My husband and I attended her Birthing from Within class in July and she definitely helped us to understand that birth can be a wonderfully natural, beautiful experience. Olivia was born on Aug 12 at 1012 pm. She weighed 7 lbs 12 oz and was 21 in long. I began having contractions at 4 am and my water broke at 630 pm. The hard labor was intense but I did it with no medications, and we had no complications! She was/is perfectly healthy thank God. Her class was instrumental in helping me to go forward with no medications. I couldn't have asked for a better birth (unless I can get one with absolutely no pain) haha. I will never forget my experience with Jessica's birthing class - it's incredible how someone can walk you into a situation where you're faced emotionally with what's to come during birth. That's about as close to it as you can get without yet experiencing it. Facing natural childbirth is something she clearly has a WIDE range of experience with and it was so comforting to be a part of that learning experience with my husband. We left feeling closer to each other and more understanding of our strengths, weaknesses, fears and needs, which really does hold a tremendous amount of weight when going through labor, birth and bringing a child into the world together. I had quite a few people roll their eyes when they heard about my 4 Saturdays spent at birthing classes as if it was a "hoo-hoo-hee" Lamaze type of class, with responses like "None of that shit does any good when you get there." Little do they know what we were able to take away from this wonderful experience together on such a deeper level than some generic breathing technique. I feel more confident in my (and my husband's) emotional and physical ability to get through this naturally, assuming we have that opportunity :) Jessica is unfortunately unable to be my doula as she was booked with another Mommy-to-be the same week (which is this week!), which is a super bummer as my connection with her was on point (to say the least), so don't hesitate when reaching out and scheduling a consultation as she's well sought out! Our class with Jessica was Amazing. From the very beginning I felt she made time for us, even though she was very busy and considering the time of year. Luckily, we managed to schedule an intro basics class with her and have at hand preparation for our son's upcoming birth. Everything about the experience captured what we needed and as a mom to be I am so grateful. Her experience, nature and offerings are phenomenal and loved her in-depth, easy going and very complete teaching style. My favorite part was that she made it feel very much like a visceral experience, which we were able to embody, feel and trust into. When Jessica & I met through a mutual friend, I had no idea the adventure we had in front of us! My husband & I were very grateful to finally be pregnant after years of trying, a difficult loss and involved fertility treatments. As my pregnancy advanced and we were beginning to plan for delivery, I met with Jessica and instantly fell in love with her and her approach to birth. Had no idea what to expect with a birthing class being a first time mom! I imagine birth can be a pretty emotional experience and taking Jessica's class really helped sort out questions that I had, but also some personal fears and feelings I never even knew were there! If you're looking for a cookie cutter kind of class that treats every birthing experience as the same this is NOT the class for you. I strongly feel that when people spoke Jessica truly listened, and offered comfort and solutions to whatever your birth/parenting fears might be. I love that the class offered this sort of "safe haven" to be open about your feelings in regards to birth. In discussion there were no right or wrong answers, and no promises that things will go a certain way or in a certain order. My husband and I seemed to really bond with not only Jessica, but with the other people in our class. Having just moved to the state with no family around, establishing a group of friends who are "in the trenches" with us has proven to be invaluable. I would recommend Jessica over and over again. I have had two children and two very different birth stories. The first was full of fear, bullying, deception, anger, regret, some scary Cytotec, an Epidural and a beautiful baby girl. My second was fantastically better, thanks to my amazing doula, Jessica Chapman. She began assisting me in the late weeks of my pregnancy. As we discussed my past experiences and planned for the approaching delivery, Jessica was very in tune with my fears and the lack of confidence I had in my own ability to give birth naturally. However, she also saw my deep desire to bring my new baby into the world drug and intervention free. There are only a handful of moments I remember from my labor. The first was early in the morning as I was just beginning to feel steady contractions. Because I lacked many of the text-book signs of early labor my family did not trust that it is was time to head to the hospital. However, Jessica came down to my eye level, as I was sitting on my birthing ball, rubbed my knees soothingly, looked into my eyes and validated my intuition that it was time to have this baby. Although I was managing pain well I still clung to the idea of an escape through Epidural. Without bullying or manipulating Jessica gently encouraged me to let that Epidural go. As birth intensified and it came time to push, the medical staff began to disrupt my space. They brought fear and judgment when they walked into the room, but I would look at my doula and she would reassure me and help me back into my "sacred space". I am so grateful she was there to protect, support and guide me. She not only helped welcome my healthy baby boy into the world, she brought a more confident, powerful woman to life in me. Jessica is AMAZING!! I can't say enough great things about how taking her class helped us prepare for the birth of our first baby. I am seeing Robyn Pool at PUSH Midwifery for my midwife and she introduced me to Jessica