I've lived in Alaska for over 10 years and have been on several fishing charters, but I've never been on one where both the captain and deckhands worked so relentlessly to give their guests the best possible chance at catching fish. On many charters, you'll hear, "This is fishing, and sometimes they just don't cooperate." That's absolutely true, and I understand that patience is part of targeting larger halibut. What set this trip apart was the dedication of Captain Butters and his crew. Seeing the captain himself up at midnight chumming and soaking lines to improve our odds was something I've never experienced. He wasn't satisfied with us catching a couple of small "chickens"--he wanted to help create memories. Thanks to that extra effort, the last two halibut we landed became fish that my family members, who traveled all the way to Alaska for this trip, will never forget. The team at Crazy Rays is first-class, and their commitment to their guests is obvious. They genuinely care about providing the best experience possible, and it shows in everything they do. Fishing Experience what it comes down to is a Minimalist as you described in your email by checking the boxes vs Maximumizing the experience which is my goal. I take 10 to 15 Fishing Charters per year all over North America, I am taking 5 this week. I don't book party charters because I want to ensure I control who I fish with, I often fish a 6 pack with only myself or 1 or 2 friends. FV ICrazy 2 was disappointing and did not measure up to expectations. 1. Mechanical Failure at 1:00pm Prop fell off the engine. Then we spent an hour looking for a spare prop and contacting you. 2. One windshield wiper working, other completely missing. All of the compartment doors are held shut with a dish rag folded over 2-1/2 times and jammed in the crack to keep the doors from falling open since none of the latches would hold the doors closed. 3. The water hose did not work, so everything had to be washed down with a bucket on a rope. 4. The bathroom door would not latch and had to be blocked so it wouldn't keep swinging open. 5. Seat back in the cabin across from the driver would not stay in place 6. And in general the boat lacked good maintenance that you would expect from a 1st class charter operation that is charging its customers premium rates for a full day of fishing. 7. Next issue, I booked a Private 6 Pack Fishing Vessel, only to be told by the captain that the boat could only handle 4 rods at a time plus it was only him no deck hand. So in reality we got a 4 pack and our catch was limited by only having 4 people fishing at any given time. 8. Next, we wasted valuable time in 2 ways, 1st we didn't depart the boat dock until 7:30am and 2nd we went on a wild goose chase scouting a waypoint for the Captains "Boss" on the way down that he never intended to fish because it was too deep, this was over an hour of time we could have been fishing. My points are we could have fished more rods earlier and limited on Halibut sooner, moved on to Rockfish sooner and limited and had time to target cod and other species to Maximize our Fishing Charter had it not been for the limitations within the control of Crazy Rays Charters. The way I see it is I got 2/3 of a Charter for 2/3 of the Time, so I should pay 44.4%. Jeff Miller

It's not all that scenic, it's pretty much a wet, muddy, mucky area with little-to-no views of the mountains. (Seriously, you'll want some serious boot/wader action to fish here) However, it is a fun place to walk to from downtown and see something different. The main novelty, of course, is that you can fish while still technically being "downtown". You can also eat at the nearby "Bridge" restaurant which used to be quite good but now is an overpriced tourist trap. If you're a tourist, you'll love it. If you're a local, don't bother.

It is…read moreconveniently connected to multiple trails and easy to access on foot from most of West Anch, Spenard, Northstar/Valley of the Moon, Midtown, and Downtown. If you've got a bike, you can connect from even further out very easily. As such, the Lagoon looks a lot like a Gilmore Girls community and is popular with people year round. There are frequently small sponsored events going on- the coolest of which involves ice skating in the winter. I personally love this park because it's a great place to bird watch. It's a fragile breeding ground for aquatic birds (take note dog owners - IT IS NOT OK TO LET YOUR DOGS OFF LEASH HERE OR LET THEM SWIM!) Red Neck Grebes are one if the more unusual arctic birds that breed here. The arctic terns also put on quite a show. Various loons and cranes also make an appearance, as well as some unique ducks. There's also an awesome playground and snack bar for the kiddies. A few years ago they also installed a bike counter that tracks the thousands that use the Tony Knowles at various intervals - it's fun to watch the numbers climb as the season goes on. There's also a free bike maintenance station here. Definitely a great location for lots and tourists alike, but parking is a problem, so carpool or better yet, use the trails!

