The Baker's Loaf is one of Johnstown's little gems, which is a full fledged bakery with some of the best tasting breads, pastries, bagels, cheesecakes and cookies you will ever try and it is a full service deli featuring Boar's Head meats and cheeses which are sliced to order. The aromas are tantalizing and if I could bottle the air and have it piped into my home, I would be as fat as a cow just thinking about this place. There are plenty of tables to sit down and have breakfast or lunch, but they do have a lot of traffic with it being located directly across the street from the only hospital in town. With my mom and brother being in and out of the hospital over the past few years I got to sample quite a few goodies. To start, their freshly made breads and rolls are the crown jewel of the sandwiches and when they fill the bread, they are not the least bit shy, layering chunky homemade chicken salad, piling high with shaved ham, turkey, pastrami, corned beef, roast beef, tuna, grilled chicken and a vast selection of cheeses and everything is made to order, so it can take a bit of time, but it is so well worth it. I tend to get stuck on one thing that I try and stick with it, but watching them make all of the different sandwiches helps to encourage you to move on to the next. Their bagels are as good as any I have had in NYC and toasted hot and slathered with jelly and cream cheese was the way I went, I love the breakfast wrap, filled with scrambled eggs, sliced ham, peppers, onions and Jack cheese, which comes with fresh fruit salad and juice. I never left empty handed, buying freshly baked muffins, cookies and pastries to share. They have so many choices for sandwiches, wraps and salads, my favorite breads are the French Parisian, the Italian forcaccia, rye and the sour dough botard, but the list goes on and on with many whole grain breads, marbled breads and pumpernickel. They make an awesome Reuben with very lean corned beef, I love the pastrami sandwich, which can be served warm with spicy mustard and Swiss cheese melting all through it, yum! My very favorites were the lean roast beef with bacon, lettuce tomato and horseradish on Italian bread and the prosciutto caprese which has layers of prosciutto ham, fresh mozzarella and tomato with vinaigrette dressing on an Italian bread. Oh and I can't forget to mention they make various muffalettas, including a grilled vegetarian one. They open at 6:00am, Monday through Friday, open at 8:00am on Saturday and close at 4:00pm, closed Sundays. This seemed to become our gathering place when we needed a break and our tummies were rumbling, I would venture to say that we tried almost everything on the menu, I do know that my brother was hooked on their Philly cheesesteak wrap and I still need to give that one a try. Don't forget to ask about their boxed lunches, a half sandwich with a side salad, fruit, pasta, drink, although they have various combinations, but it's a great deal and they do catering trays and gift baskets. Although the cafeteria food at the hospital is not too bad, this is a thousand times better and the cost is comparable, not to mention it is a breath of fresh air.

This is such a cute little place. I always eat here when I have work training. Super cute little sandwich ideas on fresh breads.

Made arrangements with Balance owner and staff to stay "open" for our team. We pre-ordered our entrees and apps so when we arrived our food orders were already underway. Had drink orders taken and within minutes our drinks and appetizers were served. We had the place to ourselves with a wonderful waiter, Trenton, his assistant, a bartender, chef Dallas and his wife who owns the establishment but I cannot remember her name. First and foremost, the menu is awesome, diverse, unique and wide ranging. Prices are very reasonable and portions very good. The really reason to return is the taste. 12 guys had 6 or 7 different dishes and everyone raved at how good their choice was. Drinks were excellent and complimentary dessert samplings were awesome. The service was excellent, we were treated like special. My hats off to them for wanting to stay "open"; the restaurant closed to the public at 9:30 and serve us. Granted, it was a pretty good bill but I had called another restaurant in the area explaining our situation and they turned us down. I believe our proprietor asked her staff if they wanted to oblige us and she told me that their reply was something along the lines of "we're going to be here anyway cleaning up, why not make some money." Please, if you're in town or even close, give Balance a try, I guarantee you will be glad you did. Thanks again to all the staff at Balance for making our dinner together as a team a memorable and satisfying event!

So not to jump past the details... but overall Balance was just ok. It is a place I'd try again…read morebecause I feel like it has potential and maybe it was an off night. When I found them online I was jazzed about the menu. They have a lot of unique options which I'm a huge fan of. It's always easy to find basic menus, so to find something fun that also offered a kids menu (meaning, cool... I don't need to worry about taking my humans even though they'll be ordering off the regular menu) was promising. The space itself is funky in a good way and spacious. It spans a few different rooms which all have their own vibe, and we saw igloos outside! I'd say our food had a 60/40 success rate. The hummus was seriously awesome, as was the risotto. My protein power bowl was so tasty with a great dressing and I absolutely love that they have creative vegetarian options. Our server was so kind, but I'm not quite sure where they were for most of our visit. Again... maybe an off night. We'd try it again. If you're someone who needs a changing table, they have one!

I'm going to be honest, I have drove past this unassuming building in Johnstown for years without…read moreeven knowing it wasn't deserted, but that it was diamond in the rough. In this part of Johnstown, it definitely is a rough area. Parking is either on street or across the street in a gravel parking lot beneath a billboard. If you do park in that lot, do be carful crossing the street as it can be a busy one. Plus there is a slight curve that a driver might not see you while your rush across the street. Once inside you can tell that it lives up to the bar and grill in its name. It has this look inside that gives off this 80s dining vibe. One that calls back to those eateries once found in the mall. You know, those ones where it's almost too dark to see yourself let alone the menu. One where it is very dark wood, heavy on the brick, and all things that make you feel like your in and old time inn. Once settled at a table, we had our menus in hand and were given some time to look them over. Our server came back, took our drink orders and left us for a few more minutes to finalize our decisions considering the menu. Once we decided orders were place and we just waited for our food to come out. It gave us time to look around the place and take in our surroundings. When we first got here, there weren't many people. As we ordered, there were more and more customers that came in. Filling up the tables and making it feel warmer. We were in the midst of conversation and our food came out. I ordered the Franklin Street Bar & Grill Famous Meatloaf. This comes with a slice of the thickest homemade meatloaf I have ever seen. Plopped on top of a pile of mashed potatoes then topped with fried onion rings and smothered in brown gravy. This thing, even though not exactly as described and pictured, was delicious. Not sure if it is fame worthy as I have never heard of it, but hey, I will make sure to remember this when in the area again. To note, entrees are served with your choice of soup, salad, or applesauce, and comes with a homemade dinner roll. The service here is stellar. They all go out of their way to make you feel welcomed and their memory is like a vice grip. One thing you do need to keep on your toes about here, watch your step. With the dimness and small step ups, it would be easy to trip. They do have signs everywhere, but they can be hard to spot if you aren't aware of your surroundings.

Unfortunately, our experience was very disappointing. We sat at the bar for quite a while before…read moreanyone acknowledged or greeted us, even though the restaurant was not busy at the time. While we were eating, several staff members were having loud and inappropriate conversations with each around the bar area, which made the atmosphere uncomfortable and unprofessional. The most concerning issue was with the food allergy handling. A friend in our group has celiac and clearly informed the waitress that he needed gluten-free food. He was told that both the wings and fries were gluten free, but after eating, he became severely sick, indicating there was likely gluten contamination or misinformation about the menu items. For someone with celiac, this is a serious health issue and should be treated with much greater care and attention. Overall, the service, professionalism, and allergy awareness were far below expectations. I hope the restaurant takes these concerns seriously and improves staff training and food safety practices moving forward.