and taking her class has really answered a lot of questions and fears I feel like a traditional class doesn't approach. She helped me personally through some situations I didn't even want to think about... like a cesarian. This is not something I wanted to think about because it is not something I want to happen in my birth. Yet Jessica helped me think about the fact that I should be open to any situation to be prepared for the feelings if something unpredictable happens. Because it is birth after all... the most unpredictable and emotional thing a woman can go through. So to her, I am thankful for that because it has made me feel really prepared for anything to happen and to be ready for it. I also have to say how much I loved that she included the role of the birth partners. We came into this class a little clueless even with all the research we did. And I love that Jessica set us off with a knowing of both of our roles we can take on in this adventure of birth and having our first baby, that will only empower us more as a couple and help each other get through the birth together more knowledgable and connected. My partner and I took Jessica's 4 week class this last October in preparation for our first baby and it was absolutely fantastic. A perfect mix of absolutely practical, down to earth advice on pain coping techniques, stages of labor, and all the nitty gritty no one tells you about, but also a really good overview of a lot of the emotional aspects that can either help or hinder the whole process of labor, delivery, and postpartum. I would 100% recommend this class to anyone who feels like maybe it would be nice to go into labor with a little more realistic view then you can get from a twentieth rereading of What to Expect. We were able to do a package with her and took her birth classes as well as had her as our Doula. Her birth classes went Wayover what I feel like we would've learned at the hospital classes. They were intimate and personalized. She truly is such an educated person but will get real with you if you know what I'm saying! She really gets down to the nitty-gritty and honestly after taking her classes I felt so empowered to go into labor, I was actually looking forward to how my birth story would turn out. Knowing that she was going to be at her birth made me feel so comfortable but at the same time she didn't interfere with the connection of me and my husband. I think that's important that she made us an even stronger couple and how to handle everything we were going through. I ended up with a pretty long labor and she was there through the whole thing and she stepped in at just the right times and gave me strength when I needed it. I highly recommend Jessica Chapman's birthing again class! When I hoped for a natural birth of my first baby, I was very fearful of childbirth even though my husband and I went to the hospital's birthing class and "practiced" at home. That class was very informative about logistics of birthing, but never addressed the emotional side. I ended up not going into labor, being induced at 41wks and having an epidural when I couldn't get past a rough patch. Preparing for my second baby--well, I didn't really. I thought I didn't really need to since I'd done it before, plus I was pretty preoccupied with my toddler. That ended up in a cesarean birth. Third time around, I was determined to have a VBAC and I wanted it naturally. For this I needed a lot of mental and emotional preparation--which I had skipped altogether the first two times! Enter Jessica Chapman. Jessica has an amazing way of empowering moms in their past birth stories. I had been carrying around so much guilt, shame and negative labels I'd given to myself for 5 years! This of course lead to fear about the pending birth of my child. But fear is the root of pain--it has no place in birth! Jessica was able to help me reframe the most scarring memories of childbirth into positive reflections of myself. I don't mean just focusing on the positives, but actually re-labeling the meanings behind the negative parts of the experiences. This has been amazingly empowering! I feel like a new woman and a new mom. Jessica involves the dads in this class as much as the moms. She asked husbands to remember a point in birth that their wives were particularly strong and powerful. My husband's answer was the exact moment I had felt weak and powerless and carried away so much guilt from! Both partners work on emotional prep for childbirth. Don't warn your husband before hand that there will be lots of talking about feelings and probably some crying in a birthing again class. ;-) But I can speak for my own husband that he found this work in himself to be incredibly worthwhile. And working with me through my stuff certainly helped strengthen our strong bond as we headed into the birth of our 3rd son. Where do I start? Dads: I am a future dad and was going in expecting Jessica's class to be a 'mom' centered class. However, I was wrong and in a big way! Her class was more for 'dads to be' than moms in my opinion. A lot of it was focused on the psychological aspect of the pregnancy process and not just physical (labor side of everything). Jessica focused on what your fears, thoughts, and wishes were for your (dad) experience; some I did not even know I had until she asked I about them which was crazy but great. I know the women in our life go through more than we can ever know or imagine and we are more than grateful for it, but it was nice to have someone talk about what I was feeling and thinking, aside from my wife. And to top it off, we have become very close with the 2 other couples in the class and have already spent time with them after class had finished. It is so nice to have friends that are experiencing the same thing you are going through and being able to have those relationships, we only have Jessica to thank. The class was very informative and was not the cookie cutter class I was expecting! You will be so happy you took it. I left the class feeling so comfortable about what was to come. Dad's this is a class you will love to take, this is not your standard "breathing/ lamaze" class, this is a REAL LIFE class. Good luck! read more

