I thought it was going to be hard to find a nice Thai restaurant in the northern suburbs- and I'm…read moreglad I looked a bit harder to find Chaa-Ba Thai Cafe! The restaurant is BYO. They have wine glasses and canisters to hold the bottle of wine. I had the money purse as an appetizer, and prawn coconut curry as my main dish. The money purse order comes with 4 and a side of sweet chili sauce! The little fried delicacies were very tasty! The coconut curry was awesome- I got to choose my level of 'hotness'. I ordered the dish medium heat, and also a side of jasmine rice (this is a la carte, and will set you back $3 for a small size; -1 star for having to pay extra for rice). The curry was really good and even had bits of coconut in it! I will definitely be back to try other dishes!

Not sure if I ever posted a review of my last Thai restaurant experience. It was out in the 'burbs…read moreof Melbourne and it did not go well. So my wife was keen to have a Thai meal for her birthday recently but there were a range of factors making it difficult for us to travel closer to town for one of the well knowns: soccer practice, me working late etc etc. But our neighbors had tried a Thai less than a mile (and walking distance) from home. What could go wrong? (Remembering my most recent experience gave me chills) Turns out, a young Thai couple have set up in the ruins of an old coffee shop nearby and the night was a great experience! Luckily we had phoned to see if they would be open after training as she said we needed to book. On arrival at 7:30, only one of the eight tables was set with cutlery... But over the next hour or so the tables filled and people arrived to collect their take away. One chef, great fresh, timely delivered food and a free dish for my wife's birthday! Not only that, the hostess then brought out a complimentary deep fried ice cream with sparkler to celebrate! If you've read my reviews, I'm pretty reluctant to give out five stars, but I'm making an exception this time for a new family run business, out in the Brisbane 'burbs who are doing it right.

They serve all the usual standard Thai dishes, but they also have an Isaan spin to their menu, which isn't that common in Brisbane. The Isaan or Northeastern region of Thailand, which shares its border with Laos and Cambodia, has a few signature dishes that don't usually appear in most Brisbane Thai restaurants. I love the dish Lard Na, which is stir fried flat rice noodles in a Thai style gravy. I know it doesn't sound all that appealing but it is a standard Isaan meal, it takes me right back with each mouthful. It is best eaten with extra chilli powder, sugar, fish sauce and lime/vinegar. Adjust to your tastes. The Yum Nua Nam Tog is a Laos style salad which is best eaten spicy, but you can request it mild or medium instead. The Pad C-Ew (with chicken) and Pad Chilli and Basil are also standout dishes. Thai Natong also has a really cheap lunch deal, with a number of Stir Fried or Curry dishes, or Noodle dishes for $8.90 (Chicken, Pork, Beef, Vegetarian) or $10.90 (Duck, Lamb, Prawn or Combination Seafood). Unfortunately they are only open for lunch on weekdays, not weekends.
