From the time we signed up, to the time we boarded the plane to return home, TEP took care of every detail. We commented amongst ourselves that we felt like kids on vacation with our parents, as we didn't have to worry about any of the details - just show up and follow Neptali (our guide). From airport pickup in Cusco in luxury Mercedes vans where we were promptly served Coca tea to help with the altitude acclimation, to group dinners at amazing Peruvian restaurants, to historical tours and education on the history of the Inca - everything was covered and taken care of for us. And that was all before the amazing trek along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu! Of course the trek itself was the highlight of the trip, and although it was extremely challenging for us, TEP's unbelievable attention to detail did not fail us on the trail. With nearly a 2:1 porter to trekker ration, our every need was met on the trail. We dined like kings every meal, and were consistently amazed with the quality (and nutritional appropriateness) of the food our chef and sous chef were able to put out with minimal kitchen conveniences. The thing I felt was most special about TEP's approach to this trip was the focus on gaining a cultural and historical appreciation for what we were experiencing. Every step along the way, we learned about the native people of Peru, the Inca civilization, the many ruins we came across, the vegetation we saw and how it was and is used, and the history of modern Peru. It was the trip of a lifetime, and have the help of The Explorer's Passage made it so much more enjoyable, and so much more memorable. The value of what they provide is amazing for the cost....rather, for the investment. I highly recommend them!

Now if you've read my lifestyle website, Piercing Ken dotcom (shameless plug), you know that I love exploring a wide assortment of museum exhibits and art openings along with the occasional special launches. Back in April, the Society debuted an exhibit called "Uptown Rumble", which was dedicated to the Metal, Rock, Punk and Hardcore bands that launched in the Bronx. This was a great idea when one considers how members of KISS, Twisted Sister, The Dictators and New York Dolls all called The Bronx their home. This interesting exhibit will run until 1/12/26 so if you're curious about checking it out you don't have a whole lot of time left to look into it. So the museum itself is quaint but very fascinating and is located in the Valentine-Varian House, near Montefiore Medical Center. For me it was a steady, and very long D train ride but then only a few short blocks walk up Bainbridge Avenue. I was told that they are open to the public on the weekends and since I was doing a media appointment I was able to secure some private time today without anyone else milling about. Having a limited window, I only examined the main floor rooms, two of which were for the "Uptown Rumble" presentation and the other for a small George Romero exhibit. I would discover that the rest of that one is running concurrently at the Poe House and since time was not on my side I was unable to visit that location for the rest. There is a historical piece on one of the opposing hall walls and I observed some sports figures on the other side but since I was on a clock, I had to focus on my needs before letting them get back to work. Everything here is dedicated to and focused on being from The Bronx which is nice to find existing even though I'm from faraway Brooklyn. Though I didn't detect an open Wi-Fi, there was a restroom downstairs that was able to be used by the public. As I was pressed for time I didn't get to look around any further downstairs or investigate the upstairs section. Part of me feels that upstairs would be office space for the folks that maintain the museum and curate the exhibits or for talks but this is just a guess. Though I cannot ascertain when my return will be I would like to check the place out once again provided the exhibit matches a need by one of my websites. That's all I've got on this one and as mentioned earlier, if the "Uptown Rumble" exhibit interests you, there are only a few short weeks remaining to examine it.

Admission is generally $5 for adults, $3 for students and seniors and free for children under 12. Free admission for Bronx residents. The museum/manor has three floors with lots of decorated rooms containing some interesting information. The room descriptions provide some background on the house itself, as well as its inhabitants. One of the more interesting areas, is the attic, which housed the enslaved servants. They provide descrptions of how they lived and even a list of the known enslaved servants who served the Van Cortlandts.

The Van Cortlandt family settled from Holland in the 1690s on several thousand acres of farmland with slaves prominently from the Caribbean islands, specifically colonial Jamaica, where the merchant family of Frederick Van Cortlandt imported many goods, such as Rum, Sugar, Allspice, Pimentos, Indigo, Coffee and Chocolate. On their farm they raised cattle, sheep, goats, chicken, pigs, and grew crops of wheat, corn, rye and buckwheat. Fascinating story of a wealthy family. Of course George Washington slept here during the Revolutionary War of 1776. Take the tour and enjoy seeing the rooms of the well preserved three story house. Despite my best efforts in the past to do Fall train rides, which turned out to be disappointing only because there was never any good colors on trees, this by far is the very best fall foliage experience I've ever had in my life. You get great views of the tree color transitions and just great photo opportunities. It does get cold on the water so bring a jacket. Experience is as excellent as last time with beverages and snacks for purchase. If you enjoy fall colors, great scenery and boats then you have to do this at least once.
