The Apple sailed into Bristol just at the right time, as the Magners boom was making the rest of the world (other than us hardcore west country folk) wake up the joys of passing out to cider. Set on a boat, it's quite a novelty, though in fairness when you're below deck you'd barely know it anyway (which does also tend to smell a bit feisty when it gets busy). The upstairs deck scores bigger as it's got better views and is more efficiently, er, ventilated. There's also a large court out the front which is always busy and a decent menu which is designed to go well with their huge range of ciders and perries (the ploughman's especially). A decent addition to the centre, it loses a few points for the crowds, and the fact that it always seems to be full of tourists.

I used to live just a stones throw away from The Apple which meant I was a regular! I was drawn to the huge variety of ciders on offer, which although at the time I wasn't a fan of, has solely managed to convert me to a cider lover. I especially liked the fact that it is on a boat (little things please little minds!). Downstairs can be a little claustrophobic but there is a good atmosphere and it is almost always buzzing with people. I have many good memories on a summer's night dangling my feet over the edge of the harbour with a half pint of 'Old Bristolian' in my hand....mmmm perfection!

When I first moved to Bristol and mentioned I was developing quite a fondness for the local cider, I was directed to the Apple. Needless to say, I wasn't disappointed. The range of tasty ciders is astounding!! Some of the ciders are quite strong so you have to not go overboard or you may literally fall overboard, powerful stuff! The Apple also has a good range of rum. The cheese boards here are also delectable. Cider, rum, cheese, friendly staff, atmospheric and on a boat - what's not to love!

The seating area, cider, and food trucks are all great amenities at The Apple.

Great rotation of ciders on tap and a wonderful outdoor seating area and ambiance. This is a great place to try interesting ciders and relax by the river.

You'll find The Apple moored up at the end of King Street. The phrase 'cider barge' pretty much sums it up. It's basically bar that focuses on cider that you'll find on a boat. Only in Bristol... Come here for the the famous 'Old Bristolian'. At 8.4% abv there's a reason they only sell it by the half pint. The bar staff are fun, as are the sort of crowd it gets (it seems mostly young people want to drink cider on a boat). At the moment they're running a student night Monday through Wednesday, so head down for cheap drinks (there's wine and Sailor Jerry rum on offer if cider's not your tipple). Also, be aware that the boat does tour in the summer months, so it might not be there July/August time. With tasty cider and a great atmosphere, The Apple is a good bar as well as an unusual one.

Cider in the sun. The Apple is a perfect summer evening bar, situated in the busy and highly popular Welshback area of the harbour side. They have a wide selection of ciders which are for the most part locally sourced. (the most famous of these being the Old Bristolian, which at 8% is served in half pints only) There is usually a good atmosphere on board and you can either enjoy the seated and heated street level sitting area or the sofa's on board the boat itself. But be warned. The bar on board is very small and during the summer months you will find yourself queuing for quite some time to get served. If you don't like cider then this really isn't the place to go as they don't really serve anything else. You might find they serve a few wines and bottled beers but the selection is pretty limited. This is after all a cider bar, so if it's wine and beer you're after, you might want to go someplace else.

It is situated very close to the Temple Meads train station and near the IBIS Hotel, but rather difficult to locate if you don't live around the area or already know about it. I'd suggest you google it and hunt it down because it is an awesome little pub. The feel of this pub is cosy, wooden antique-y furniture litted about the place, and a warm fire burning (if the weather is chilly). As this pub is affiliated with the Bristol Beer Factory, the ales on tap are the Beer Factory ales, like No. 7, Sunrise, Stout, Red and usually one guest ale! They are usually about £2.70 - £2.80 - pretty good. Beers on tap here are Fosters, Grolsch and the cider is a lovely fizzy Ashton Press. There is outside seating, as well as a courtyard at the back with a nice sheltered bit for when it starts raining. The food! They pride themselves on good, hearty, fresh and locally sourced food. The vegetarian lasagne and sunday roasts are my favourites here. This pub is just a lovely place to spend hours, having a quiet pint and food, with a book off their bookshelf, by the roaring fire. Loads of games are available here to play with- Downfall, Guess who?, Jenga, Chess....great for the kids and adults too. A venue always filled with the locals - it seems they have kept this pub a little secret very well indeed! Head down here and you'll love this place as much as I do. Guaranteed.

It's quite a small pub and while it lacks a decent size for big groups it makes up for it with cozy character. On entry there is a pateoed garden complete with pub benches and what looks to be a stone bake pizza oven which I guess would be great for summer. I'd chosen the Volunteer for my team at work's Christmas dinner as it was a convenient short walk from my place of work in Temple Quay (next to Temple Meads) and i'd heard great things about the quality of the food and service. We had a table of 10 which took up a large portion of the pub, the service was very friendly, can't fault the table service provided. The food was excellent. Starters consumed were pigeon, leak and onion soup and crab thermidor. The hit of the starters appeared to the the pigeon. The Christmas dinner on offer was excellent. Not just first class pigs in blankets but devils on horse back as well (prunes wrapped in bacon). My overall review of the roast on offer is that it's a no nonsense well executed roast dinner that definitely should be a consideration for a good roast in central Bristol. I played it safe for the 3rd course and went for the cheese board, which was also great. All your cheese & cracker classics accompanied with a curry style chutney, pickled onions and capers. There is a good selection of drinks on offer as well. The barman was more than happy to give some advise on the extensive range of ales on offer! All in all a great time had at the Volunteer. I'll definitely be heading back for a Sunday roast at some point and maybe see how it fairs up in the summer as well!
