If you follow the hidden River Peck (the one that gave Peckham its name) from its spring to the Thames, The Asylum Tavern marks a half way point. A very welcome sight on a long walk and one of the few pubs left (another one at the other end of the Green was boarded up). BTW the river is not visible, I went on a tour with Derelict London ...
I'm tempted to give the Asylum five stars just for being there, but it probably isn't quite special enough to make a dedicated trip. It's a reminder of what pubs used to be like, darts and pool table at the back, a nice homely feel without trying to hard. Hard working landlady who managed to serve three people at once without getting an order wrong, good old-fashioned service.
I hope it will still be here if I ever find myself in the area again! read more
