The Pumping Station - Base of vases

This place should be in every guide book and on every website of Cardiff…read more The Pumping Station is a densely packed building filled with antiques and collectibles. So densely packed in fact, that a supernova of flying Hornby trains and silver spoons can be expected any day now. The drive up to this place is full of statues and garden sculpture, and always reminds me of the Narnian statues in the White Witch's palace in 'The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe'. The main hall is a Victorian building full of old fireplaces and interiors. Everywhere you look there is something new to catch your eye. With around 40 individual stalls, there is a downstairs area with sections made to resemble old-fashioned shop fronts, each with their own speciality. You might find anything from old comics to fine bone china. There is also a small cafe at the back, which, although not wonderful, is friendly and very reasonably priced. They make a good cup of tea. If you have something very specific in mind then you may need to enlist the help of a member of staff, but otherwise the main joy of this place is the browsing and discovering.

This is very recognisable and icon building thats easy to spot from the Cardiff Bay link road. I…read morefirst went when i was a child and easily bored, especially by antiques. Now as a grown up looking for unique artifacts to decorate my own place with I really love the place. It really is a treasure trove of everything that you want, from vintage clothes to reclaimed tiles. It really has the most massive selection of really unusual stuff and the old building that houses it all really adds to the atmosphere of the place. I'd probably say that because its so well known, you maybe won't get boots sale bargain finds but its a definite must visit.

On a street dotted with shops that although they're fascinating and individual, they could really…read morebe from any road in Bristol (or indeed the UK) it's refreshing to see such a well found little number. As though it has always been here this timeless little beauty is Cotham Antiques. Various shop frontages and signs about the place hold different by-lines of wind-up gramophones, unique gifts, crystals and jewellery. Not one is a lie for this shop is very diverse indeed. On one hand it could be a shop for tourists, eager to find something unique from this fair city. Yet on the other it is a veritable treasure trove for the jeweller, the gem stone healer and the student alike. Think all things fine, pretty and delicate - this is a very special place indeed.

Walk through the doors of this antique shop and you'll feel like you've gone back in time, and…read morepossibly down a rabbit hole, as everything is so small! The cabinets at the front of the shop hold what I imagine were once parts of a dollhouse - miniature tables, farmyard animals and even English dictionaries. Dotted around the store there are also several violins, including bows and cases, many of which are children's violins which are half the size of regular violins. Miniatures aside, this place is a real treasure trove and reasonably priced - I spotted an old Singer sewing machine for just £65. There are also areas for jewellery, ornaments and the odd camera accessory too. The owners know their stuff and also sell greeting cards too. I'm not sure where they get their stock from but if you're looking to sell some of your own antiques then this might be a good place to enquire.

First confusion is the sign says Staple Hill Carpets - that's moved up the road. The sheer amount…read moreof stuff that isn't carpet outside the shop should give you a hint that it is no longer stocking carpets. Second confusion, yes they have moved from one side of the road to the complete opposite side! Third confusion - surely they can't stock EVERYthing? Well yes, yes they can. Lightbulb with a vintage fitting in green? No problem sir. Skirting board tacks hand made by virgins in Argentina? Third aisle at the back. One of those squeaky balls my dog lost in the park and now he won't play with anything else? You mean this one? *squeak*

Although on both occasions I knew I had a DIY problem I needed to fix, I didn't really have a clue what I was going on about and it probably sounded like I was asking for various 'thingies' in broken English. However both times the shopkeepers have been really helpful and pointed be in the right direction straight away, the items purchased were fit for purpose and good value. On the last visit I wasn't to sure which colour thingy to go for and the shopkeeper advised me to take the ones I thought were right and bring them back and exchange for a different colour if need be. Just the sort of friendly service you want from a local hardware store! I'll definitely be returning if I need to purchase any other thingies.
