Other people here have mentioned the hardware store on one side (they mix Dulux paint which is very handy by the way) but I just want to mention the garden centre which is on the separate building across the pedestrian/cycle path (which reminds me - do note the different coloured bricks and cycle images on the floor and watch out for cycles). The garden centre is pretty well stocked for peripherals, but also has a nice selection of instant colour seasonal plants as well as some fruit and herbs for kitchen gardens. Their willows and topiary are a bit old fashioned and I would recommend going to a specialist nursery for trees (try Chew Valley Trees) but this is great for a gardening hit in town. read more

This sprawling department store feels like one giant throwback to the 1970s. The design is dowdy, come here after going to Ikea for a real shock. You'll hear very British muzak plays over the speakers, interrupted occasionally by an announce who kindly reminds you to validate your parking when paying for your goods. Quaint to the point of being weird, and also almost always completely empty. Enough of analysis of the style of the shop, I should probably tell you if it's any good. There are sections for homeware and DIY, as well as a garden centre. You can get more or less anything for the home, a few things you didn't know you needed, and a few things no-one would ever need. There's an entire row of various things for your milkman to leave the milk in, to give you an idea of the range. It's not that cheap unfortunately. I think all there costs must go on the staff (who are very helpful), of which there seem to be a greater number than there are customers most of the time. read more

An iconic building across the landscape of the flatter Temple Meads/Dings industrial area, the outside is most certainly more impressive than the inside. Gardiner Haskins is basically a big hardware and everything else store, which is now somewhat out of date. If you're looking for drill bits or saws this is a great place to go, where the staff know their stock from head to toe, but it's not the place you'd go for stylish home ware. This place is really hard to define. Is it a hardware store? A garden centre? A department store? A pharmacy? A Christmas shop? A kitchenware shop? A sandwich shop? An off licence? Answer - yes. Divided into two separate buildings, with a large onsite car park you will be surprised what you can find in this place. Set over a number of floors you'll find clothes, bikes, books, toiletries, electronics, gardenware, furniture, chocolate and sweets. They've also got an impressive selection of ciders, ales, wines and liquers. Think mead, orange flavour beer and ginger wine. All the drinks you struggle to find in supermarkets. read more

This is a hard review to write because on the one hand they sell everything you could possibly ever need but on the other hand they seem have the same stock as they did in 1984! You walk into the modern living section to find a lot of beige and pink floral sofas that even my Nan would consider old fashioned, mixed in with some real high end modern furniture and homeware. I'm pretty sure the staff have worked in there since it opened too, which means they're very knowledgable and helpful but they've also had their free bus pass for a while so don't expect anything to happen that fast! It's absolutely massive and you can literally find anything on one of the five floors; there's even a cafe with hot and cold food and drinks for a rest half way round. It's a very strange but great experience all round that no review could really sum up - you need to see this for yourself. A great hulking oddity of a shop, like something from the seventies, sits at the back of temple meads in an old brick warehouse. I went there to buy a single torch and came out laden with things I didn't need - a rather attractive rug, some value children's books, a pot plant and several bottles of discounted shampoo. This is the kind of weird selection they sell - useful, but extremely confusing! Gardiner Haskins may be considered a dinosaur by some reviewers, but they are also the ultimate store that sells virtually everything! They offer great advice too. They are the best remaining "old fashioned " store in town and with that goes knowledge, courtesy, genuine credit deals (not some astronomical settlement of interest after 6/12 months!) We buy all our stuff here, even picking up an original piece of art (which has since grown in value by 5!) Purchased with interest free credit too! It really is a "win win" store, but if you prefer being served by a sulky adolescent with no product knowledge carry on and go elsewhere! I love it! read more

Melanie is right to refer to this shop as a dinosaur. It's a relic of another age and a wonderful one at that. You feel like you're stepping back in time the moment you enter through its hallowed doors and hear the announcements over the intercom and the muzak. It sells all kinds of things from industrial workwear and bike accessories to an amazing craft supplies section, Dulux paints and a bargain basement of incredible value toiletries and booze. Then there is floor upon floor of furniture and across the street a huge garden centre stocking great value bedding plants and shrubs and a huge range of garden furniture. One of my favourite things though has to be the table of cheap seasonal chocs they sell off at incredible prices just after Christmas/ Easter has passed. read more

Between my mother & my self, in the past twelve months we have spent thousands of pounds in this store. On Monday 29/03/2010 I was taken in by there Massive television sale, a one thousand two hundred pound T V for an amazing five hundred & ninety nine pound so I bought it, only to turn on my new T V on the Friday to see the very same T V on sale at Tesco for four hundred & seventy nine pound, a massive one hundred & twenty pound cheaper. i was told about it by a friend, who said youve got to go there for bathrooms. Buildings are old but thestuff inside is modern stylish and at great prices. I bought an expensive bathroom at £230 cheaper than the best online price and that helped to pay for some of the fitting they arranged for me. They also sold me a washing machine cheaper than amazon by £63. Service was good and they all new what they were talikng about. I love the place. surprised not many people had found it. read more

Has EVERYTHING (I've gone there for incredibly obscure things and found them), the staff are wonderfully helpful and knowledgeable (unlike many places where staff will literally just have a look at the shelf to see if something you ask for exists, or read off the back of the packet when you ask a question, these guys actually know about the stuff they sell ("Ah, sounds like you need stove rope fixative, let me show you where that is", beats hours of fruitless searching in other shops)). The place is brilliantly reminiscent of an old department store (which I suppose is the best way to describe what it is), which some of the reviews here seemed to dislike, but I found very comforting and pleasant :). 5 stars to a standard of service that I previously thought belonged to a past generation and to a range of products wider than any independent shop I've ever been in before. read more

Really like the variety in this place and their garden centre is well maintained, seeming to have better choice of things like fencing than other more well-known home stores. They seem to have an enormous range of everything from beers, wines and spirits, to kichen equipment, bathrooms, electrical items and bicycles! The staff have all been very helpful and polite. I found that Gardiner Haskins was over priced for the quality of goods that they sold, although i found the staff to be very helpfull they did not seem to me to be very content in their jobs. Management were scarcely to be found when needed by myself and seemed to shy away from responsibilities when dealing with customer complaints. The store looked run down and dated and in need of a make over. Overall i was not impressed with the whole experience, i shall not be going there again !! read more

Gardinier Haskins delivery service is appalling! I bought a washing machine and during the delivery they ripped up my brand new floor. The men then left sharpish without even uttering an apology. I wrote to complain as you can't get hold of management on the phone and they have written back saying it was up to me to protect the floor. However, the floor didn't stand a chance the way they were dragging the machine around. We had moved out our old one with no problems at all. Totally uncaring, unresponsive attitude. Thumbs down! Gardiner Haskins is brilliant! An old established family firm. A rare gem in the whole country and a huge asset to Bristol. As others have said, it is huge, and you can get literally anything here for your home, from a few screws, DIY, to whole bathrooms and kitchens, living rooms, lighting, garden - even a good range of bicycles. Their range of products is quite simply amazing, and because they are independent if they haven't got it they will get it for you.They have a huge range of catalogues too. They are not the cheapest, but neither are they expensive. Walking into the shop is like entering a time warp - an old fashioned department store the likes of which don't exist anywhere else any more. You get very helpful personal service and can have your whole kitchen designed if you want. Almost all the staff are extremely knowledgeable too. It feels spacious and almost always seems empty! - yet they do tremendous business. They also have a huge car park. A vastly undervalued and under appreciated local department store. Just walking round is an experience - simply wonderful! read more
