These guys are the best mechanics we have / had :( in the area. As honest as you can ask for. A couple of really good guys that learned the business from their old man. Thamms added a great small town feel to the neighborhood with their classic older building and old school photos of times past. Seems like they left just in time missing the mess of the pandemic. Joe and Dave are the definition of awesome. The only reason why I hate having a new car under warranty is because I can't bring it to them. Today was an exception, flat tire on my wife's car. I threw the "donut" on and called the dealer to drop the tire off to have it plugged. Guess what, they want $110 to diagnose the problem, which can be applied to the cost of the repair. I have the problem figured out. There's a damn nail in the tread of the tire! No warranty on tires. Oh well. Call Dave, he says drop it off, he'll patch it and he'll put it back on the car when I pick my son up from preschool across the street. And that's what he did. For $28. Why so much? Because he found a second nail. I can't say it enough. They are the best. Thanks again guys. Only 6k miles until you can have the car back! read more

Joe and Dave Thamm have been running Thamm's Auto Repair in the Beverly neighborhood since they took over for their father, Joe Sr. I can only tell you that this business has been around since at least the 1960s; my uncles worked there, sweeping out the shop and pumping gas. Joe and Dave don't sell gas anymore, but what they do sell is excellent, honest auto repair. I can tell you that these are probably two of the only honest mechanics in Chicago. They've never once sold me something I didn't need or didn't want. You won't find any heavy sales pressure here; what you'll find are two honest, hard-working gentlemen who know just about everything there is to know about cars. I can say all of this with confidence because I work on cars myself; when there's something I can't do on my own, I take it to Joe and Dave. They will sit patiently with you and explain exactly what you need and why you need it, and their prices are eminently fair. Another thing about Thamm's that I love is the fact that it's just Joe and Dave; they don't have any employees other than themselves, and their extremely sweet brindle bulldog, Tora, who spends her days lounging on a blanket in one corner of the shop. Dave and Joe answer the phones, do all of the work on the cars, all of the billing and invoicing, everything from start to finish; it's impossible to have a misunderstanding or to have one person tell you one thing and another tell you another. Even more, they seem to have an agreement with each other that once one of them works on a car, that one will always work on that same car, each and every time it comes into the shop. That way, they know in their heads what work has been done and how they did it. I'm on my fourth car since I turned sixteen and I will trust almost no one else to work on my vehicles. Joe and Dave specialize in domestic cars, and they focus on typical issues such as brakes, basic maintenance, and motor overhaul. They don't really work on transmissions; they will, however, refer you to their preferred transmission shop in the area, so you can get your work done right, by someone who specializes in that work. If you come in with an exhaust problem, they have no problem referring you to a Midas or a Merlin, someone who can do the work cheaper and faster than they can. In short, these guys won't screw you; in fact, I've often dropped a car off with them and said "Find out what's wrong with it and fix it!" having complete confidence that they will only do what's necessary. Furthermore, they stand behind their work. They once replaced an alternator, and the new unit wound up conking out only a month later. They replaced it free of charge. It being a family-run, small business, Joe and Dave are only there Monday through Friday, from about eight to four. Expect them to take a vacation every summer and to occasionally close during the holidays; I think that's great, that they're just normal folks providing a good honest service. Thamms does good work and they are centrally located in the Beverly neighborhood. I brought my wife's car here to have the air conditioner fixed. They diagnosed the problem and informed me of a faulty compressor. They allowed me to order my own parts, removed the bad unit and installed the new one. The air is now freezing cold and my wife is very happy. Their labor rate is somewhere around $75-80 per hour and that's not bad at all. I'd rather pay up and have the work done right, than pay twice because the work was shoddy. Originally, my buddy, who is also a mechanic, installed the faulty unit, a remanufactured compressor by AC Delco. If he had the proper equipment, he would have known the unit was defective immediately. He didn't, and I wasn't about to make the same mistake twice. read more

LOOKING FOR A REALLY HONEST INTEGRITY BASED AUTO REPAIR GO TO THAMMS! Recently went to Thamm's to have my car checked over before a road trip. Older car that has been having some problem with the air conditioning working intermittently which I had just spent $300 at Firestone to have checked and they claimed repaired. Now here is the important part of this review. Instead of charging me again and trying a costly part that may or may not fix the problem Joe told me to take the car to Subaru and have them test the $1000 part and NO CHARGE for all of his time trying the less costly fixes! read more

Ok so I understand why and how they've received five stars !!!! Honest, informative, and a sense of nostalgia to how neighborhood businesses were. Glad I found them and will remain a loyal customer. One thing that was incorrect was the " reasonable " price. Truth is they are beyond reasonable in comparison to the Midas, Pep Boys, and other large establishments. This place was awesome! After I got the runaround from another shop, I found this place on yelp. They were so helpful and the price (even though I wanted to pay less but who wants to pay for auto repairs) was very fair! My car is working just fine and this place has gotten themselves a new customer. Also right next to the Metra so easy to drop off and get to work with no problem. I have been going to Thamms' Auto since I moved into the Beverly Area(about 35 years. I have never been disappointed. They do exactly what they tell you they are doing and will call if they find something else to get your okay. If they think you can get something done cheaper with the dealer, they tell you. Two great brothers that are honest and go out of their way to help. I would recommend them to everyone. read more

GREAT PLACE! GREAT SERVICE! I brought my car in to have the engine looked at before finding out from the dealership that there was a reprogramming recall and it needed to be brought there. Although they had already spent a good amount of time working on it, they only charged me a very reasonable labor fee. I will be returning to Thamms' for any future auto repair needs! read more
