We found ourselves visiting a family friend in Banbury for the evening, and holy guacamole, am I happy that we chose this place for dinner. The Tom Kha Gai soup was killer. They served the massaman curry on top of a candle lit bowl to keep it warm - super cool. Some of the best massaman I've ever had and that's saying a lot as a Houstonian. We came to Thai Orchid based on recommendations from some colleagues who said this was the best Thai around. Given that they were pretty good with other dining suggestions we thought we would be good here. We dined here on a Thursday night without reservations and it appeared they were not too full when we arrived. The restaurant may be larger than what I initially saw, but we were directed to a seating area that was small and dark. In a stark contrast the other area seemed like a bright conservatory, nothing in between. Decor was nice and clean so that was a plus. Service was a little disjointed as we had 3 different people taking care of us and asking us if we wanted something to drink. Odd, but at least we weren't ignored. The reason for this review though comes down to the food. We started with some prawn crackers since they asked us if we wanted them. Then we ordered crispy duck starters. It came with some duck sauce and scallions and pancakes. The duck while ok wasn't really what I would call crispy. Given how small the portion was, wasn't sure I would consider ordering it again. We then ordered stir fried prawns and a stir fried beef dish. The sauce seemed very similar to one another. We liked that they were spicy but thats about the highlight really. We ordered rice with this entree thinking it came with, but turned out it was extra. All in all, we spent nearly £65 for this meal which is pricey given the portion sizes. The building itself is pretty nice. They do go all out with decor, which matches the price point they're going for. The interior space is a bit tight. STAFF// Attentive, but the service delivery from some was kind of off-putting. The older woman always had an apathetic face or looked at you like she was annoyed at you when asking for anything. Overall, friendly enough, but nothing stellar. FOOD// I was pretty disappointed. I ordered Pad Thai, which is the one thing that I thought was safe. But while everyone else was satisfied with their curries, I struggled to get through even half of my noodles. It was overly sweet, unlike any Pad Thai I've had before. For +£10 per dish, portions are rather small (definitely enough for one, though) and nothing special except maybe presentation. This is one of, if not the favourite restaurants of mine. The interior is just stunning, the smell of the food cooking when you walk in just takes me back to my holiday in Thailand. The service is great and the food is just out of this world. I used to live in Southam so it was only ever a 20 min taxi drive away. Despite having made no booking, we only had to wait for a few minutes to get a table fairly late on on a Saturday night. This is a very nicely decorated restaurant with little expense spared on the fixtures and fittings. We had the seafood set menu which was very tasty, but I thought that it was over-priced for what it was. The presentation was good but not the very best and the service was quick and extremely polite. Not the best Thai food that I've had but also not the worst. This is a busy restaurant. It is also HUGE, much bigger than its compact double front suggests. It extends quite far back, and if you are sitting in the wrong place, it is the opposite of relaxed as staff whizz past you with plates and dishes, both full and empty. Many of the tables are very cramped, I would say uncomfortably close to your neighbours, so it can be a bit of a chair-banging session if you're backing on to the wrong people. The food is good, but it is expensive. If you are used to decent Thai food at reasonable prices, as I was when I moved here from London, this will wake you up. We last ate at the Orchid towards the end of the summer holidays. The bill came to just under £40 a head for my wife and I, and we weren't pushing the boat out (no wine and 'regular' mains). When you think where you can end up sitting, the lack of personal space and how slack the service can be if it's busy, for me it's a bit too much to ask. I went to Thai Orchid for a lunch buffet and was disappointed by the lack of choice and quality of the food for the price they were charging. The food was left on the side (like many buffet restaurants) and there seem to be more choice of desserts than main dishes. The service I received was excellent, the staff were very friendly and attentative. Another positive point would be the decoration, the work gone into it is simply amazing. I love going to the Thai Restaurant! I've been several times, so many I've lost count! I have taken work colleagues there and enjoyed the buffet. I have been with family and friends and dined there for lunch, dinner and special occasions. It's always busy and a good idea to get there close to 12 midday. The restaurant closes at 2pm and it literally closes at 2pm. The food is absolutely delicious and I cannot fault it. The service is impeccable! Staff are very friendly and always look after their customers. The interior is beautiful and I didn't realise just how large the restaurant was until we were taken all the way out the back to a wonderful, large table for 6. Absolutely Five Stars! The 'Thai Orchid' is a Thai restaurant located in the very centre of Banbury, Oxfordshire. Positioned next to the famous 'Banbury cross' (from the nursery rhyme), the 'Thai Orchid' is honestly the best restaurant in Banbury bar none. As a family we have visited on numerous occasion in the past and have never failed to be impressed by the stunning interior of the restaurant; manners and good nature of the staff that work there and quality and value of the food they serve. Honestly this place cannot be beaten, everytime we have a lovely time in this amazing building. The Food served is of really great quality and beautifully presented, most recommended on a visit would be the duck, wonderfully tender and very tasty. Also the 'crunchie pudding' is AMAZING!, basically crumbled up crunchie bars on a creamy chocolate moose type base. Really delicious. There is a wide selection of drinks available, from standard beers and colas to fine wines, we are never disappointed. The price is good for a decent restaurant, dont go expecting pub prices, as this is a formal dinner style restuarant. Very easy to get to, with limited parking right outside.
