My wife and I were on the Ruby Princess cruise (AMAZING!) and the Asylum was right off the gangway and the bar is so cool! I think they must be sponsored by Alaskan Brewery, since you can get awesome beers for $3.50. I got some Hopothermis, just the best IPA. Super nice bartender and they have an outside patio as well if you want that. You could smoke inside, so that was a turn-off. I forgot what being in bars with smoking was like. I sure don't miss it. My wife went on an extra hike and I hung out here. Great place if you want to kill some time. They have a TON of beers on tap. read more

This is actually a great little dive bar. Being this close to the cruise ship terminal, I wasn't expecting much. They advertise $3.50 beer and I was expecting only bud and coors to be that price. However I was pleasantly surprised when every beer was that price, even the nicer craft beers. It was pleasantly dingy and grungy with plenty of locals and tourists alike. Their bathrooms had a urinal made out of a beer keg, so you can recycle the beer. They even have plenty of space inside and out, including a second floor. This is a rare place where I could not find anything wrong. read more

I see absolutely no reason why Asylum does not deserve 5 stars. We only stopped in for about 20 minutes, but they are open at 9am. The patrons were friendly, they have bathrooms, free WiFi and nice service. Outdoor attached patio, they allow smoking, so be prepared if you're a non smoker and right on your walk from your docking ship to all the best shopping. They serve food but not until 11am so feel free to grab a bite on your journey and be forewarned smoking weed is legal here, so dont be surprised if you smell some bud while in their vicinity. read more

I, like others, came here for the free wifi. It isn't exactly free, but you are given a code with a $3 drink purchase. I used the code for about 2 hours with no problem. In addition, all the beers are $3, so it easy to meet the low minimum. We sat at the bar and watch some of the world cup game with locals and cruise ship travelers. The bar itself has ample seating, but someone will sit right next to you and smoke. The bartender was nice. The beer slection features about 30 local beers. You can order food from Burger Queen next door an it will be delivered to you. You can also bring in food from any other nearby place. The bar is very typical of others bars you've been to and other bars you've forgotten. However, when you're in such a remote area the bit of generic normalcy is nice. Watch out for who I assume was the owner. They will be drunk and saying non-PC things behind the bar. While the smoking and the owner's insulting jokes weren't enough to drive us out, I will say this is the true dive bar. read more

We had a few hours off ship and found this amazing off-the-beaten path bar, The Asylum, next to the best halibut sandwich/burger place (Burger Queen.). Carlos, a Brooklyn transplant, via his wife's recipe concocted literally the best Bloody Mary ever! Met the locals: talked salmon, wolves and bears. Going to Ketchikan to spend the weekend with my best friend who lives on Prince of Wales Island. It was my birthday weekend and we decided we wanted to go out on the town hahaha Asylum was recommended to us by my girlfriend's daughter. As we approached on foot we could tell there was like music and I thought to myself how good can a cover band be in Ketchikan? Well we walked in the door discovered it was a 80's cover band and they were amazing! We didn't go upstairs and dance but it sounded very Lively up there. We enjoyed a few of the house special drinks they were very tasty. I would definitely recommend this place if you're in town and don't know where to go for an evening of music and drinks. As far as dive bars go....this place is amazing!!! The perfect mix of good beers paired with fun locals. It was someones birthday, yet he kept buying the entire bar drinks. haha. The staff was friendly and attentive. Loved that there was a pool table upstairs and outdoor seating. Also, nice that they let the Burger shack nearby deliver food and eat inside the bar. (Asylum doesn't have a kitchen or serve food). When in town stop in Asylum and have a cold one! This place doesn't disappoint. read more

Fantastic location 440 feet from Pier 2 where the Norwegian Jewel docked, so even in Ketchikan's constant rain you won't get too wet. Super friendly service ( my favorite in Alaska- Kelly) and a good choice of beers, tho heavy on Alaskan. They can put your food order in the computer, and Burger Queen next door will bring over your Halibut!! Interesting mix of locals and cruise ship folk. Perfect after returning from excursions, can wait till time to board+10 minutes like I did and still have time to snag some Smoked Salmon at Salmon Sam's for gifting those at home ! read more

