It rained that night, but the vineyard's standing heaters and rooftop tent kept our tables warm and dry. The chef and owners of Maximo, a coffee grower from Chiapas, and local cheesemaker, among others, joined us for the send-off. When dinner ended, we all stepped out into the open air and danced in the rain.

They insisted that everyone remained completely silent although we did not see a single person actually doing the work of making wine. They said aggressively over and over silencio, as if we were in the Vatican. Mind you, there wasn't a single person behaving disrespectfully in the large group. The groups are very large, 40 people. They barked their presentation at us as if we were insubordinate young children and they were nuns. The sparking swill we were presented at the end was fuzzy sugar water with a bitter finish. Absolutely undrinkable for a champagne fanatic. I've toured dozens of wineries all over the world, this was unquestionably the worst experience given the rudeness, draconian policies, and terrible product. If you have any understanding of wine, don't waste your time. I suggest visiting the Valley Guadalupe. They produce exceptional product there including brut style sparkling that would surprise and delight any fan of Champagne. The wineries in that region are stunning and the people are gracious and welcoming.

In addition, personalized driving tours are offered in late model cars, generally just a single couple or family per tour. The drivers speak both English and Spanish, which was a huge bonus for us Spanish-limited "foreigners". My wife and I first took the 2 hour city tour, which was actually less expensive that that big city tour "bus" on which narration is only is Spanish. We were so pleased with our cheerful, personable, and historically knowledgeable driver, Uriel, that we have since complete 2 additional all day tours (again, just the two of us and driver), to cities well outside Queretaro, including Pena Bernal and Guanajuato. We couldn't be more enthusiastic in recommending Uriel and his tour company. When we return again (and we WILL), this will be the first place we call for our next tour!