They have private parking lots for you to park free of charge. It is located near downtown and is a welcomed break from the hustle and bustle of the city. It conveniently lies at the intersection of two of Anchorage's most popular trails, the Tony Knowles and Chester Creek trails. There were many runners traveling through while I was there, going through the two little tunnels that run under the road. You will find benches and picnic tables here to sit around the lake. This is home to lots, I mean lots, lots of waterfowl. They seemed aggressive, so I kept my distance. The disc golf course was nice but was covered in snow and mud. The lake is nice and during the winter is converted to an ice hockey/skating rink. My only complaint is that the park could be a little cleaner, even though part is that could be due to me visiting off-season. There were some maintenance guys there do some other stuff. The park is touted as a great place to bird watch in the spring and you can see other animals such as moose, beaver in the early morning or late evening, muskrats, foxes, otters, and minks, year-round, but it is rare. I did not see any of them. This nature park has a calming kind of peace to it, even though you hear the hum of cars on the nearby road. Just sitting on the bench looking out to the lake was so very soothing. If your schedule permits, I highly recommend visiting this place to just relax and recharge.

In the past I've only hit this trail to go to peak two for skiing, but recently went to Rabbit Lake on the most perfect day possible. Got great photos of the Suicides, waded in the lake, and wallowed on the grass. One regret is that I didn't get a pano shot. I'm like queen of the panos, what the heck? There were a few people tenting it, making it a perfect amateur backpacking adventure. Will come again and may pack a picnic.

Unless you really know what you're doing, don't go past the gate in the winter or this could be you!

Sudevi was on time and super cheerful. She is very knowledgable and kept the hike easy for most of the way keeping in mind that my sister just biked 4500 miles from Austin 2 days before. My mom is a botanist so she got to explore her flowers and plants, I like mountains so we got some nice shots. I would highly recommend Sudevi and her company. She was equipped with water and snacks, what else can you ask for.

He hiked us up to hidden lake, and then gave us the option to climb to the summit of The Ramp for the most breathtaking view. As a novice hiker, it was certainly a challenge, but the views at the top were spectacular. All in all, 13 miles round trip. Hiking poles, snacks and water were provided. Those poles saved my knees on the way back! I highly recommend this company. I felt I received great value.

Most fish in the rivers near anchorage are down spawning by the end of August, but for those visiting in early September (we came for Labor Day weekend) be advised that Portage Creek has a late run of salmon that you can probably still view! If you're already in the Girdwood or Portage/Whittier area, do NOT miss stopping by if this salmon are there!! If you're not sure if your timing is right, just stop by or call a local visitor center and ask! It has great viewing decks and some nice informational boards to teach about the salmon lifecycle, and also has a few miles of trails that follow the steam so you can see the salmon from various spots. Tip: Please try to stay on the trail and avoid going to the stream shore because it damages the really sensitive shoreline!

It's a non profit organization ran by Locals who grew up fishing the Kenai since they were children. Mark was so educational and knowledgeable about my fishing needs. He also explained how the Guides work and the cult of out of state guides are part of a political club essentially. I had no idea I could catch fish without having to pay thousands of dollars not to mention tips. I won't name drop however if you fish the Kenai peninsula, you truly do not need a guide. He did say Bristol bay and other fly-in camps are legit and are excellent reel guides lol. All in all I was taught how to tie fly patterns, and this place is a blessing for Alaska especially if you're visiting. Wish I could give 10 stars