My wife and I knew we wanted to hire a doula for our first pregnancy, and after interviewing a few candidates we chose Jessica. Before we even met her, My wife knew from just seeing her picture, she was going to be "the one". Just moments into our consultation with Jessica, I gave my wife the look like "yep, we're hiring her." Jessica's down-to-earth realness mixed with professionalism and knowledge is second to none. We were excited and stoked to have her on our team. We started with her Birthing from Within classes about 3 months prior to our due date. I'll admit I was a little nervous attending birth classes with a bunch of pregnant mamas, but they turned out to be a lot of fun! Not only that, we met some friends whom we still talk to..which is really cool. It was a 4 part class with only 3 other couples which was nice. You didn't just feel like a number or something. It was very informative with lots of one on one time in a laid back atmosphere. I felt like I could ask any question and get a very thorough answer. Nothing felt rushed, which I really liked. It was a great way to get to know Jessica before our birth, and make some friends along the way. After the classes Jessica came to meet with us at our home 2 times before our birth to go over anything we might have forgot or anything we missed. We really feel like we got to know her throughout this time and can honestly say it felt like a friend was attending our birth with us. Guys- not only do you want your wife/girlfriend to feel completely at ease, YOU also want to feel comfortable and be able to communicate clearly with your doula. When your wife is in a contraction she's not gonna be talking to anybody. When your wife needs something, and she's contracting and can't speak, you need to communicate for her. Having this much 1 on 1 with Jessica beforehand I really feel like I got to know her and be comfortable communicating with her in a somewhat stressful but beautiful life event. Our daughters birthday came a few weeks early and my wife was in labor for 30+ hours! We labored at home for most of the day, and Jessica came over to assess the situation and assure us that "it's happening". We arrived at the hospital that night with Jessica waiting when we arrived. My wife and I had no fear going into this labor. We knew we had pro on our side! The L&D rooms were completely full so we had to labor in one of the tiny intake rooms for what felt like days. It was cramped and a little crazy but it didn't bother Jessica at all. She stayed by our side the whole time. One of the most invaluable aspects of this entire experience is how I never felt I was bothering Jessica in any way. 13+ hours of laboring at the hospital? No problem. Ask the nurse some ridiculous question for us? No problem. Hold a trash can so my wife can throw up in it? No problem. As a man I never want to feel like I'm asking too much of someone, and I absolutely never felt that way. She was by our side through the entire experience and through every turn, thus helping make our birth story beautiful. My husband and I took two private classes with Jessica. Jessica entered our home and immediately I felt at ease. She has such good energy. Before we started diving into the class, Jessica wanted us to simply talk, to get to know each other. I really appreciated this. I felt cared for and respected and within about 30 minutes of the class, I cried and confessed my biggest childbirth fears. Jessica normalized my fears, which I didn't think was even possible. After our first class, I woke up the next morning feeling like a new mom-to-be. My attitude had shifted and I felt more relaxed, informed, and optimistic. My husband noticed this change in me, and he noted that he was feeling much better, too. We both believe that having Jessica as our childbirth educator was a great decision. We got a lot out of the activities and discussions, and we continue to talk about what we learned in class. Jessica is a very good listener and she validated all of our questions, even when we may have felt our question was too "silly." I found Jessica on Yelp and couldn't agree more with her other 5 star reviews. I hadn't given much thought to what "natural" childbirth entailed, I just knew I didn't want an epidural. I have a medical background and I knew the hospital classes covered more of the medical aspect so I decided to seek an alternative birthing class. My main goal was learning pain management techniques since I didn't want the epidural. I read about Jessica's classes and figured it wouldn't hurt to go; my husband, on the other hand, was a little skeptical because he didn't understand the role of a doula and felt like we already had all the information we needed regarding childbirth. After just one class, we both felt so much more comfortable about our impending delivery. After 4 classes, we felt much more emotionally prepared and it was nice to bond with our classmates going through the same experience. We ended up hiring Jessica as our doula because we had a hospital birth planned and knew it was going to be a constant battle to have a natural birth in a medical setting. I had a very unique labor (drawn out and pain-free until the very end) so didn't end up going to the hospital until I was in transition. This made for a quick delivery, but even so, Jessica was right by my side. With the help of her and my husband, I was able to give birth without an epidural and my vision for a natural birth became a reality. Before taking her classes, I felt confident about the details of pregnancy and birth but I was not prepared for the psychological component. Her classes are are almost more like therapy sessions to get you to open up and discuss your fears and for that, my husband and I are very grateful because it forced us to talk about things I'm certain we otherwise would not have. She is a wonderful resource for any and all questions during pregnancy, labor and delivery as well as postpartum.
