The store feels a bit like a small art gallery mixed with a gift shop. There are beautiful paintings on the walls, colorful glass pieces hanging from the ceiling. (See pics, the jellyfish was absolutely STUNNING) Somebody please buy this for Cody!!! I went in thinking I'll just take a quick look, then suddenly I had spent twenty minutes wandering around noticing new things on every shelf. A group of four of us went on Saturday & there was one other lady working on a glass project (she's a frequent & was super kind & helpful). Most parties were painting pottery. The worker that helped us was sweet but it was her last day. We spent about 3 hours there. The worker mentioned that on average people spend about an hour there for their first time. Our pieces were a little more intricate so it took a little longer. For 5 pieces it was $200 total. Our pieces were ready for pickup in 7 days because they have to fire it. They can also ship your pieces. Tip: Look up some inspo online/pinterest before you go in. Also I traced the fruits on my phone because I'm not good at drawing.

Indie Banditas is tucked away from the street, but it's worth hunting down. The shop is small, but crammed full of jewelry, bags, beauty products, handmade art, and other trinkets. And, impressively, everything is handcrafted by locals, so you're not just taking home any old souvenir. Everything is pretty affordable, and there are plenty of small treasures for under $10 - I got a solid lemongrass-ginger perfume and a lavender-vanilla lip balm for $3 each. The owner is super-friendly and chatty and loves to talk about her wares and the store. Customers are encouraged to sign the cement floor with a Sharpie marker, and many people already have. If you're on Bainbridge for the day, this is a must-see little boutique that will impress even your fanciest big-city visitors.

We managed to hurry past it on the way to lunch, but I knew there was no way we were getting back to the ferry without going inside. Not with a two-year-old, a five-year-old, and my mother in our crew. To our kids' credit, I wanted to get them a souvenir, or at least allow their grandma to buy them something small with my supervision (she can't be trusted on her own). The store was colorful and appealing, and I couldn't deny my boys the pleasure of a quick, moderate visit. Calico was well stocked with toys and games, and my two-year-old immediately went for a giant cement mixer set that would board the ferry out over my dead body. I told the kids and my mom that they could buy one toy each, and that it would have to be something we could easily take home. There was a large selection of stuffies at the front of the shop, and I strongly encouraged them to find something in that area. Our older son obligingly picked an adorable baby turtle, but his brother refused every little stuffie I offered. Instead, he found a cheap disposable pinwheel that cost $3.99. He's been obsessed with fans for about half of his life and apparently, the pinwheel counted. My brother and sister-in-law got a couple baby toys for their babies and we went on our way, all the kids happy with their loot. We've been home for over a week and the baby turtle, now named Baby Turtle, has a place of honor in our five-year-old's bed. The pinwheel pops up in random spots in our house, sometimes waved with aggression in front of our faces. I liked Calico Toy Shoppe and would definitely shop there if I lived on Bainbridge Island. (I don't think I saw anything made of cotton, bamboo, or polyester fibers, but ask the shop! This isn't my craft.) There was a cute card catalog repurposed to hold variously sized US needles in the back of the store. There was a small column that held other needles and notions, like curved needles, row counters, row enders, etc. (Clearly this is not my craft, but I'm trying to articulate...) As you enter on the right, there's a large banquet table and a selection of pattern books. (On a table near check out there were a small handful of knitting and crochet magazines.) I presume that they either hold classes or invite people to actively knit and crochet over here. For those with accessibility challenges, this had one of the roomiest layouts of any store that I saw in Bainbridge. I believe the entrance had no stairs and there was a small parking lot in front of the store... perhaps at most 100 feet of walking. It was charming. I really wish this were my craft or that I had my sister's project needs so I could have shopped on her behalf.

Many project examples are left on display for you to touch and interact with, and they were all labeled with exact details of what is needed -- all very inspiring and aspirational. The yarn and book selection all seemed very high quality and wonderfully curated, very modern and yet timeless and beautiful. They even have regular classes and also craft hours where people can come in and do any sort of crafting. Will definitely stop by again next time I'm on the island!
