It's now called Grandma's Thai Cuisine. *** This review has been long overdue, and I'm finally glad to share my thoughts about this amazing Thailand restaurant! I've been a regular and loyal customer since they were at the old location (in Harker Heights off of Indian Trail). Eating there was my first experience with Thailand food and I was hooked. It's also an added bonus that they instantly greet and remember you right when you walk in the door. So, you can just imagine my disappointment when the owner, Rangson, told me that they were going to sell their restaurant to another buyer. Rangson later had the cook (relative) come out to speak with me. She gave me her number so I can order home-cooked meals from her and all I had to do was call. Such a sweet compromise! Unfortunately, I lost her number.. I should've guarded it as if it were the Holy Grail. (Well, in my opinion it really was.) When the new owners took over Orchid Thai, we decided to give it a try. My companion and I both agreed it was no comparison. Not even close. Oh well... Fast forward to 2010. Had a craving for Thailand again and wanted to try someplace different. Yelped it, and OMG... I want to give a major shoutout to fellow Yelpers, V R. and Bill K., for stating on their review that the previous owners of Orchid Thai are back! That was all I need to know... New location at 440 Plaza. I've missed this family-owned restaurant and their food immensely! My favorites are the pepper steak and garlic fried fish. But, really, everything is all good! Try it! Hands down the best Thai Cuisine I've had, that says a lot considering I've had it in many different places!! If you want great, authentic Thai food and are well versed with Thai/Asian food GO!, you will not be disappointed. If you want to experiment and broaden your horizons and you're not sure what to get, GO! Very friendly family owned business with Aunties from Thailand cooking up family favorites staying true to authentic Thai Cuisine! Rangson will remember you by name, help and take the time to explain the dishes, make recommendations and he'll even remember your favorite dishes by menu number even when you forget what they are or what you had last. I've eaten Thai food everywhere from the East Coast, Southwest and Hawaii and this is the best with great service. You'll even make a friend there! Before this month I would have given this restaurant 5 stars...I have been a loyal customer for as long as they've been at the Fort Hood St location (and even when they had their old restaurant in Harker Heights). But, and here is the kicker, I went there for lunch yesterday and learned that they SOLD THE RESTAURANT...AGAIN!!! My husband and I both noticed that all the staff was new and the food tasted different. I even asked my waitress if the restaurant had been sold and she told me no (why didn't she just tell me the truth? No idea.). I asked where one lady was and was told that she was in the kitchen cooking. Hmmmm... I finally got the truth when I asked the man at the cash register. At least he was honest. The food wasn't bad...just different. I will go back and give it another try and if the quality remains I'm sure I'll still eat there, just not as often as before. This is one of those hole-in-the-wall places where the food is delicious and cheap... The lunch buffet is an incredible value. You can help yourself to as many plates as your heart desires for around 8 bucks. Despite the buffet setup, the food is consistently excellent, and more importantly, fresh. This is my favorite kind of restaurant. Clearly a family place, a dozen or so tables and wall hangings that really look like they're from Thailand. We went towards the end of their open hours, and still got great food. Whenever I try a new Thai place, I always order pad thai for comparison. This pad thai was the closest to when I had it on Guam: very yummy and the flavors just right. We also had chicken satay, vegetables tempura, more like a vegetable fritter, and a curry was ordered by my daughter. All were delicious. Will plan on going again before I leave town. read more

Lunch buffet is incredible. Different items on the bar each day. There's enough different items on the bar for just about any palate.

