn-down service in which chocolates are placed on the bed and the bedside radio is tuned to music that features the likes of Barry Manilow, the Spinners, etc. (these being two of the featured artists in songs that were playing when I entered my room last week). The shades are true blackout shades - the room can be pitch dark at high noon on June 21 - and everything is comfortable. My only negative comments about The Blackwell are that the exercise room is really quite lame, an indoor pool would be a great addition, and the breakfasts - while good - is not "fantastic" and really should be comped to the guests at the hotel. read more

I stayed here two nights for a wedding. The wedding reception was at the hotel so that was nice so we didn't have to go anywhere afterwards. But for the price I paid I would be expected to have a lot more included in my stay. I had to pay an additional 18/night for the valet parking they had. It was either valet or use the self parking which was close to the same price point. Then there was no microwave in our room or anywhere in the hotel for public use. If we wanted to use a microwave we had to pay an additional $15/day. The staff was nice and they had a 24 hour gym which had a good selection of equipment. But I wouldn't stay here again. I'd rather find somewhere with better amenities for the price I paid. read more

The Blackwell is an exceedingly comfortable hotel, with spacious rooms (mine had a very long desk with two chairs, ample outlets for charging phones/computers/ipods; a king sized bed, and a nook with a fridge/coffee pot), and very comfortable beds. The folks working at the hotel - many of whom are very young, and I assume in some kind of hotel management/hospitality program - are incredibly willing to be helpful (though sometimes you have to ask specific questions like "When will my shuttle to the airport be here?" to get the answers you want). And the small touches they have here - Lindt truffles on your bed every evening - are nice. The only downsides - the rooms aren't the quietest - by 7am, I could hear folks walking up and down the hallway, and housekeeping knocking on doors, and that was about an hour earlier than I would have liked. And, the room service breakfast was mediocre (watery tasteless oatmeal, and the promise of a bread basket which was actually a tiny croissant and a big danish that looked straight out of a NJ diner circa 1985.) But these are small missteps - the Blackwell is a very comfortable place to stay. read more

My first stay at The Blackwell was pleasant. The staff was professional and I was greeted promptly. Our room was relatively spacious complete with cable TV, a marble bathroom and decent sheets. I woke up to a USA today at my door which is always a nice touch. The lobby was decorated for Christmas and very pretty. They went a little too far with a cinnamon scent, they really don't need it and it gave me a headache. The banquet meal was good. What you would expect from a hotel. I'm rounding up a 3.5 star to a 4. The hotel met my expectations and I applaud the students who run it. They are doing a great job operationally but at the end of the day this is a business hotel, it is not the Ritz Carlton. read more

The food was tasty and it was well located within Columbus. The rooms were extremely comfortable and I had no complaints about anything. I did have an unfortunate experience with the front desk, where they didn't know too much about the running trails in the area. I was directed to run in the OSU campus, rather than taking the nice riverside trail feet from the hotel door. The trail was very nice, whereas the campus would not have been a very nice run. read more
