Not only is a it a beautiful and historic place to visit, but we had the good fortune to come upon Tealicious Tea Room, on Elvet Bridge. Already busy as we entered even though it was within the last hour of opening that day, we were lucky enough to find a table, so we sat down and had a read of the menu. The decor is simple and classic, the perfect understated tea room. We read the menu and a friendly smiling staff member came over to take our order. We chose to go for a high tea for two, but were told that as it was near the end of the day, all of the scones had sold out (I'm not surprised), but instead offered us a toasted teacake, which was just as good if you ask me. For our tea I chose vanilla Earl Grey, and my partner chose the house blend. The tea was brought first, and as expected, was of a superb quality, and very enjoyable indeed. Our high tea came not long after, and we were surprised, as we this high tea was presented on a traditional cake stand, more akin to a traditional Afternoon Tea. We most certainly did not complain! The bottom tier started us with our sandwich choices, we chose roast ham on brown, and regional cheese and chutney, also on brown. These came with side sauces of a very tasty mustard mayonnaise, and the chutney mentioned, as well as some crisps. The centre tier was taken up by two giant slabs of cake! Real big boy sizes! My partner chose a mixed berry cake, and although I was greatly tempted by a salted caramel cake, I opted for a lemon Victoria sponge. The sandwiches were very enjoyable, and the cakes were absolutely delicious! Wonderfully moist and flavourful, but never becoming sickly or too much. The top tier for now simply had jam and cream on it, as our friendly member of staff told us just to give her a nod when we were ready for our toasted teacake, so we could still have it warm. I didn't get a photo of it, but it was huge, and wonderfully light and tasty. We really enjoyed this impromptu little visit to Tealicious, and we appreciate that although they were busy and it was nearing closing, we never felt rushed or that we were a bother. The staff were friendly, polite, and helpful, and made us feel welcome. Whenever we next venture to Durham, we will definitely be returning to Tealicious!

You know when you've been sightseeing and touring all day and you're really down for dinner and all…read morethe places you had bookmarked to eat at didn't impress your friends so you end up walking up and down the streets and find a restaurant that you all love? That was La Spaghettata :) The four of us went for dinner and were seated right away with menus. We all decided on pastas (Pasta cooked with vodka, fettuccine with flakes of smoked salmon, and gnocchi with peas) and one of us got baked salmon (which also came with pasta....carb party!). A calamari appetizer was ordered and although I didn't have any, it heard it was nice and light despite being fried. A number of waiters kept coming to our section and looking at us and we couldn't really figure out why until one of us asked us if we were ready for our main course (who would've thought! I thought it was cute). The food then came right away. For the prices paid for the pastas (7.50 pounds which is around 14 dollars), the portions were very very good; i was stuffed and couldn't finish mine! Also they're very generous with their own.....ask them for a glass of red wine and you'll get a full glass.....a bit odd lol. Also, all pastas and pizzas come with a salad but we didn't know until we finished out food (there's a self serve salad bar on the other side of the restaurant) This is probably a personal opinion, but there is nothing I love more than going to a restaurant that radiates with culture. Minus the mainstream music, the decorations and Italian waiters and cooks really did it for me. Everyone was so sweet and kind. Come and eat, you won't be disappointed. **Just for all my fellow carbaholics out there.........they have spaghetti pizza. YUP, you read that correctly. Pizza with spaghetti on top. Carbs galore!**

These were excellent - 5 stars. We got excellent oysters to start. Dessert was the Christmas pudding baked Alaska, also excellent. We had a nice wine. Service was excellent, friendly and efficient. The ambience and decor are nice, with an attractive main dining area plus an atmospheric, more intimate space downstairs in the stone-lined cellar, where we ate. It is in the heart of the Bailey, the historic core of Durham.

The quality was first class, though there was a sense of wondering if and when the spuds would arrive. I'm just glad that I didn't order the rhubarb dessert, having seen what my neighbour had on his plate. My baked Alaska wasn't much bigger though. Some of us were discussing stopping for chips on the way back to the hotel on the outskirts of Durham but that never happened as we were block-booked for taxis. I've given 4 stars overall. That's really 5 stars for quality and somewhere between 2 and 3 for quantity. My drink was Tailgate Peanut Butter Stout, which I just had to try when I heard of it. I liked it enough to have a second one but had already ordered it when I heard that they also had a salted caramel stout. I think I would have ordered that if I had known in time but 3 beers would have been a bit much.

We visited during the Xmas to New Year respite looking for something tasty and filling on a cold day. The lunch menu had all the usual pastas and pizzas offered with starter for £7.99 ($10). We chose the tomato soup and mushrooms in garlic. My soup was pretty disappointing, thin and bitter tasting but mushrooms were good. I chose a bolognese sauce for pasta, while others in party had pasta arrabiata, pepperoni pizza and chicken Kiev. Unfortunately the pasta sauces were not good, my Bolognese looked great but had little taste. The Arrabiata lacked depth of flavor also other than being doused in chili powder and in both cases the pasta was over-cooked and did not taste freshly made. However chicken was good and the chunky chips were the best part. Pizza was bare and devoid of toppings but dough was good. Decor is a little quirky and looks like an attempt to hang an Italian farmhouse skin on a British pub skeleton. However, the reason I give it 3 stars is that it's the type of cost effective, kid friendly place that serves a need, just not mine!
