If you are in search of a Nepalese/Indian restaurant that embodies Eastern ambience, then look no…read morefurther. Kathmandu, opposite Colston Hall, offers diners an authentic Nepali/Indian experience. On entering the venue, your senses are immediately indulged: subtle aromas of burning incense, infused with rich spices, create a mystical vibe, in addition to the warm candle light and captivating Indian art, making you feel as if you are actually in India. Run by a Nepalese family who import indigenous spices from a village in their home country, the restaurant produces a diverse range of curries. My favourite is the chicken Pasanda, a dish simply oozing with creamy, yogurty goodness and unique blends of spices. You can expect to pay more than is usual for Indian cuisine, but your experience is guaranteed to make those extra pennies seem worthwhile.

I really like this restaurant. The food is good and the service impeccable. When I first walked in,…read moreI thought that the room was much bigger than it actually is, due to one of the walls consisting entirely of mirrors. They must polish these things day and night, because I was totally convinced, until I noticed one of the join lines a good few minutes later (and it wasn't just me, to note, I heard another couple say exactly the same thing as we were leaving). I must recommend the vegetable tikka massala - I know, I'm not very adventurous - but I have a policy of always judging a place by its massala. Once that test's been passed, I'm willing to come back and try something a little more exciting. I expect the staff at Kathmandu will be seeing a fair bit more of me in the coming months, then.

I don't know, but Gurkha's Inn has altered my opinion somewhat. I have no idea how Nepalese or Himalayan food differs from Indian food so if you're really snobby about that, stop reading this review as my opinion will be worthless to you. I was with some co-workers on our way back from Stonehenge on our day off and we had no idea where to eat and they were both craving Indian food. Since I was out-voted, I went with it thinking I could probably get Tandoori chicken and hopefully be fine with it. The restaurant was just opening when we arrived and although it's not a very large place, it is very comfortable and the decor makes the whole place feel warm and intimate. I think we were the first table sat and by the time our food arrived, the whole place was full! For a small town like Winchester, I was surprised, but then again, it was a Friday night. I did end up ordering the Tandoori chicken which I enjoyed immensely. I'm okay with some spice, but I don't like burning my mouth apart and this version of Tandoori was a good mix for my weak palette! My only advice if the owner is reading this... the restrooms (or I guess water closets as they say there?) are pretty gross. The floor was sticky and it didn't feel clean. Maybe bring some of the charm from the restaurant in there to clean it up? I don't know.

This is not as interesting a restaurant as one might hope. Either Nepalese and Himalayan cuisine is…read morea staid and bland cousin of its Indian counterparts or the chef has an uninspired interpretation of its traditions. Like at least one other Gurkha restaurant in Winchester, the name is a an army reference to the base in town. It's an understandable retirement plan for a Nepalese soldier serving far away from home. Unfortunately, what probably seemed wonderful cooking in the mess hasn't translated seamlessly to the more demanding kitchen of a chef. The menu choice is very wide, a weakness of most middling curry houses. There is the standard gamut of Indian classics tailored to the takeaway crowd and a surprisingly large selection of chef specialities. My unmemorable encounter with one of these (I forget which) was disappointing. My girlfriend had a lot more luck with a sizzling clay oven cooked chop of lamb. This is not a bad restaurant, if it were a little cheaper I would give it three stars. As a takeaway it will probably serve you quite adequately. It's quite possibly even the best in Winchester.

The resturant…read moreis a little dated, but it really does look as if you have been transported to a village in India so this could both be a good and/or a bad thing! The food is very good, as is the service. They treat you like royalty here which I like! Service was a little slow, but nothing really to complain about. It's not the best resturant you'll ever go to, but maybe worth a trip if you like very traditional Indian cooking.

That means no rice, no popadoms, no naan bread, and for all I know no curry either. If I'm on a cheat day though (and let's face it I often am) and deserve a special treat then this is high on my list of targets on the takeaway nirvana that is Gloucester Rd. The Natraj is certainly a well established restaurant as I'm pretty sure it was here when I moved to Bristol in the early 80s. Curries are not quite as popular as they were back then from what I can see, but the Natraj keeps on keeping on with its range of traditional Indian dishes. My current favourite is the butter chicken with boiled rice, with a naan and some cucumber raita unadventurous I know but delicious. Plus it's licensed, so you can enjoy a quick pint of Kingfisher and a scan of the Sun while you're waiting. The atmos is authentic old-school Indian restaurant, and the staff are helpful and friendly. Spot on!
