cafe kazka is such a hidden gem in foster city! my friend and I came to check it out for lunch…read moreafter hearing it was a hong kong-style cafe, and were not disappointed at all. first, the cafe is so cute and also spotless- I could've stayed all day just reading or doing work. there was lots of outdoor seating overlooking the water which was so nice! I got an iced HK style coffee + milk tea which I've never had before but was so delicious. I'd definitely come back to try the other fruity drinks too! we ordered the tom yum noodles, preserved vegetables & pork noodle soup, salt & pepper fries, and the HK style french toast with peanut butter. the french toast was our favorite- it was fluffy and chewy and was just like the HK classic. the noodle dishes were both so hearty and flavorful too, and the portions were a good size. it did take a bit long for everything to come out, but it did seem like there was only one person working and she was very kind and accommodating when we had questions about our order. we didn't mind at all, especially sitting outside and enjoying the view! overall, I'll for sure be back for the drinks and to try some other HK style street food.

We stopped by this cafe for breakfast a couple of days ago after a long walk around Foster City,…read moreand unfortunately, we left with very mixed feelings. We ordered two breakfasts, and I have absolutely no complaints about the food. Everything was fresh and tasty, with fresh vegetables and berries, and overall the breakfast itself was very enjoyable. The coffee, however, was a completely different story. It was honestly terrible. Both the cup and the coffee itself had a strong plastic smell and taste, which made it almost impossible to drink. I took one sip and couldn't finish it. Unfortunately, the coffee really ruined the overall breakfast experience for me. If you're going to serve coffee to customers, I really think the quality needs to be improved significantly, whether that means using better equipment, better cups, or having someone who actually knows how to prepare good coffee. Another downside was the lack of personal interaction. Almost everything is handled through an AI/self-service terminal, with very little communication with the staff. For a new cafe, I personally think that takes away a lot from the experience. Hospitality and human interaction still matter, especially in a place where people come to relax and enjoy breakfast. The food was good, but considering the coffee quality and the overall service experience, would I come back? Unfortunately, no.

This is an absolute awesome spot if you are looking to celebrate a special occasion and you…read moreappreciate Asian cuisine that is meticulously prepared in a very unique style. We prebooked the set menu. Boy was it a dining experience! From start to finish, every single dish was so deliciously curated. The waitstaff was also extremely friendly and did such a great job explaining all the intricacies of each dish. By the end of our meal, our tummies were full and the entire journey from appetizer to dessert was so satisfying. 808 Zone is truly a place that we will plan to revisit for our next special occasion.

The ambiance is a bit similar to a fast casual restaurant than that of a high end course meal and the service aligns with that. Bathrooms are in a bit of a sorry state and chairs are peeling at the edges. Service is a bit clumsy and rushed. No one asks for any food restrictions before the meal and it isn't asked when reservations are being made, so you'll have to actively speak up if you need this addressed. Dishes are only fully explained at the bar, if you sit at the standard tables you'll get a very basic dish explanation. The food is mostly Chinese Japanese fusion and some dishes knock it out of the park, like the chawanmushi which is fused with flavors of Chinese egg drop soup. Some really drop the ball, like the scallion noodles which were soggy and overly greasy, the oil was not properly infused with the green onion and so you just got mushy soggy plain oil flavored noodles. The course lacked consistency. Some dishes were incredible, some average, and some downright bad. There's a lack of consistency in the prep also, there were crab shells in the orange crab dish, there was a bad bitter uni in one of the chawanmushi, etc. I think the ambiance, service, and course doesn't add up to the $150 price tag. There's definitely potential but the lack of effort does affect the overall experience.

We got two each of the quito beef (it's sweet b/c of raisins, you have to try it!), spicy chicken, spinach w/cheese, and mushroom w/cheese. They were all delicious! Also, we got one of each of the sweet ones as well; guava w/ cheese, and nutella. They offer red & green sauce. Red is mild, green has some punch and twang. Both tasty. The empanada dough is the same for each I think; just the right amount of flakiness to keep it light without exploding, and still have a little bit of doughy chew. Perfection! I won't pretend I know anything about Ecuadorian cuisine but I know this was super yummy and I'll be back! Who doesn't love a good meat pie from any culture?

This is only my second time in my life, having plantains, but I like them. There's just enough starch, and they are fried so they are a nice replacement for the traditional hash brown. The inside dining space is small, but if it is nice out, sit outside by the water. In the morning, you can watch the birds and the kayaks; in the afternoon, you can watch all the boats go by. I recommend sitting outside. They do serve dinner, but only on the weekends, but they are working on their schedule so that they can be open longer hours during the summer. We will come back and try their dinner.

Everything looked appetizing and tasted good. The beverages were enticing. I stuck with a mimosa. I'm giving overall three stars as my stomach became upset while eating. I thought maybe it was my Starbucks pumpkin latte with oatmilk from next door which I thought odd. Then I had the same issue at home later when I finished my leftovers from lunch. No one else in my group had an issue. My lunch entree - the chicken shibuya. Two pieces of deep fried chicken breast sliced up. Came with a side of salad and a scoop of white rice. One friend also had the same entree. Great Asian fusion food presentation. Food came quickly and water glasses refilled as needed. Very easy & plenty of parking.

The flavors and quality were good, and I felt everything was worth the price point. My husband was initially skeptical because the pickup location gave him ghost kitchen vibes. From what I could tell, it seemed to be a commercial kitchen shared by multiple businesses, so he wasn't sure what to expect in terms of quality. I'm glad I decided to give it a try since it's been bookmarked for a while! I preordered a deluxe platter ($450) which comes with 60 assorted nigiri for pickup on a holiday Monday around 1:30pm. Ordering via their form online was simple and easy and I received plenty of communication leading up to the pickup on where/when to pickup and who to contact for any changes or concerns. The pickup spot in San Mateo is a ghost kitchen setup, and parking was a little difficult (I got dropped off while my ride circled around). Once inside, there are a few tablets as well as doorbells labeled with different businesses. I pressed the one labeled for the backhouse and got our order at the door after waiting for a few minutes - there do also seem to be a lot of people picking up delivery service orders and generally seems to be confusing for the other businesses in the same space but I was able to get in and out pretty quickly. Onto the sushi - everything was delicious and they were kind enough to give us 3 of everything as I had requested to make it easier to split between our party of 3 which I really appreciate. The rice was nicely seasoned and not over or undercooked, and the standout has to be the uni. I really liked the asortment of fish/topping combinations and felt like there was a good mix of unique offerings and classics but the one thing I wished we had was some kind of guide or lost of what the fish we had were so I could better appreciate what I was eating. Overall, I'm glad I finally got to try the Backhouse and it was definitely tasty and a convenient way to enjoy some really high quality fish, but I think personally I prefer having the fish in a way where I can know more about what I'm eating to really enjoy the meal :)
