I worked with Josh to create a comprehensive landscape design for our very large backyard. Together we came up with the design my husband and I loved. His team removed tons of knot weed, old fencing, and yards of bad soil. They then went in and added yards of compost and good soil, installed the trees and bushes and edged the plant beds. Josh came back to check on the design and added and removed plants to adjust the design, and to check on the health of the plants. My husband and I are so pleased with the result and Thayer's professional work ethic. read more

Josh Oldfield is quite talented as evidenced by the fine job he did on my small side yard last year. The design was good and the plants healthy. However I will NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH THAYER NURSERY again. The reason is found over and over again in the YELP reviews. Josh does not return phone calls. Josh does not return texts. Josh does not answer emails. Josh does not show up for appointments he makes with you. Josh thinks he is a genius and therefore his rude behavior should be acceptable. Whatever talent he may have DOESN'T excuse his TOTAL INABILITY TO COMMUNICATE. If you want to avoid high blood pressure and ulcers you should stay far, far away from Josh Oldfield and Thayer Nursery. read more

STAY AWAY! Horrible contractor to do business with. Josh never returns calls, entices you with a much lower rate if paid in full up front, and doesn't stand behind his work. I paid him over $8,000 to install some large arborvitae and just over a dozen small rose bushes, and install peastone from the street to my fence line. I paid him up front because he lowers the price of his already too expensive work. That's my fault, lesson learned. Should've turned him away as soon as he mentioned that deal. Anyway I paid him and he said he would be about 3 weeks out. After 3 weeks I called to check what was going on, no answer. Over the course of next 2 weeks I called and left dozens of messages with no answer. After about 6 or 7 weeks I get a call saying they'll be there tomorrow. Through the course of the work they wanted to drive HEAVY equipment through my front yard into the back yard and I said absolutely not. I don't want my yard ruined. I left to do errands and came back couple hours later and they drove them on the lawn anyways. And I mean one of them was a big dump truck. Their answer to this was, "someone was supposed to call you and tell you, we'll fix anything we ruin after, don't worry". OK! So when the job is done, none of it is fixed. So now starts more phone calls that nobody answers and more messages that nobody returns. When they finally came back out all they did was throw dirt over their huge tire tracks, no seed. And the dirt was consistency of powder so most got blown or washed away. Then came the rain and the flooding. The dense pack underlayment under the peastone was graded incorrect. It was graded from the street down into my yard. The back of my property is now a swamp everytime it rains. That area is where I cleared out all the vegetation and put up a fence 7 weeks prior to them doing the peastone. In that 7 weeks it rained A LOT. And it didn't flood once till they did the dense pack underlay. It rained so much so that this was the excuse they gave me as to why it took 7 weeks to get to my job. So I called for weeks again leaving messages about the flooding, when Josh finally called back he said he'd look at it tomorrow and send the guys back on Saturday that week to fix it. That was over 2 weeks ago now. And I've left several dozen more messages with no answers. So needless to say I'm getting a lawyer for this one. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this company. read more

** This posting updated July 2, 2014 ** Thayer Nursery landscaped my yard October 2013, providing all services and materials. By spring, the arborvitae were dead. After persistent follow-up on my part via phone, in person, and social media, Thayer Nursery replaced 8 of the 10 original arborvitae at no cost to me. Hopefully the remaining original 2 don't merely survive, but eventually thrive. The other plants, while struggling initially this spring, perhaps because of the late planting and difficult winter, appear to be healthy and growing. These include: rohdodendron, boxwood, holly, japanese maple, blue spruce, dawn redwood, and various smaller plants. Josh is pleasant to work with. He explained that Thayer Nursery will no longer plant arborvitae green giant after October 1st based on this experience. Their previous cutoff was November 1st. This place finally made me register with Yelp so I could give it a good review. I live in a house in Cambridge with 2 fireplaces that my girlfriend and I like to use when it's cold out. With winter coming soon we've been looking for a good place where we can pick up 1/2 to a full cord of word from because having it delivered is waaaaayyy too expensive. When I called them to get prices, I spoke with a very nice lady that told me a full cord is $499 & a 1/2 cord is $399. It still seemed a little steep to me if I figured in about $80 to rent a truck to pick it all up in, but I was pleasantly surprised. If I paid for a full cord, I could then pick it up in 1/4 cord increments! That basically saves me $100 more than if I even had got it somewhere else!!! read more