Peters Creek Disc Golf Course

Located in between Anchorage and Palmer is Peters Creek DGC located just off of the Old Glenn…read moreHighway (right next to the Glenn Highway). This 18 hole course plays through heavily wooded areas with some of the holes on the back 9 playing near or along Peters Creek. This was my first and only disc golfing experience while I was up in Alaska. And one I had heard very little about as far as on DGC Review website or by word of mouth. Actually, my golfing buddy suggested I make the trek out to downtown Anchorage to play Westchester Lagoon but it's been closed during the summer due to clashes between golfers and other users of the park. Since I was staying in Palmer, I decided to give this course a try. There's two parking lots to choose from when entering the park. The closest one (near the course's bulletin board) is located near the path to hole # 1, while the other parking lot (through the gate) is closer to hole #10...so depending on where you want to start your round, parking in either of these lots will accommodate your plans. While I played early (10 AM) on a Wednesday morning the course and parking lot was pretty empty, I did do some reconnaissance the evening before on the way back from dinner in Eagle River. I noticed that the course and front lot can get crowded, especially in the summer evenings when it doesn't get remotely dark-ish until Midnight or 1 AM. A short walk from the front lot down a path into the thick forest of Birch Trees is where the tee for hole # 1 awaits. As a California disc golfer and a first time player of this course, I stood for a while trying to take in the path and overall set up for the first basket. It's not too often you play a course in California with this many trees in your line of sight. Courses in CA tend to be a bit more wide open. I can imagine this is what those on the east coast have to deal with when playing some of their heavily wooded, tight fairway courses. After the shock, I started my round...hitting a share of trees but making Par on most holes on the front 9. Aside from the trees, you have quite a few holes that tend to play extremely short (some as short as just over 150 feet) but hook hard to the right, meaning if you're not left handed, you need to have a disc you can turn over or have a decent side arm game. This course definitely forces you to break out of your normal throwing game if you want to have a shot at some birdie opportunities. Most of the front 9 plays through the maze of Birch trees, with a few holes giving the player an opportunity to power out some throws on a few open fairways (holes 4,5,6 come to mind as they play along side of a rocky hill and down what looks like a dirt fire lane path.) Hole 7 is an straight away up-hill shot with a drop off to the left side (another good hole for something understable or a side arm shot for RHBH throwers). Hole 8 proved to be one of the more exciting holes on the course for the fact it's the only downhill shot in all 18 holes. With a mandatory on the right side, it's a straight and slightly to the left 237 foot hole that could easily lead one to empty their bag because it's such a fun hole to throw on. Much like the front 9, the back has a mix of tree laden holes as well as quite a few long holes as well. You can also hear Peters Creek throughout the back 9, making the atmosphere quite relaxing. Hole 15 is likely what many consider the courses signature hole, especially since this is where we get our first sight of Peters Creek. It's the longest hole on the course (375 feet) with a long and wide fairway and a basket nestled in a grove of thick trees to the left. But BEWARE! There's a drop off beyond the basket (both behind it and to the right...where the fairway leads you) into the "creek". The "creek" runs more like a river in the summer due to the snow / glacier melt from the nearby mountains. Chances to loose a disc to the creek come into play on holes 17 and 18 as well. I finished 4 over on my first 18 and 3 over on my second 18. Not bad considering this was my first time here. Some other thoughts... - Perhaps the only reason why I didn't give this course a perfect rating is due to the fact that there are no tee pads. Some tees were muddy and unplayable (had to throw from one side or the other on some holes). This is honestly the only complaint I could come up with. - Along with tee signs at every hole, there was a garbage can attached to the tee at every hole as well. It's something we need to see more of in CA. Unfortunately I did see some trash while walking the course. Seriously??? It's fucking Alaska! Show some respect! - While there are tee signs at each hole, navigating the course could be troublesome if you fail to bring a course map with you (map can be found at the link at the top of this business page). - During the summer the mosquitoes are relentless, so be sure to bring some repellent with you. - Look out for wildlife (saw moose prints in the mud).
