Great atmosphere, wonderful food, and good ale! A true highlight of our trip to St. David's.

My bed was quite comfortable, I was asked if I wanted to change towels on the second day which they kindly did. Cooked breakfast is included - from 8 to 9am. They even kindly called me when I left my charger upon check out!

Stayed April 2015: "Family Business in the Smallest City in South Wales - Hotel, Restaurant, &…read moreBar" We arrived later in the evening, close to 8pm, and had to go to the dining room/bar since there was no concierge desk. We were greeted by the bartender, whom was friendly and let us know that the owner will be with us shortly. The owner was dressed in chef attire, and took us up the flight of stairs - no lift. She showed us around the room, provided us with the key, and she let us know when dinner service ends. Our room had 2 double beds, dresser, wardrobe, TV, a couch up against the bay window, and end tables. I was able to stand on the couch, to get a view of the ocean behind the row of houses in front of the inn. The room was extremely spacious, compared to the other hotel rooms we had stayed at. Apparently we were given the family en-suite room. The bathroom was tiny. It housed the sink, toilet, and one person shower. We decided to have dinner at the hotel. The menu had a vast assortment of cuisines to chosen from. My friend got the mushroom stroganoff and I decided on the chicken curry dish. My friend really enjoyed her dish and I thought my dish's curry sauce was on the bland side. After finishing our meal, we decided to venture over to the bar. It was extremely tiny area that held 2-3 tables, a booth, and then opened to more spacious space that held the pool table and a few stools to sit on. There were bouncers assisting with not only keeping the peace but clearing the tables. There was nowhere to sit at the bar, so you had to walk up and wait but you didn't have to wait long. The crowd was more college based adults, and a few of the locals. The place is in the heart of the city center, and less than a 5 minute walk from St David's Cathedral.

We had two more due to join us, but at 7:03 we were asked to vacate the large table and go ahead with our order. I understand the 2 hour time limit, but to ask us to order at 3 minutes past was just plain rude. I ordered the rib-eye medium, so make sure you take a look at the photo of my steak (well-done). We were rushed, so I knew I'd lose valuable time if I sent it back. The "hostess" was very...intense. She seemed stressed and no matter how hard she tried to fake it, she came across as very harsh. After we left and had time to reflect, each of us wished we'd have just gotten up and left. The food wasn't worth feeling as though we were putting her out. There was also a man working (a manager maybe?) who leered at us all evening. The whole experience was just weird and uncomfortable, so of course I recommend a picnic or a pub instead.

Cwtch, pronounced as coutch, meaning something like 'hug' but officially not even a real Whelsh…read moreword or so, has it all: a popular location (St Davids), a good team, good food, pretty stylish interior and not too bad pricing. Cwtch is more or less the only real restaurant in the small city (other options mostly the pubs), I believe, and therefore definitely the best place to go if you want to have diner in the town itself. The ground floor has a nice modern decor and good relaxed atmosphere (I would not prefer to be seated upstairs) We ordered and liked the wine of the month and we had a good tasty 3 course menu. The quality of the food was not outstanding, the fish I had was a bit too well-done (dry) to my liking, but definitely worth the money. They change the menu daily and use as much as possible seasonal and local ingredients. This can mean the vegetables/potatoes sides can be a bit basic and nothing fancy but it's fresh and tasty. St Davids being the smallest city in the UK but very popular to visit makes it difficult to find a decent place to have dinner without booking so make sure you make reservations well ahead if you are planning to come here (especially in the weekends).