What a great place to find annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees. There couldn't be a more knowledgeable group of people around, and dealing with Maggie and Josh Oldfield is always a pleasure. Absolutely the worst company I have ever dealt with. Josh is not a man of his word promises you the world when he is selling you the job once he gets your deposit game over, the chase is on. My job was over $20,000.00 in landscaping I lost 40% of the shrubs and trees that he put in and good luck trying to get him back to replace. I highly recommend NOT using this company. Do not purchase their firewood. I purchased a 1/4 cord of wood from Thayer Nursery. I assumed it would be incredible wood because it was coming from Thayer, unfortunately this was not the case. I usually buy wood at Stop and Shop or Cumberland Farms, which always burns well. I thought I would treat myself to some good wood and buy it in bulk so I didn't have to purchase wood everytime I went to the grocery store. This firewood does not catch. I always start my fire with a duraflame and then add wood. Thayer Nurseries wood smokes and ashes away, it does not catch. At best, it is an ember. I was very dissappointed. I thought the wood at Thayer wood be the best, spending an extra few bucks for a special treat. Total bummer. The wood looks beautiful, but it doesn't cut it in the least! read more

We hired them last year to install 10 mature pine trees and redo our lawn. 4 of the trees died almost immediately, and it took them over a year to honor the warranty. After 8 months of unanswered emails and calls they finally replaced those trees, but left another clearly dying one in place. As for the lawn, it never grew in and I had to threaten to take them to court before they tried to fix it. After all that, I still had Nicholls Landscaping come in and re-hydroseed. Last year, I started working with Josh Oldfield on my dream project - a complete landscape re-design and installation. I have a small, humble property but Josh and his talented team are transforming it into my happy place! This review is for Thayer's order delivery service: In an age of instantaneous mobile communication it is inexcusable for delivery service to suck as bad as I what I experienced today. I juggled my schedule to be present for a 1 to 3 pm delivery window and when I called to discover the whereabouts of my order at 3:15 the Thayer employee answering delivery phone inquiries could not have been less surprised, or apologetic in conveying the news that "the driver had just left." Seriously?! If there are extenuating circumstances and you know you're going to be late, put the bowl down and pick up the phone!! read more

I agree with some of the other reviewers. Josh is a wonderful actor when he comes to sell you and then he disappears and never returns calls. We paid him thousands of dollars and lost 1/2 of what we planted. He also planted months after the date he promised. He ignored all of our calls when we tried calling him. Do not use this company. We don't know how he can possibly stay in business with his terrible customer service and outrageous prices. read more

I wish I had read reviews before hiring this company. They deserve zero stars. Josh, the owner came across as the nicest guy when he came and gave me a quote. Don't let the smile and laugh fool you because he will walk away and turn into the most unresponsive person ever. I call and call and he never replies. He also promised dates to come to my home and then never showed up. When he finally showed up to do the work it was mediocre at best. His workers do not take pride in their work. I wasted so much money with this landscaper. I have no idea how he stays in business with his unbelievably bad customer service. There are far better landscapers out there who offer excellent customer service and quality work. I hired a new company to fix Josh's mess. Stay away from Thayer! read more

Lots of landscapers call themselves as nurseries. Lots of nurseries aren't really much more than roadside stands that sells flowers. Thayer Nursery and Landscaping is the real deal. They have a ton of experience and have forgotten more than I will ever know about landscaping, trees and flowers. But what I do know is this: when a business tells me they'll stand behind what they sell and then they do, well then I know this is the kind of place I want to do business. Truthful, honest, authentic and knowledgeable. That's who they are; that's what they do and I couldn't be happier. read more

I had these people do a $10,000 job for my house in the backyard I did with Josh one of the owners . half of the plan stay put and died and a waterfall they put in the backyard does not work anymoreand they left the side of my yard a messthey were supposed to take big boulders with them and they never dId I also reported them to the Better Business Bureauand. please don't do business with these people you will not be happy !! read more

I stopped by with a landscape plan and said that I needed help with my front and back yard. They said they would get back to me within a few days with a cost estimate, but I never heard back. I tried calling them on three separate occasions and left messages on a machine and with someone but no one ever called me back. Very poor customer service and they lost a potential customer. read more

We bought a cord of wood from Thayer last autumn and, although expensive, it was worth every penny. The cord was a generous one, for starters, and the wood was great - dry, aromatic and burned really well. I will definitely call them again when I need to restock. read more

I ordered a lot of fire wood delivered to my house from Thayer, and they showed up on time with wood that burns great in my fireplace.
