Very cool Thai restaurant. The food tasted fresh. Rice is not included for dinner so keep that in mind for price. I think it is for lunch. I had yellow noodles and it was good. The staff is Thai and when I went by the kitchen i could smell freshly chopped vegetables. I looked and saw many containers ready to go. We also had Pad nam mun hoi which was so so and duck spring rolls and dim sum which were both good. Overall worth a try, Especially the yellow noodle curry. read more

Me and my mum were a bit skeptical on coming to this place as it looked rather American, but we gave it a go anyways! The food was exceptional, I'm very picky on my curries and the curry noodles were insane. My mom got a vegan pad thai and loved it! Big portions, had to take some home. Ordered home delivery (via amazon) So so glad to have found great quality Thai delivered home. Between ho-ja for light meals and Thai rice for spicy Asian, my bases are now completely covered. The dumplings and fish cakes were good. But the soups and main courses were outstanding! I mentioned my prawn allergy when ordering online and was called by the restaurant to be informed that tom yum soup and the Thai curries had shrimp paste in the base. Since I'd ordered just one of each of these and had some other stuff too, I chose to continue with the order as there were other people at home who could have the shrimp stuff. But, I'm glad they told me, so I could avoid those dishes. The crispy soft shell crab pad Thai was amazing! I guess this was also partly because chicken pad Thai never tastes as good as regular pad Thai (with shrimp) - developed the allergy 15 years ago, so I still remember how I would like certain dishes to taste. Tom kha gai - chicken coconut milk soup was mind blowing. I'd asked for extra spicy and the parallel sweet and spicy flavours were a riot. Their egg fried rice and red curry got thumbs up from the others. Hideously decorated, probably like in Thailand but it looked like TGI Fridays in a bad light. It was quiet for a Sunday when Pizza East was packed which was telling. To start we had tom kha soup that had quickly boiled button mushrooms which were just about cooked in a coconut soup base. Soft shell crab tempura which didn't taste super fresh. Dimsum was OK. Main course was lamb massaman curry. Pre-grilled lamb on the bone in varying cuts in a curry paste thin sauce and vegetables which clearly had nothing to do with the curry. Pad Thai was too sweet and syrupy, should have listened to other's reviews-silly me. They were out of various drinks, didn't have condensed milk for their iced tea and couldn't do 2 fresh lime juices because they had no more sugar syrup despite £4.50 not being enough to stir sugar into boiling water, there was definitely enough to put into the food. I would be rather upset if this was my local Thai. Wouldn't return, couldn't recommend. read more

I love this place, never really busy, but food is AMAZING and so affordable! I normally order take away (weekly!), but have eaten there twice and service is really good and fast. Nice environment. Take away, always quick and hot, super important for me! My favourite dishes are the Thai green curry with chicken, choo chee curry which is not so hot with prawns, both of those are epic with coconut rice, and I always always get the kao pang with chicken. I was a bit hesitant because I always go to Market Thai and have never been disappointed. However I was pleasantly surprised by Thai Rice- the decor and ambiance does not compare to Market Thai but the food was lovely. Something awful is happening to the noodles and curries at Thai Rice. Recently I suspected a change in management--I call hostile takeover. Maybe it's less sinister than that, but who can really say when it comes to these things. Either way, something's amiss. When I call, I don't get my usual brilliantly-bad-at-English order taker. He's seemingly been replaced by someone much better at English. Why? Also, there's a new-fangled order system that allows them to track all your info via your phone number. Hmmm... fishy... Also, the delivery guy is different. Still efficient, though, so I'll let that one go. But the pad kee mao from last week was oddly malodorous. It was a bit--to use one of my favorite American idioms--funky. So much so, that I couldn't finish it. This week it was my beloved green curry. It had almost no flavor at all. We had the Thai Green Curry that brought just the right amount of heat with the spice and the yellow curry rice noodles were flavourful to the last drop of gravvy. I've been to Thailand and love its sweet, spicy dishes. Thai Rice definitely nailed it - taste wise. But their signature thai hospitality and wide smiles have been lost en route to London though! With all the Thai options nearby, this isn't the one I would choose. Some dishes are far too spicy, beyond what most people could stand, and the decor is blah. It's nice that you can sit outside on a good day, but all in all, I would much rather dine at Market Thai or Walmer Castle. Thai food is cheap in general, and though the menu is huge and the prices are decent, I'd spend my dough elsewhere. read more

