Great service and friendly staff. Good food but has gone downhill in last 6months. Gong Thalai is still amazing though.

Tamarind Cafe has delicious and reasonably priced food, with super friendly staff... Tamarind Cafe?…read moreYes! Bear with me, this is definitely a review for Lemongrass, but I'm just setting the scene for you first... So, as I was saying, great food and service at Tamarind, but that makes for a very popular eatery, and if you're thinking of heading here without a reservation - forget it! So with that in mind, let's move on to Lemongrass, the beautiful but unloved sister of Tamarind. The Cinderella of Rickmansworth's Thais, if you will. We happened upon Lemongrass one disorganised Saturday. We'd called Tamarind to make a reservation, but too late. It was for this reason that we rather reluctantly went for what we imagined to be an inferior substitute - Lemongrass. When we arrived, my mother looked through the window and very nearly turned back. She thought it looked less cosy and friendly then Tamarind. But in we went, and do you know what...? Just as good, and in some ways even better! Food was just as cheap, just as delicious. Staff just as friendly, with great service. And on top of that, the decor is much nicer. That's actually what led the mama to think it wasn't as nice when she peeked through the glass. What I mean is that Tamarind is a fairly shabby little cafe, which somehow makes it seem more friendly. From outside, Lemongrass looked too nice to be cosy, but once we were in there, we realised the place was buzzing and the staff lovely. And you'll find yourself a table much more easily. Not sure why - as far as I can see, there's absolutely no reason why this place shouldn't be all booked up. It's a great little place! Just don't tell all the Tamarindites, in case they steal our table. I love you, Cinderella, and you look just beautiful in that glass slipper. xxx

Preface to this: I have little authority on Thai cuisine. Despite my frequent trips to SE Asia,…read moreI've managed to avoid going to Thailand to this point and so I can't vouch for authenticity etc. I enjoy Thai food, but I never fell in love with it as many people have and tend to go to Thai places a few times a year. Anyway, with that out of the way... I was surprised when Tom Yum opened, given the competition across the road (a place which I tried and didn't think much of when it opened). However, it seems to be pretty busy most lunchtimes and evenings, so it's doing pretty well for itself. The menu here is pretty standard, there's nothing particularly out of the ordinary here (that's not necessarily a bad thing), but they do some interesting specials such as giant sizzling prawns. We ordered salt and pepper squid, soft shell crab, dumplings, and tom kha soup for starter. The starters were fine, nothing special but I was happy enough. Then the soup. Hmm. The soups come served in thick, ceramic bowls over a candle (the top of the bowl seems to be cold, mind). It's nicely presented, I'll give them that. I just didn't like my soup very much: it was too thick and I didn't like the balance of flavour - the sweet and sour elements were present (a bit sweet for me), but I didn't really taste much else. All in all, it was a little bit sickly for me. For the mains, I had a Massaman curry and some green veg with sticky rice. The curry had a lot of the same problems as the soup, it was just too thick and whilst the flavour was strong, I found it distinctly unbalanced and lacking in depth. I mean, it's fine, it just became a bit of a chore to finish, unfortunately. All in all, it's a shame as I wanted to like the place. The staff are nice and all, but I just didn't like the food very much. I guess I never expected much going in, but it just wasn't particularly enjoyable (and I don't mind eating food that's just fine whatsoever). Maybe it was just a bad day, but I can't imagine myself going back in a hurry.

I loved the Thai Curry noodle dish. I think it is called Kham sol. I gave it an 8/10 as it tasted like something I would have in Bangkok or Malaysia. It was well made. My friend ordered the Korean Don Buri special. It could not finish it as we had loaded up with apptizers. He gave it a 7/10. Another had the Green curry and loved the taste. It had an jndian slang to how It tasted. He gave it a 7/10. Oberall we enjoyed it here and were wwll served beyond closing time. Price is in the $$ range and worth it. Will be back if I ever come by.
