Called up, I was in the chair in 45 minutes. Nick is an artist. Meticulous, friendly, loves his work, and 100% knows what he's doing. Nick checked in on me a few times to talk about either trimming more, or cleaning something up before jumping in. I would give this place 5 stars if not for the disorganized, and sometimes chaotic waits. There is no good time to go here; anytime you walk in you're guaranteed to have 20 bros waiting in front of you. There is no system that's enforced to determine who is first in line, so you find yourself jockeying with all the bros who come in after you, who by the way, not satisfied with the wait, are always trying to cut you in line. Don't get me wrong, the haircuts are top notch, and if not for the unpleasant wait experience, I would go here every time. But nobody wants to wait 1+ hours for a haircut, only to have some dude who just walked in off the street cut you in line. They do allow you to reserve a spot online; however, you get charged $5 extra for this convenience-no thank you! When someone doesn't put a lot into a haircut why should I put effort into a review? Can't make an appointment so it's kinda a cluster "****". The guys there seem like good dudes but my guy had no idea what he was doing with scissors. Great shape up but when it came to my hair on top he was lost. I asked for a half inch off the top and he took easily 1.5 inches. Very disappointed overall, heard good things about this place. These guys put the "Man" in "Man Cave". Main St. Melrose has no less than 563 salons, stylists, and haircutting businesses you can choose from as a gentleman, but only the Barber's Den welcomes you as the man you know you're capable of being. All kidding aside, as a guy I can't stand going into salons and not having the stylist actually talk to you about what style you want/like and what they are going to do before they start hacking away at my mop. These guys not only have great experience with modern yet classic hairstylings but they actually put real effort into cutting your hair. If you go to a Supercuts and ask for a fade, there's a good chance you're coming out with a bowl cut. At the Barber's Den I won't mind sitting in the chair for 20 minutes to ensure that I get a quality trim. The staff is all cool as hell too. Easy to bullshit with. Huge Bruins and local sports fans and movie buffs. Haven't ever had to wait more than a few minutes with a packed house for a chair and the guys all remember what haircut you're getting after just a couple visits. Prices are great. $17 for a cut is on par with all those discount haircut places out there. It's cash only, but they had no issue letting me walk down the street to hit the ATM after my haircut because I was sans greenbacks. Cool move. All in all, the best Men's salon in Melrose by far and if I could grow a beard that wasn't all white-trashy and Joe Dirt-esque, I'd definitely have these guys trim it up. read more

Moved to Melrose and needed to find a new barbershop. This place is money. Evan and his crew have really got a great business going here. They greet you as you walk in the door and make you feel like an old buddy. Boston sports pride decorates the interior with games and Sportscenter always on the flatscreens. I've had three different barbers in my 10+ trips in there. All do a really nice job and have their own style of cutting. Clean lines, masculine, and consistent. Michael has this awesome technique of cutting with a straight razor on a comb, adds phenomenal texture and diversity to your cut. Evan the owner will take his time and make every cut his signature. $17 for a haircut, $20 for a shave, and $32 for a combo. You really can't beat the price anywhere for the quality you get. Ok, so yo.... I am SO particular about my hair. I have an idea that a hair professional should be able to help with getting the right style based off of my ideas. Working together with what I think I might want, and what they know will look good with my fave shape, hair etc... The boys here kill it every time. I've had Andrew, Mikey, Evan, and Anthony. All of them are so chill to chat with and do an amazing job. I look forward to every trip here. Word of the wise: Plan on waiting. Stop in, either grab a number, or just pay attention to who is front of you/who comes in after you. Bring a book or something and give yourself plenty of time so you don't get stressed. 2 week maintenance cut gone wrong... I travel for work so I have to try new places on a bi-weekly basis. First timer at this shop. There was no wait on a Wednesday at 12:00 PM. The workstation was dirty despite not being busy. The photo on Yelp shows a seat with a washing sink at each station, that is no longer the case. The photo needs to be updated. I had a flight to catch so I went in the restroom to wash up. Not ideal. The younger male closest to the restroom cut my hair. What I came in with: - mid-fade 3.5 on the sides - Slightly round transition from side to top (2 weeks since last haircut) - 2" on top length from front to back - Straight sideburns down to middle of ear What I asked for: - 2 mid-fade on sides - Straight transition from side to top - Trim edges on top - Square back What I received: - 2 high and tight on sides - Very round transition from side to top - Uneven top length (1.5" in front and 1/2" in back) - Sideburns cut to top of ear with left side uneven The cut lacked attention to detail. I do not understand the perfect rating listed on Yelp. I would have been better off going to a Great Clips or Super Cuts which I haven't been to in 8 years. read more

Jesse cut my hair and Evan cut Andy's hair. If you need to be in and out quickly, Evan is by far the fastest. Again, the prices are reasonable, the service is great, and the place has a cool vibe. They do a consistent and excellent job cut wise. No complaints there. I do wish they were more organized to provide a quicker and efficient walk-in service. Reservations are not accepted. It's first come - first acknowledged service. Not very noticeable in the front corner of the shop is a ticket tape which doesn't work as a system because only 1 or 2 people will ever notice it and actually take a ticket while the other 6 people who've already been waiting a half an hour didn't notice it and don't have a ticket. Typically, you try to keep track of who was there before you and pay attention, because the next open Barber will turn around and ask "Who's next?". While maintaining honesty, and paying attention, you say "He is..." or you can stand up quickly and "I am.." Who knows for sure. There is almost always at least 6 people waiting. Often more, along with the occasional parent with a group of sons or what seems like an entire little league team. Great cuts, just need more efficient service for those that have to get back to work. read more

Waited about an hour and fifteen mins, but it was completely understandable since the holiday weekend is coming up and everyone had to get their fade on. I was trying to track down my old barber Jesse, I heard he was cutting hair at Barber's Den. Well I didn't find Jesse, but I found two really talented guys, "Mike and Sean". The first haircut I had was with the owner and it was exactly what I was looking for. The next time I went I got another person and he had no attention to detail. When I left, I realized my sideburns were not even and I had to fix them myself which is just sloppy. Then I had the worst razor burn I have ever had from him shaving my neck which has never happened before from other barbers. The inability to make a reservation is annoying and many people don't seem to take a ticket when they walk in. I was there before one guy but he knew one of the barbers so he was called next. The bottom line is if I could make a reservation and choose who would cut my hair, this would definitely be a 5 star place but I'm not going to take that chance every time I need a haircut. read more

Not a bad place. Gets pretty crowded with long waits at times but thats expected. Thing is, they dont have a system of order for who's turn it is for a haircut. You can pull a number but they dont use them! So you have to basically remember who is next and make sure someone doesn't try to cut you. That can be a pain when 10-15 people are waiting. Pretty good haircuts but that depends on the barber you get. All in all it's my go to place but the free for all system can be annoying. Wish they used the numbers or a sign in sheet. read more

Upon a recommendation I tried Barbers Den, first I felt 10 again like going to the barber shop with my dad an old fashioned guys barber shop. Every time I have been there I got a great cut and shave, the music is always Great, every guy in there is truly a professional, the conversation is so random from sports , politics, music,or last nights date,and everyone in there has an opinion and voices it.