Awful awful service, food defiantly not worth it. JUST DON'T GO THERE. We were a group of 4 and ordered 4 dishes. One of us didn't like the dish at all and kindly ask if he could replace it. The response we got from the manager was definitive, rude and insulating. "The food is perfectly good, why should I get you another dish?!" Apparently he forgot that the service is part of the experience of dining. At the end they didn't charge us about the dish (so why not replace it? Why be rude and condescending?) my guess is it's because I commented I'd be sure mark the "great" service and attitude in my online reviews. Thai Rice seems like a bit of a trek away from Notting Hill Gate, but if you go at night once the stalls are packed away then it's a quick, easy stroll up to the other end and easy to spot, just after you pass under the overhead road. The food is good, if not spectacular. I went for the duck curry, having been told that mine was "less than medium" in terms of spiceyness but unlike the reviewer below, I found it to be disappointingly mild. I hate it when dishes blow your head off and destroy any vestiges of taste, but I do enjoy at least a little zing and sadly this was somewhat lacking. On the plus side, it was admirably packed full of duck and chunky peppers; you can't fault them on their generosity. The menu was extensive (some might say too extensive . . . ) and the service was excellent. Our waiters were cheerful and attentive and the food arrived very quickly. Prices aren't too bad; probably akin to Busaba Eathai which has admittedly a lot more atmosphere, but then also makes it virtually impossible to have a conversation whilst Thai Rice is a great place to eat good food and have a nice natter. In fact, that could be its downfall. The restaurant is supposed to close at 11pm but come 11:30, my friend and I were still chattering away, oblivious to the time. We were slowly working our way through a bottle of wine and could quite easily have necked it back had we been so requested, but no such tentative approach was ever made. I was quite touched that we weren't even presented with the bill until we asked for it, despite having long outstayed our welcome. I did feel pretty selfish as we passed through the restaurant on our way out and realised that the poor staff members had been packing up around us, but their unwillingness to spoil our evening was very much appreciated. That in itself has ensured that I'll return; athough next time I'll start eating two hours earlier, just to avoid the guilt factor! read more

We stopped here in a desperate bid to get some food that wasn't falafel after walking up and down the Portobello Road for a while. It was nice to find somewhere to sit and they were happy with us sitting out the front with the dog (some places can be a bit funny about it) The service was super friendly and the Singha nice and cold. I ordered the king prawn pad thai and I was slightly disappointed as it had a distinct sweet chilli kind of flavouring to it. It wasn't bad, by any means, but, being the massive pedant that I am at times, it wasn't 'quite right.' Still, it was very, very tasty and came out quickly and fresh. The Thai crackers were amazing and we also ordered some Gyoza to start and they were very tasty. Pretty standard pricing and efficient lovely staff; probably won't go back again, but that is more circumstance rather than design, because Portobello Road Market can be a hateful place to be when there are so many people there. The only bad thing I would say about the place, which in fact has nothing to do with Thai Rice itself, was the fact that a few doors down the Mexican place had hired a brass band(?) to play REALLY LOUDLY outside the front of their restaurant and it was horrific. They weren't even Mexican. I'd have hate to have chosen there to eat, a few doors down and it was suffocatingly loud; I can't imagine what it would have been like right next to them. read more

This is my favourite budget Thai restaurant in London - they don't lessen the the heat or taste down for Western palates like most Thai restaurants in the UK seem too. Prices are cheap and they also do delivery if you can't make the trek to the Ladbroke Grove end of town. read more

I had been exploring the neighborhood and starving decided to duck in here on the past recommendations of my host. He told me that it was a great Thai place that was super cheap, well he didn't have to tell me twice! Service was good. My waitress was super nice and food came out without too long a wait. I got a grilled chicken dish with coconut rice which was all to die for! I really didn't want to stop eating, the soy-ginger sauce they marinated the chicken in was so yummy! The coconut rice was not great, (I've had better) but it wasn't too bad. They also had a spicy sauce that good. All three items just blended so well together that my taste buds were so happy!