But the Farmer's has a bit more edge to it. The sort of place that takes a bit more guts to enter. As you open the door, do things go just a little bit quiet? It feels like that as the locals check you out and then carry on with their stories. The ceilings are low and beamed and there are nooks and crannies all over the place making this pub feel like a little smugglers' den. If you can find a place in the teeny weeny mini bar round the side it's a really lovely snug to sit and slowly get drunk. As is the seat built into the wall in the main bar. Take pictures of the locals and they will frown and mutter. Get served before them and there might be an audible tut. But if you can get over that, this is the place to hunker down and let the sea air and the ale do their thing. Warm them up and you can't stop them talking. By eight the place is usually very lively indeed, all tables for food taken and all snuggly places bagged. But you'll be happy enough standing there in the main bar drinking in the ale and the atmosphere. Service is quick and friendly. The menu has all the classics, but unlike the Bishop's they do some snazzy specials usually consisting of locally caught fish. It's not cheap but it's very good. A kitchen clearly enjoying doing great things with whatever comes in on the boats. You are welcome to eat outside in the garden which is more functional than beautiful but has the bonus of an extra bar so you don't have to pick your way through the thronging evening masses and their damp dogs. Now then. Pluck up some courage to go ask for some change for the pool table. for more reviews from me of establishments in St Davids do look up... The Bishop's Cwytch St David's Food and Wine. Walking through the door you can feel the charisma of the place with a proper village pub feel without the feeling of " are you local" In the winter months the pub has a gorgeous open log file and importantly is warm throughout. The passion for running and keeping a good pub going is evident not only by the cleanliness and the "feel" of the place but the meticulous attention to the level of beer served within. There have been moments where a flat pint has been taken away and re pulled as it wasn't up to standard. For those who like their bitters the range is always changing and the staff are knowledgeable on whats what and can be a fine place to expand your bitter drinking horizons. I cant comment on the smoking area however the games room is just that, nice and functional without that feeling of being tacked on and although out of the way not so much that its segregated to not have some of the vibe come from a good night happening. I've not even mentioned the Indian restaurant out the back which is second to none. So now onto the bad points, the jukebox has that much of a vast selection you'll find that your songs have already played by the time you get to select them all. With the amount of bitters changed it would be nice to see perhaps the same on beers, perhaps a guest lager just now and again. Then again at the time of writing this Carlsberg is only.....2.50 so how can i really be critical of the beer. Yes perhaps a bit touching at straws. Anyways its one of those fine pubs with the traditional warm welcoming atmosphere anytime of the week. Oh and it's the place where the solva beer festival is held as well!

We have had countless family occasions and gatherings here, mainly because of it's great interior, history and the stunning environment. However, as an example I decided to take some friends out to dinner here after avoiding the place for 2 years. I had hoped the service snd food would be of higher quality..how wrong I was to have expected a change. I ordered a veggy burger as a change from my usual fish dish, my friends opted for plaice, the angry dog burger and cod & chips. My burger was just a sloppy slushy tepid mess, my chips were even colder. The dishes were slapped onto the table by a grumpy young waitress without any words or a smile, I was appauled at how bad it was and was really embarassed that my friends were experiencing the worse food and service they had ever come across..at one point we all looked at each other and laughed in disbelief because it was just unbeleivably bad! I never ever send food back or complain, but on this occassion I had no choice. I asked the waitress very politely if my chips could be warmed up, without a word she snatched my plate and stormed off..awful. Eventually she flounced back, slapped plate onto table and walked away. I have been a waitress and I would never treat diners, or anyone for that matter, like that. It wasn't busy and there were plenty of staff. My friends dishes were also cold and bland. For the prices and provenance of the sloop you'd expect food, portions and service to match! It's not a one off experience, this type of service, small portion, cold food has happened more than I care to remember and unfortunately myself,my family and friends have decided not to spend a penny more there which is a shame as we live nearby and would love to spend time celebrating family occasions inside it's great interior. I wish I'd never parted with my money on that night, I should have complained to the management, but all of us just wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible. Come on Sloop management, train your staff correctly and keep a very close eye on food before it leaves the pass..basic stuff!

The food is typically standard pub grub. Due to it's location and the scarcity of alternatives, it can get pretty busy in the summer with tourists and surfers. But boy do they do beer. There are usually two or three real ales a small selection of spirits (all the usual culprits) a lager or two (for those sad persons who feel the need) and of course Guinness. One or two cracking single Malts There is a pool table (in great condition) and a dart board. The gents toilets are CLEAN with real towels!!! My wife says the ladies is just as good. The beer is ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS, in first class condition. The pub is peopled by locals and the occasional holiday maker who found it by complete accident. The locals (many of whom speak Welsh as a Mother Tongue) are always unfailingly welcoming and helpful. If you're a broken down holiday maker and the guys in the bar can't fix it - they'll know a man who can. They'll tell you all the GOOD places to go and all the bad places to avoid and - give them time - they'll get you to fall in love with it too. The landlord is a Londoner (!!) who happened on the place by accident and LITERALLY never left - He bought the place. No anti-english feeling here, and I should know - I'm a local (when I'm home). This pub is what a village pub always was and now never is - the centre of the little village in which it thrives. They organise the street parties, all the local darts, pool, Guy Fawkes Nights Summer Bar-B-Qs etc etc.. If you want to know where to eat ask here, know where to fish - ask here, any local information at all - ask here. Only open after about 5pm but this varies! You have been warned.
