Best workout for core strength. I went on a yoga retreat and because of barre I was able to do handstands / inversions and arm balances. It's a fun community here. Also the exercises are safe. The more you do the, the harder the exercises get because you're going against your own body strength. My only complaint is I would like more restorative :)

New to Barre and they made it so painless! Everyone has been extremely helpful and the class was awesome. I finally found my local studio...

I received a gift card here and purchased the month-long unlimited-class membership for $89 after spraining my ankle pretty severely during a marathon. They were running a promo at the time--I believe it is usually closer to $159/169. I have tried barre before through Pure Barre and had a difficult time with it. I felt like I wasn't doing the exercises correctly, wasn't getting a good workout out of it, and was possibly even injuring myself. I was also cramping a lot during the exercises! I've now been going to Bar Method for 2-3 weeks, and I can confidently say I feel completely differently about this studio. They really focus on form and preventing injury here. The instructors give detailed verbal instruction, demonstrate exercises, and are extremely personable. On my first day here and every day since then (I've only missed one day so far), the instructors learned my name and always greet me by name when I come in. During class, it helps immensely that they refer to me by name if they give verbal adjustments, though they oftentimes will also come up to me to help me reposition! I am no longer cramping throughout class, and I am definitely working up a sweat and trembling with all the isometric and tiny movements (they also have classes that focus on more cardio-intensive, big movements, as well as ones with more stretching incorporated). Classes range between 45 and 60 minutes, and they have locker rooms, changing rooms, bathrooms, and showers on site. There are maybe 10-15 parking spots out front, but when classes are packed (27 max), you'll have to park on the street or in a lot out back (unsure if this is actually reserved for Bar Method). I've really enjoyed my time here and think the community is really kind and tight-knit. I feel like I've built a lot of strength in muscles I'm not used to using, rehabbed my ankle and increased stability in it, and increased both my balance and flexibility. No phones in class so I don't have pictures of the interior of the room, but it is quite nice! It does feel a bit cramped with 27 people (would prefer to see a limit of 20), but there is ample bar space and more than enough weights, mini-mats, and risers to go around. Oh, and when you join, you get a stamp card for a free pair of sticky socks after completing 12 classes!

Wonderful community and workout! Such fun themed classes on special occasions like May the Fourth and clean studio and common areas/locker room! The workout itself ranges from beginner to advanced with a variety of class formats available and awesome instructors to walk you through the moves and encourage!

This review is cumulative for the two classes I've taken here. The stuff that these people teach seems to be deep-rooted. The instructors here take great care to ensure proper posture/back support. My recent "express" class wasn't easy to follow, so I emulated the postures of the other athletes around me. Overall, I have had positive experiences.

I have also been taking livestream classes from Define from my home during the pandemic. The classes are a good price ($12) compared the in-studio ones, and there are offerings from 5:30 AM to 7:00 PM, across all types of workouts. The studios are renting equipment for people who do not have that at home. However, since I am several states away, I am already set up with what I have here. I have taken bounce and body classes via livestream and the sound quality is great. There are one or two instructors on zoom, and one is cueing while another is demo-ing. I was also able to take two free classes (one body and one bounce) with the founder, Henry Richardson. I actually was able to talk to him both times before he started the class and he was so nice. My friend joined the bounce class and enjoyed his calm but motivating energy. If livestream continues as some studios open up, I will continue to take them from Kansas.

I had to ask her how to use the lockers, which had combination locks that didn't even work. I tried two different lockers already. Safe to say, I just brought my handbag into the cycling room because I couldn't trust the security of my things. The spin instructor was not very welcoming either. I had to set up my own stationary bike seat level, and I would've liked a little bit more help to make sure I was comfortable before starting the workout. I mean, the class was only 50% full. Once I did get started, the workout was challenging only because I kept the resistance on my bike up. Otherwise, the instructor was pretty lukewarm with her enthusiasm during the workout. Also, what the heck is up with the dimmed lighting?! I mean, if we were doing yoga or meditation, I get it. But, an intense cardio workout? I couldn't even see some of the moves she was telling me to do, to be honest. The lights should've just stayed on. Even then, the workout music was playing even louder than the instructor was talking. So, I barely knew what she was saying too. I don't feel there was effective communication at all. I wish the workout music was more upbeat as well. I mean, at one point, Ed Sheeran's song, "Perfect" started playing. I was like, wth? There were only women in the room. Awkward. Otherwise, the facility is very clean. They have a bathroom next to the changing rooms. They have automatic hand sanitizers and a water dispensing station. Also, they did give me a free pair of rental shoes for the spin class because it was my first time here. So, that was nice. I don't know that I'd be back, though, just because the customer service was not great, and the workout was not very inspiring.

No, they don't have multiple classes running every hour of the day in multiple studios. But Met Dance has been around for a long time (they're celebrating their 30th anniversary this year) and it is obvious that they are an integral part of Houston's dance heritage. I have never taken a class here where I felt judged by my skill, my body, my outfit, or anything else. All of the instructors I have taken class with (mainly the ballet instructors) are amazing and each have their own unique strengths, so you really cannot go wrong with any or all of them. Roberta is an efficient instructor who runs a solid class; Alisa is great for beginners as she is thorough with breaking down steps; Michelle is kind and encouraging; Dominique is lovely and gives the BEST grand allegro combinations; Pattie is an absolute queen and strikes a great balance between perfecting your technique while also developing you're a artistry. Michelle and Pattie also run pointe classes for adults who are interested in getting on pointe, and all of the instructors I've taken class with are agreeable to me doing barre en pointe since the pointe classes don't fit in my schedule. Most of them are beg or beg/int classes, but the instructors trust you to modify as needed. Last but not least, the community at Met is incredible. The instructors remember your name, your story, and welcome you warmly every time. I'm glad to have found this dance family in Houston :)

Then I went rock climbing with some of my friends who are yoga teachers. And they climbed those rocks like monkeys. Me? You could say I was more of an elephant trying to clamber up a steep hill. I made a resolution to do more yoga. Robert Boustany developed the Pralaya Yoga System to help develop maximum functional strength. The instructors excel at isolating the parts of the body that require most attention and working through exercises with you to strengthen them. The studio is one room, usually flooded with soft natural light. It's in the Montrose area, serene and beautiful for practice. The instructor made me feel at ease. Unlike other yoga studios where you start to feel like it's a fashion and flexibility competition, Pralaya makes you feel like you are there for your body and mind. And isn't that what yoga is all about? The instructors don't take themselves too seriously, and there are moments when you have to just laugh at frustration about the challenge- in a good way. I won't divulge the powerful secrets of Pralaya yoga, but after my first and second classes quietly and resolutely kicked my a$$, i lay on the ground in savasana and felt restored. My back felt happier, my mind felt peace. Even my fingers and toes felt like they were smiling. FYI- This isn't your typical vinyasa or hatha class. Expect to work hard on strength training and flexibility in muscles you didn't even know you had.

The floor people were doing a lot of squats, bodyweight & weight lifting exercises. Then every few minutes the people on the treadmill would switch to the floor and vice versa.