Ketchikan was my favorite stop from our Alaska Cruise. This city is absolutely beautiful and the people are so nice. We stopped in the Asylum to grab some local Alaskan beer and were not disappointed. This place had a wide range of local beers on draft and the staff was very friendly and helpful with their recommendations. The atmosphere felt like a local hangout which I really appreciate especially when your traveling and trying to get a true local feeling. I highly recommend skipping the Arctic Bar across the street who misleads patrons that its beers are $3.50 when only one of their 18 beers are $3.50. There is a reason why you will see so many cruise ship crew members coming to the Asylum for beers and free Wi-Fi. Plus the owner is hilarious! read more

The entire atmosphere of this place was wonderful and the bartender was absolutely amazing. She made the best margarita (freshly squeezed limes - so good!) and the outdoor seating with access to pool tables and games was awesome. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because, coming from the restaurant industry, the fact that there was no anti-fatigue mat behind the bar was a con. As someone who manages people on their feet all day, I like feeling that the person waiting on me is taken care of and comfortable while serving. It's the little things! read more

Was there for morning of Fourth of July and had an amazing experience. Nice bartenders, nice interior, good drinks. We went later on around closing and again had a great time, great drinks, great service. As we were leaving we were getting picked up from the curb and left with a beer in our hand. As we were walking out a lady very clearly intoxicated ran from a bar across the street to Asylum and ran in. Then she ran out to us and forceable ripped the beer from my hands and after a struggle I just gave it up. She then proceeded to yell at me claiming she was the night time bartender at asylum and we couldn't drink outside. She then continued to be extremely rude and frankly talked to us in a disgusting way. I completely understand her efforts in not wanting a open beer can outside but we were making our way into our ride. All things aside if she would've nicely told us hey let's keep the drinks in the bar I would complied without any back talk. Instead she ripped a drink from my hands and talked to us in a horrible way while using her position of power as "nighttime bartender". This bar is great but very much needs a retraining for that specific bartender that 1) positive communication goes a long way. 2) don't put your hands on a customer. read more

The Asylum is NOT overrated. The Asylum would be my watering hole and my go-to if I was working a cruise ship or lived locally in Ketchikan. Atmosphere is that perfect kind of divey - non pretentious, fun, and full of regulars! I loved the music piping through this place and the cool relationship they have with Burger Queen next door, so you can always indulge in some GOOD grub if you get the munchies. It's very obvious that this establishment is owned by a local and it was very cool to get to support him by hanging out there for a few hours. Their tap list is really impressive and we indulged heavily in their Alaskan Brewing options. Prices were seriously awesome and their drink specials are incredible! Lastly, their bar staff is unbelievable! We LOVED our bartender Kellie who totally made the experience there that much more awesome. Fantastic bartender who has is as local as you can get. Some might classify this as a dive bar, but you have to realize you're in Ketchikan, not NYC or LA. We were on an Alaskan cruise in Ketchikan. While there, we asked a local where to eat and drink. SOOOOO, they pointed us to Asylum and Burger Queen. First of all, inexpensive craft beer was served, alongside some of the best burgers we've ever had. Expensive places can eat their hearts out. Pretty decent dive style bar. Upstairs game room is pretty nice, pool, foozball, some video games. Smoking allowed inside threw me for a loop, haven't seen that in awhile. Drinks were decent prices. Pretty good deal on a pitcher if I recall correctly. Try the Duck Fart shot. read more

This place would be amazing if they were just honest with peoples orders. We arrived at 10:30, waited untill 11 to ask what is happening with our burger, and then they decide to tell us that they start to make them at 11am. What he didn't consider is that half of their customers work on the cruise ship and we have a specific time when we need to be back on board, so we actually didn't take our burgers in the end.
