It used to be a wine cellar, hence the name 'Bacchus'. I'm not sure whose idea it was to decorate it like this but it definitely works as it's always full in there. They get coach loads of tourists in-literally. Other than the decor, Bacchus is your standard pub. It's very difficult to get a seat, but when you do, you can be quite comfortable in here for an hour or so. Menus are on the table, just pick what you want and go up to the bar to order food and drinks. Both are more expensive than other pub chains but I would say the food is a bit better than those other chains. Drinks wise, they have decent ciders and beers on tap and in bottles. There's some great spirits too, including some of my favourite gins! Fish and chips, BBQ chicken, scampi etc all appear on the menu and are consistently good. I always find service very friendly and staff seem happy. I often find myself back at Bacchus as it's just such a relaxed way to spend time.

It felt nicely traditional, but not left behind keeping up with a decent range of beers, a gin menu etc. We cosied up in a pair of wingback chesterfield chairs of which their were plenty- it's nice when a place is packed which so many comfy chairs you don't have to fight over. The average price I would say is approx 15-20 pound for a three course meal and is defiantly worth it. I would recommend the Sunday lunch as its great really homecooking type feel to it. In the week though I would recommend the rack of lamb which literally melts in your mouth and the toffee and pecan pie which is naughty but so so so good!!! After a day of cleaning and cocktails on Saturday, Sunday was a day of shopping. We woke up, skipped breakfast and then proceeded to hit Tesco, CostCo and One Stop for bits and pieces for an upcoming Yelp event. By 1:30pm on Sunday afternoon, we were so hungry we could have eaten our own arms. Yelp Elite Caroline C. had suggested lunch at the Malthouse. I haven't ever been to this venue before (not actually venturing down the Birmingham Canal areas very often unless it's to head to The Flapper or as a shortcut to get to other places located off it). It's a pretty pub, smack bang on the side of the Canal (making it perfect for a waterside drink in the summer or a cosy spot in the Winter). It is a chain pub (a Taylor Walker), but that doesn't take away from it's charms. On Sunday afternoon (a glorious day) it was packed. After we had managed to locate Caroline, we perused the menu for some big food for our lunch. First thing to note, they do offer a roast on a Sunday but it's not on the menu. There are signs up which advise you of the Sunday Lunch option; but no prices (which is a little strange). On this particular day, there was only beef available which was a let down as I had a hankering for chicken. Instead, I opted for the "posh pie" (Chicken, Chardonnay and Pancetta) and grabbed a pint of Big Ben whilst I waited. The wait was not unreasonable for a busy day, but it seemed like forever as I was mega hungry and hadn't been warned of it. I would say it was around 25 minutes before we got our food. The mash, peas and gravy were spot on, but the pie was still practically frozen in the middle... This is where their customer service really shone through. I located my nearest member of staff (a lady collecting glasses) and explained and was promised a replacement meal AND a refund for my dish! I hadn't made a big fuss or expected a refund, but that seemed like a nice gesture. My replacement pie maybe took another.. 15 minutes or so and was presented with a whole new plate of mash, peas and gravy. Despite it being hotter than the sun, it was filling and delicious! Food isn't Wetherspoon's cheap at this venue, but it's not unreasonably priced. My pie was £8.65 and a pint of Big Ben was around three quid something. There was a jazz band playing in the bar who were pretty loud. It seemed they attracted a crowd of regulars, but if it were me, I would turn down the volume a little. We had to speak very loudly to have a conversation on the other side of the pub from them. The weirdest thing was that they played "Oh Christmas Tree" (in September), but other punters seemed to enjoy this. I would definitely give this venue another shot after the top customer service they showed on our visit. The food was good and it had a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It's not on my "must visit again immediately" list, but it's a nice place to sit and enjoy a drink by the waterside.

I went during the daytime, and it was fairly empty; but considering that, there's a Premier Inn right next door, so I'd imagine this pub to be very popular on evenings. Customers are fast at serving you, and the selection of alcohol at the bar is fairly diverse. I purchased a Morgan Spiced and coke for £2.50, which isn't bad. There's nothing really amazing about this pub, but it's holds a nice chilled out atmosphere; especially regarding the acoustic/folk music that the pub plays. It's much better than hearing the usual chart stuff that you find playing at most pubs nowadays!

However, there are some plus points- one being the location- it's very handy for any of the entertainment areas in the Great Park- cinema bowling etc. It has a carvery which looks a much more reasonable price. It's open very early as it serves breakfast to the Premier Inn guests, and it has a soft play around the back (extra cost). It's not huge, but good enough and you can sit at a table and order pub food and drinks. Good idea for a lazy Sunday!