GREAT food! When we first moved to killeen in August, I did a quick search for thai and Thai Orchid came up. Everyone said it was better with the previous owners but still decent. So we ate there a few times. Then, one day, I stumbled across V.R.'s post about how "they're back" and decided we just HAD to try this Thai that was better than the new owners. So off we went to Tham Rab (Thai Orchid was closed for New Years and we were hankering for some pad thai). We haven't been back to Orchid since! It was really good thai... Tham Rab is GREAT! can't speak much for the service. We always get it to go. But the first night we went, we were about 30 mins before close and I guess it was slow so they were calling it a night. As soon as we got out of the car, they opened the doors back up and let us in... which was a lifesaver cause we really couldn't think of a thing we wanted that night except Pad Thai and our old spot was closed. The food is so flavorful and perfectly balanced. Fair warning, though....if you like spicy (i don't, hubby does) take her advice when she says try the "mild" first. He usually gets medium to spicy when we go places. But when we ordered she said "you try my little spice first and if you want more you go up next time." On the drive home with the food in my lap my sinuses were clearing from the spice in this dish. It wasn't burning or anything. Just tingling and making it easier to breathe. lol. So we get home and hubby takes one bite and goes "wow! I'm sure glad I didn't get it any spicier!" Love this spot. We haven't been back to the other place since. I feel kinda bad. Ok to start I see a ton of great reviews so let me give my scoop on the situation. Firstly we walked in and it was very quiet (which is nice) There was maybe 2-3 other groups in there eating. The host was very nice and took our drink order right away and supplied us with menu's. The menu was very easy to navigate and wasn't overly confusing. I ordered the Tom Yum Shrimp (10.95) and my friends ordered Yellow Curry (with chicken) and Massaman Curry (with chicken) When their orders came out I was extremely impressed with the size and they both let me sample the dishes and they tasted fantastic, very flavorful and rich/creamy. Now the reason I didn't give 5 stars is when my dish came it looks a little empty. The amount of shrimp was worth the 11 dollars but it lacked everything else, this doesnt account for the taste it was very good and spicy as I requested, it was a bit more limey then I normally like but it really lacked vegetables. It had maybe 4-5 mushrooms a bunch of onion slices and maybe a single small tomatoes worth of vegetables in it. All dishes came with a nice big scoop of rice. My friends couldn't even come close to finishing their dish while I found myself almost drinking all the broth just to get full. If I was to reprice this dish I'd put it at a 8-9 dollar value instead of 11 just my opinion. Otherwise this has been some of the best Thai food I've had in the area. read more

I've only tried their Pad Thai but it's as good as favorite places in California where there is plenty of competing Asian food businesses. The noodles had a good texture and the seasoning was delicious. The shrimp was very plump and juicy and this place was generous with the portion (both and noodles and meat). I will definitely come back here whenever I have a Thai food craving. read more

This place is the worst! I will never go again! My boyfriend told the server he did not like spicy food & wanted his food as mild as possible, it was SPICY, EVEN FOR ME! They refused to redo the dish & also refused to take it off the ticket. We had crab rangoons that were nasty & when we asked for more sauce the guy refused to give more sauce but said to use our egg roll sauce smh This place is ridiculous! For a Thai place in a small town, they have very good service and good quality food. Its such a great hole-in-the-wall find! We ordered the crab Rangoon which had a curry base. It was such a good touch! Very good. We also got the chicken pad Thai and chicken fried rice. The pad Thai was a little too oily for my taste but was still good. And the chicken fried rice was amaze balls! They had large chunks of chicken sprinkled throughout and the rice was the perfect balance of soft and hard. It was so good that we ordered a second one! Their Yum Salad is soooo divine. I have cravings all the time for it! Service is quick and friendly! The food never seems to take more than 10 minutes depending on the amount of food ordered which is fantastic! They refill your drinks promptly and check up on you every once in awhile to make sure everything is to your satisfaction. Always amazing every time. My boyfriend and I have been coming here for a few years and it never disappoints. We have tried many of the Thai places in the central area and this hands down is still the best and we always come back to it. We have never had a dish here where we did not like. I dunno why I never stopped by this place..the food is amazing! I had the Pineapple Curry (chicken) and Chicken Satay and boy was it good! I did not get the Thai Hot for the curry but instead no spice..but it was still "warm" to my standards but it was delicious! I'll have to try it at Thai Hot hehe. Visited this restaurant after viewing recommendations on Yelp. I ordered the chicken Pad Thai, to-go. The dish was delicious. The flavors came together very well and the meal portion was hearty!
