As a permanent fixture of West Bottoms in Kansas City, honestly had high expectations when it was my first time attending this haunted house. I had this expectation due to them literally having 11 months to get it setup for perfection as isn't a fly by night haunted house attraction. At least they do use this to their advantage with a few, huge animatronics in the haunted house. Yet, unfortunately for this multi-leveled haunted house where VIP tickets are over $40.00 there are probably less than 10 actors through out the attraction. Also a goof portion of the haunted house is filed with mazes and of those mazes are literally pitch dark and black and you're just feeling around in the dark just trying to make it to the next portion. The highlight of the haunted house wasn't even a jump scare or a particular actor but the slide at the end and then being able to jump off the second story. Just make sure you follow instructions - so that you don't hurt yourself. For the price and the outside impression - definitely expected more.

This was absolutely one of the scariest haunted house experiences that I have ever encountered. Carolina haunted houses have nothing on the Kansas City thriller.. The Beast! I was very happy to find out out that Eastern Missourans enjoy a nice scare. First and foremost, I certainly advise you buy your tickets before arriving. The line to get in is incredibly long, and it is very much so worth a few extra bucks to skip all this waiting. I really liked the fact that there were food vendors around on the corners of the streets (food trucks). This helps with the annoying wait time. But once you get inside, everything changes for the better. The actors working at the haunted house do an excellent job at keeping all of us on edge, but without scaring us too badly. I was certainly glad to experience such a wonderfully terrifying experience. The art installations were phenomenal, and designs were very authentic. I would certainly go back next Halloween season!

Quite large yet in need of more actors. The werewolf woods was imaginative and the slide was great. Overpriced. Expected much more.

Additionally, it doesn't matter that you buy tickets online. You will then have to stand in a stupid long line to get a wristband to THEN go stand in line at your haunted house of choice. The coordinators literally just created 1 huge line that takes hours to get through for no reason. No street vendors or entertainment outside of the houses anymore. Haven't been in a few years hence why I didn't know about the armband or general boringness of the current experience but I imagine it'll be my last time.

But don't worry, we were told that they stay open until maybe 11 or midnight so it might be worth getting in line. We were told to stand in the same line as people who didn't buy tickets ahead of time. No warning of this line. They just take your money and assume you'll either give up or spend your entire night in a line an half of a mile long. Absolute joke.

It was completely slammed--even a veteran season passholder in our crew swore they hadn't seen crowds this massive in ten years. You will easily crush your daily step goal just trekking from one end of the park to the other, but fair warning: if you go on a peak night, seriously consider snagging a Fast Lane / Fright Lane pass to bust through the brutal lines. Otherwise, you'll spend half your evening standing still. Also, brace your wallet for the real horror show: the prices. Between specialty cocktails, standard park food, and gift shop merch, concessions are horrifically expensive, so come prepared for serious sticker shock. That said, my CryptKeeper drink in a souvenir cup--a blood-red cherry limeade and vodka concoction--was genuinely delicious and went down dangerously easy. The attractions delivered solid, old-school haunted house vibes. We walked right into a couple, while two or three had monster lines where we had to hold our ground, but the payoff was creepy cool. For rides, strapping into Zulu to get whipped around at breakneck speeds was a blast, But waiting in the line to get there with like being stuck in a traffic jam. Aside from the constipated lines. The hourly live band kept things lively--the female vocalist had serious pipes, which generously balanced out the male singer trying his absolute ghoulish heart out to stay on key. To top it off, snagging next year's season pass for just 30 additional bones was a steal of a deal. (It's a promo if you buy a daily ticket) Huge crowds and steep prices aside, it was a killer night.

A good beginner's house, is how I'd describe it. It's fact, that the original owner of "Poe's Chambers" died in the elevator shaft while doing general maintenance on it. It's also fact, that the coffins used in the "coffin room" are real, once-had-someone-buried-in-them, coffins. They should really capitalize on those two facts to enhance the creepiness of this haunted attraction. They do not even mention it, to my knowledge. Furthermore, something that could be done to enhance the scare factor, is to explain the Poe stories a bit better. Develop the plot. Signs on the wall, a running commentary. A pamphlet they hand out to people in line... I realize the point is to move people through, but there has to be a way to tell the stories better. Maybe a recommendation on the website to read Poe's stories. I haven't read anything by Poe since high school, some 15 year ago. The props in the rooms, although well done, were lacking in any explanation and would have held more "punch" if there had been some instilled fear behind them. Some understanding. I heard people in line talking about the Tell-Tale Heart - they didn't even know the name of the story or any of the details, except something about being buried alive. And, without knowing that, or understanding what you're experiencing afterward in the house - what is there to really be scared of? It's just a maze with some eerie scenes thrown in, a lot of flashing lights and some obstacles to crawl through, but definitely lacking in the spook factor. So, if it's your first time ever experiencing a haunted house, read some Poe stories and then go. Enjoy this and build up to the real thing, a few blocks down and around the corner. If you've already been to the "granddaddy of them all", do not waste your money here. You'll be unimpressed, I fear.
