Preface to this: I have little authority on Thai cuisine. Despite my frequent trips to SE Asia,…read moreI've managed to avoid going to Thailand to this point and so I can't vouch for authenticity etc. I enjoy Thai food, but I never fell in love with it as many people have and tend to go to Thai places a few times a year. Anyway, with that out of the way... I was surprised when Tom Yum opened, given the competition across the road (a place which I tried and didn't think much of when it opened). However, it seems to be pretty busy most lunchtimes and evenings, so it's doing pretty well for itself. The menu here is pretty standard, there's nothing particularly out of the ordinary here (that's not necessarily a bad thing), but they do some interesting specials such as giant sizzling prawns. We ordered salt and pepper squid, soft shell crab, dumplings, and tom kha soup for starter. The starters were fine, nothing special but I was happy enough. Then the soup. Hmm. The soups come served in thick, ceramic bowls over a candle (the top of the bowl seems to be cold, mind). It's nicely presented, I'll give them that. I just didn't like my soup very much: it was too thick and I didn't like the balance of flavour - the sweet and sour elements were present (a bit sweet for me), but I didn't really taste much else. All in all, it was a little bit sickly for me. For the mains, I had a Massaman curry and some green veg with sticky rice. The curry had a lot of the same problems as the soup, it was just too thick and whilst the flavour was strong, I found it distinctly unbalanced and lacking in depth. I mean, it's fine, it just became a bit of a chore to finish, unfortunately. All in all, it's a shame as I wanted to like the place. The staff are nice and all, but I just didn't like the food very much. I guess I never expected much going in, but it just wasn't particularly enjoyable (and I don't mind eating food that's just fine whatsoever). Maybe it was just a bad day, but I can't imagine myself going back in a hurry.

Service is great. Nice furnishings. Please do ask them to add spice if you love a more exciting version of certain dishes that would've been made milder for local palates.

I avoid chain restaurants when I can and this one had a good rating on yelp. It was a fixed lunch offer only (no a la carte) with one soup or starter and one main course served with rice. I ordered the sticky pork ribs as a starter - they were very well cooked and were almost falling off the bone, but the sauce on them was sickly sweet. My main course was a beef stir fry (I asked for a spicy option and the server recommended this) Again the meat was well cooked, but it was so salty! While main courses are normally served with rice, I requested if I could substitute the rice for noodles. The egg noodles that were served with the beef was very tasty (and they weren't even on the menu) The place was quite full in the noon and most people in there were locals. The staff was really sweet and obliging. However the food was a disappointment. I just ate the noodles and picked at the beef and pork. Even mixed with the noodles the sweetness was cloying and the saltiness overwhelming. Next time I think I'll just eat at Ashridge before leaving, the buffets there were amazing.

We decided on apps for our table of 4: Golden Money Bags (get your mind out of the gutter!) and the One Bite Salmon. GMB were pastry packets filled with Thai spiced chicken served with a sauce. Really delicious with a delicate crunch. Teh OBS was my favorite. The salmon was topped with lime, ginger, lemongrass, toasted coconut & nestled in a betel leaf. Just pop the whole thing in your mouth! Man, the flavors go together well with the slightly crispy salmon. For dinner I ordered the Thai Red Curry (I'm a sucker for red curry) with prawns. Hands down the best red curry I've had! Definitely on the spicy side & packed with with a combination of flavors went well with the prawns. H had the Giggline Pad Thai which he said was good but not the best. Oh well, at least there was one extremely happy person at the table. Not sure what everyone else ordered but it did look delicious! Staff, while not fluent in English, were nice & they all worked together to ensure that you have a good experience. When in Beaconsfield, check this place out!

Staff never forgot about my table and always made sure we were happy with our food. Food was slightly pricey, but for what you paid you did get exceptional food and good quality food too. However, you had to add rice separately onto your dish rather than it automatically coming with your food, i felt this was a shame because the main meals were already very expensive. Overall, great atmosphere, great service and tasty food! I will be returning.
