The day before our tour, Julia called to let us know strong headwinds were expected and asked if we wanted to adjust our time. We already had a different morning tour scheduled, and they were incredibly accommodating with our plans. At the launch site, we met our guide Logan, and we were lucky that it was just our family of four on this tour. Husband and I wore aqua shoes and my daughters opted to wear their Birkenstock sandals and go barefoot, which was fine if you're okay with getting red mud on them. Logan was friendly, patient, and extremely knowledgeable. I was a bit nervous since I'm a beginner kayaker, but he let us move at our own pace. It ended up being a great workout while still feeling peaceful and relaxing. The scenery was absolutely stunning. The canyon was quiet, beautiful, and not crowded at all. We paddled across Lake Powell and into the canyon, and the cool lake water felt amazing in the warm end-of-March weather (mid-80s). They provided life jackets, offered bottled water, and Logan even took photos of us both on the water and at the end of the canyon, which we really appreciated. He also shared helpful paddling tips along the way. The entire tour lasted about 2.5-3 hours and was a perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. John left much time for us to take cool pictures and was a wealth of knowledge. He made sure to engage with each person in the group and was successful in getting the more shy individuals to step out of their comfort zones. John and Sid (the other employee) made this tour worth it. They provided awesome recommendations for things in the area and also future outdoor related activities in the U.S. Be sure to pack enough water. Remember you are in a kayak and your items will likely get soaked. Luckily they provide one water proof bag per kayak which can hold your phone and camera. If you feel the need to pack more, I recommend that you bring your own waterproof back pack. I opted to go barefoot in the kayak and wear shoes on the hike. You will have to walk through water to get on and off of the boat. Do not let your size and fitness level deter you from this tour. I like how they split up the lots with overflow parking. The visitor center is pretty big. As you enter you can see a big area of exhibits that talk about the geology of the dam as well as how Glen Canyon Dam compares to other dams in the world. Quite ominously, there was a exhibit about the water levels and it hadn't been updated in years...the overall trend was that there isn't a lot of water now. You can also watch a movie in back, shop at the gift shop, and get more information about the dam and surrounding areas at the information desk. Don't forget to walk on the bridge nearby, although it can be a bit unnerving to have traffic whizz by with not a lot of distance between you and them.

The Visitor Center has a huge parking lot for added convenience, and it's free of charge. Inside the Visitor Center, you'll find the exhibit with lots of great information and photos about the Dam. There's also a small movie theater, which features a short (30 minutes) movie about the story of building the Glen Canyon Dam. It's very interesting! There is a small gift shop with plenty of stuff to purchase if you are interested. The view of the Glen Canyon Dam is also so much better from the Visitor Center. I highly recommend it stopping by.

But a couple things to note. 1) The front desk personnel do not smile. We had a few interactions with different staff members at the front desk and you could tell none of them wanted to be there. They weren't mean/rude; just apathetic. 2) Breakfast is LACKING. Maybe not the worst complimentary breakfast buffet from a chain hotel but it really falls short. Unless you're content with basic staples such as toast, bagels, 3-4 cereal choices, and 3-4 hot items like sausages, instant scrambled eggs, dry potatoes, look (or stay) elsewhere to start your morning right. One positive of our stay was having a decent dinner at the Prickly Pear "restaurant." The staff at the bar area taking our order and waiting on us were friendly. If/when we return to the area, I won't take their complimentary breakfast into consideration on whether we stay here again.

They explained that they couldn't honor the price match, even though the booking was made through the Wyndham Rewards program, as they are unable to match any lower rates found online. We asked for a ground-floor room to make it easier with our kayaking gear. Since we were staying for four nights, the check-in clerk assigned us to room 154, located around the back, mentioning it was a larger end unit with a sofa. We drove to our room and found the parking to be reasonable. Upon entering, we noticed a very musty smell. Turning up the AC helped reduce the odor somewhat. Then, we spotted granules in the corners of the room, especially in the bathroom and vanity area. Upon closer inspection, we discovered small ants in all the corners. We collected some of the granules and went to the office to ask about them. The check-in clerk explained that it was likely ant poison, as there had been an ant problem on all the ground floors. She offered to switch our room, but since we specifically wanted a ground floor and were told the ants were present in all those rooms, we decided to stay and keep everything off the floor. Unfortunately, the ants didn't stay confined to the floor and corners. Over time, I had to brush them off the pillows, sheets, and nightstand. Using some room deodorizer, we brought along seemed to help kill them. Thank goodness we don't have pets, and/or small children with all the ant poison. It could become a serious issue. On our second night there, it sounded like the tenants above us were using a concrete jackhammer until around midnight. When the noise started again the next afternoon, we realized it was going to be an issue. By 9pm, with the noise still ongoing, we tried to use the room phone on the nightstand to call the office, but the phone was dead. We found the cord, only to discover it wasn't plugged into a jack. After moving the nightstand, we saw there was no jack to plug it into. We ended up taking the phone to the office and reported both the noise from the room above and the phone problem. They assured us the tenants above would be informed immediately. It finally got quiet around 11pm. The rooms are outdated and completely different from the pictures. Don't be misled by the photos the hotel has shared. We are extremely dissatisfied, and if this is what being a Wyndham Rewards member entails, I will consider switching to a different hotel rewards program.
