Is this really MTV's Moon Man?…read more Yes, this giant, silver astronaut made of Styrofoam and holding an American flag was built for MTV and is safely locked inside the backlot at Acme Industrial Surplus in Sanford. The 15-foot styrofoam astronaut has been towering over this business's fence for several years and has been providing photo-ops for roadside attraction seekers or those by happenstance catch a glimpse of him. He first appeared at the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards in Miami this event was notable because it was the first time the ceremony was held outside of New York City and Los Angeles and just to make you feel old, OutKast took home Video of the Year for "Hey Ya". MTV was launched on August 1, 1981, the original purpose of the channel was to play music videos guided by television personalities known as "video jockeys," (VJs) it's oblivious this format was abandoned about the same time "Moon Man" was given a life sentence to rot and decay in this company's bone-yard..... but not to worry you have plenty of time to get here and check it out, although Styrofoam breaks into pieces easily, it takes about 500 years for one styrofoam cup to dissolve, so Moon Man isn't going anywhere soon, that's unless the current owner decides to take him to a landfill, that's some responsibility now since the whole world is watching.

This is not something you need to see while in Sanford. It's located in an unidentified metal yard. And once you actually locate the Moon Man there is no place to park and admire him. The best view of him is from a round about off the highway that you can't park or stop in. Overall, disappointing and a little terrifying. Even at 1 in the afternoon.

It does have lots of cool old buildings, some unusual stuff and some cool new things like an impressive library. The library was built about ten years ago but looks like it has been here for a long, long time. Just kind of blends in so well with the surrounding area and is ascetically so pleasant to look at. The cool design, architecture and porch has a very small town welcoming feel that is completely different from the usual recently built, functional, but ascetically boring libraries that are so typical in this part of Florida. This library looks like it would be quite at home in some small New England town or island. The inside of the library is comfy but certainly not roomy. It does manage to fit all the modern conveniences like computers, periodicals, DVDs and of course a nice collection of books. Definitely has a pragmatic side to it's wonderful aesthetics. Best of all it has a huge bulletin board that lists all the local events and programs. A great place to keep track of what's going on in this quirky little town. The librarians I met were patient, friendly and sweet, every though the library was crowded and they were probably wondering why the hell I was asking all these stupid questions. One of them took the time to tell me the story about how all the books were moved from the old library next door. They just formed a human chain and handed the books, one by one, to the new building. Something that would have been very cool to watch. The Lake Helen library is certainly not the largest or most useful library around. However it definitely one of the coolest and welcoming.

The exterior looks like a fresh renovation of an old house and inside there are modern lighting and window touches. The library operationally functions well. Books selections are a little light but take advantage of the county wide borrwing policies to flesh out any missing items. Digital options are many starting with Overdrive, Axis360 and Freading for books and a really nice addition via the Zinio app to read a large selection of digital magazines that normally have to be paid for. After inspection, this is a great library that packs a lot of punch in a small package. Wise use of space and providing media that people will actually use instead of accumulating junk helps this library thrive.

The Port Orange library is, unfortunately, the noisiest library I have ever visited. What should be…read morea quiet and welcoming space for reading, studying, and reflection has instead become disruptive and distracting. After raising my concerns with staff, I was told. 'That's the way it is now". For a public library, and institution meant to foster learning and concentration, this response was disappointing. Libraries should uphold their role as sanctuaries of peace and focus, not places where noise is normalized. I hope leadership will reconsider how the environment is managed so that patrons can once again enjoy the quiet, respectful atmosphere that a library is meant to provide.

Although a little off the beaten path I have driven through this neighborhood a number of times and today I decided to stop and take a closer look. It's relatively easy to find but one should obey the speed limit and show some respect. Located in the middle of the street on a tiny tree and flower filled dirt island on Canova Drive in New Smyrna Beach, the memorial is dedicated to Charles Dummett, a teenager who died in 1860. The Historic Account The son of Douglas D. Dummett, a landowner, and Leandra "Anna" Fernandez, Charles Dummett died when he was just 15 years old. While the exact cause of his death remains a mystery, most accounts attribute it to a hunting accident. The elder Dummett was said to be so saddened by the loss of his son that he built the young man's grave right where his body was found. It's remained there ever since. In the 1950s, developers who were working in the area decided to build a road around the memorial instead of embarking on the long legal process of getting permission to move it. According to a 2019 article in the Daytona Beach News Journal, an anonymous artist added a statue of a dog to the gravesite and on most days there are still fresh flowers laid on the tomb...

Don't let the fact that this library is small deter you from visiting. Because this is a part of the VCPL System you need not worry that they may not have the book, audio book or other item(s) you may be looking for. The staff can request the item(s) you're looking for to be routed here from 1 of the other libraries in the system. They will also be more than happy to show you how to make your own requests both at the library and online. Because I live less than 2 miles from this library, it is my primary library within the VCPL System. In fact, I'm here this morning because 2 books I reserved online arrived and I came to check them out. This library, as well as the others in the VCPL System each have their own schedule of events for all ages. The WiFi can be a little tricky as it cut out twice while I was writing this review but that could be a rare thing specific to this day. Overall, I would most definitely recommend people in Orange City to visit and support their local library. One thing I'll add for the benefit of those reading who may need to speak with a Social Worker, VCPL System has a Social Worker in the Library Program. I don't believe the Social Worker meets at this specific location but I do know the Deland branch (and others) do have Social Workers regularly. Books and art…read more The Deland Library is a sleek and modern looking library that is exceptional well organized but still remains aesthetical interesting and attractive. Most libraries in Central Florida tend to be relatively new but frequently just look like big boxes that happen to hold books and computers. The Deland Library was definitely designed to be more than just storage for a bunch of books. The library has a very nice exterior with palm trees all around and the inside is spacious and uses natural light very well. Some great old photos of Deland are scatter around as well as some interesting and eclectic sculptures. The library has a very impressive genealogy and local history room and some interesting programs for both adults and kids. The staff were very pleasant and friendly and one of them even gave us a tour of their wonderful library A very nicely designed branch library that manages to do the usually libraries tasks extremely well without forgetting that there is more to a great library than just a bunch of books.
